Ben is reading a passage about a famous writer, Hans Christian Andersen.

The Ugly Duckling is one of the world’s famous fairy 1


tales. The writer is H.C. Andersen. Do you know anything
about his life?

Andersen was born in 1805 in Denmark. His father died


in 1816 so Andersen and his mother became very poor. Then, 5
he was sent to a school where he could learn to make clothes and earn some
money. Three years later, he left the school and started to sing and act in a

theatre. Unfortunately, his voice changed, so he decided to work as a writer.

In 1835, he wrote his first book of famous stories like The Princess and the
Pea and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Besides children’s stories, Andersen wrote 10
poems and books about travel. However, his fairy tales were the most popular.

In 1875, Andersen passed away because he was very sick. To remember


him, people celebrate International Children’s Book Day every year on his
birthday.

A jewellery shop in Kowloon was robbed yesterday. The robbers escaped 1

At about 10 am, three robbers rushed into Marigold Jewellery Shop in


Mong Kok. They were all wearing masks and dressed in black. Two of them
pointed guns and ordered a salesman to open the glass cases. The salesman 5
refused, so a robber broke the glass with a hammer. The robbers moved like
lightning, took out the jewellery and put it all in a bag in about 10 seconds.

A saleswoman pressed a bell under the counter to alert the police. She
hoped they would come immediately. When the robbers tried to leave the shop,
the police arrived. The robbers fired at them while running out of the shop, but 10

The policemen chased and fired at the robbers. One of the robbers was shot 1
in the leg and the police caught him. The others got in the taxi and escaped. The
injured robber was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
