Topic: School Scavenger Hunt

Lesson Title: Code Breaking

Level: 11th-12th Lesson Duration: 2 days - 90 min (Block)

Lesson Objectives:
- Use school grounds to create opportunities for students to interact will different clubs, students and activities
- Develop critical thinking skills
- Find out how the historical events, written in the novel, impacted the world
- Learn how to de-code/code messages using computer software
- Learn how to use library resources in congruency with classroom subjects

Summary of Tasks / Actions:


- Students will answer the pre-assignment questions with their group members. (5 min)
- The Media specialist will explain the parameters of the assignment, explaining the rules and regulations (30 min)
- Every group will be given 10 minutes to decode the first message by working as a team, using the resources in the
library, if applicable.
- Students will then have two days to find, de-code and move to the next clue. All the while meeting different
students, participating in different activities and activating their critical thinking skills.
- With the final clues, students will race to see who can code the answer the fastest and display it on the SMART TV.
- Students will then answer post-assignment questions. (5 min)
- Discussion time afterwards will entail: what they thought of the book, what they think about coding, who did they
meet, what clubs interested them, and any other details they want to share as a group (30 min)
