In order for to achieving success in life, an individual must first set an important step
to achieve it which is setting a good goal for your personal life. A goal setting can be
any objective or purpose that you have set for yourself and push to achieve it. Keeping
your mindset positive and your drive fired-up is crucial to stay focus in achieving your
goal.

One of the methods is by using SMART goals which are Specific, Measurable,
Achievable, Relevant and Time-Based. In order to achieve the goal, there is a formula
called Zig Ziglar’s goal setting formula. The formula consists of seven steps towards
achieving the goals and is a bit similar to the SMART method but more specific. The
steps are identifying the specific goal, listing the benefits, obstacles, list the skills
required, create an action plan, the people that I can work with, and a deadline.

GOAL SETTING – In 9 years’ time, I would like to become a Manager of


Communications in Marketing Department as my career growth goal.

SMART METHOD

1. Specific – I would like to become a Manager of Communications in Marketing


Department by the age of 40.

I am currently 31 years old, working as an Executive 1 of Marketing Communications


at ParkCity Group, a property developer of well-known townships of Desa ParkCity in
Kuala Lumpur, ParkCity Hanoi in Vietnam and Marina ParkCity in Sarawak.Currently,
the communications team in my company is a small team of me and my superior to
execute all Corporate Communications works. To be specific, I will focus on my career
growth by completing my current study in UITM, going for extra communications
related trainings at work and aimed to become a Manager by the age of 40 which is in
year 2030.

2. Measurable – Completing my Bachelor Of Mass Communication (Hons) Public


Relations for the remaining 2 semesters

I am in the part 7 and 8 for current semester in order for me to complete my study at
UITM and achieve a Bachelor’s Degree. In another a year, I targeted to have my
Bachelor’s Degree and started to attending all career trainings at my company and
therefore applying for a Senior Executive and afterwards Manager position in my
department.

3. Achievable – I am going to complete my Bachelor’s Degree and gear-up my


experience in Public Relations and Corporate Communications.

Generally, in order for me to become a Manager in Corporate Communications, the


requirement needed in at least to have a 8 years of experience in Communication
related studies and work experience. Currently, I have a 5 years experience in
Communicationsn related working in MRCB and ParkCity Group. However, in order to
achieve my goal I have to have another two years of work experience and looking at
another 4-5 years more to build up relationship and reputations with my superior and
the whole organization.

4. Relevant – My current organization is growing and will sustained for at least 20


years in the property industry

My goal to become a Manager in my company is relevant because our current


company’s projects in the pipeline for another 20 years based on the current’s currents
assets and project developments. In order to achieve it I have another 9 years of
timeline to achieve my goal.

5. Time-Based – I have allocated 9 years of timeline to become a Manager at my


company

I have set to achieve my goal within 9 years of timeline to become a Manager by 2030
from year 2021. I personally think it is achievable within the time-based given the time
duration to complete and my study and building my work experience and skills in
around 5-6 years time.

ZIG-ZIGLERS FORMULA

1. Specific Goals

The specific goal I have set is to become a Manager of Communications in Marketing


Department as my career growth goal. I need to complete my study and build up my
experience and reputation within 9 years duration in order to achieve my goal by 2030.

2. Benefits

By achieving this goal setting I can get better career growth and have value to the
company. I can also improve to give back to the society economically and my family
earn for a better living.

3. Obstacle and its solutions

The onstacles that I faced currently is that my education’s background and the
requirements needed from the company does not meet. Therefore, I will need to
complete my study in order for me to apply and be eligible for that position. Another
obstacle is that my current team is small therefore I have some challenges in career
learning as my direct supervisor have to macro-manage all team therefore, I have
minimal direct supervision and guidance. Hence, I will learn on my own, and try to
enhance my working skills by attending work trainings.

4. Skills required

The skills required for my goal is education requirement and communications skills
and experiences. I have to focus and stay positive to ensure that my goal is
achievable.

5. Action Plan

First of all, I will need to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in a year time and passed
with flying colours. Afterwards, I will be attending all communications training focuses
on Sales and Marketing in property industry to ensure that the focus meets the
timeline.

6. People I can work with

Currently, my direct supervisor is positively on my side and support me in whatever


that I want to do. She is also the person that encourages me to attend all work trainings
and complete my Bachelor’s Degree to eventually help in building a concrete
Marketing Communications team in the company.

7. Deadline

I need to complete my Bachelor’s Degree by 2022 to achieve my goal by the age of


40.
