GRADE LEVEL: Grade 1 GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS: The learner listens for
comprehension, speaks clearly and uses appropriate expressions in talking about oneself, family,
and other social context interactions.
Learning competencies refer to the “knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes that students
need to demonstrate in every lesson and/or learning activity.”
are defined as what students require in the teaching-learning process in order to develop skills
that will prepare students for succeeding grade levels and, overall, for lifelong learning.
The value of MELCS in guaranteeing the delivery of quality education is that it considers both
the content and performance requirements needed for adequate instruction and learning while
taking into account the variable context of the learners, teachers, learning environment, and
support systems.
DepEd provided the MELCs as a primary reference for all Schools, Schools Division Offices
(SDOs), and Regional Offices (ROS) in determining and implementing learning delivery
approaches that are suited to the local context and diversity of learners while adapting to
COVID-19's challenges.
According to its guidelines, the MELCs is part of the department's response to develop resilient
education systems, especially during emergencies and will enable DepEd to focus instruction on
the “most essential and in dispensable” competencies.
Competencies help students draw and build upon what they know, how they think and what they
can do. In school, students develop and apply competencies through subject-area content and
learning experiences.
