Jamie Perkins

Mrs. Perkins is currently the Dyslexia

Interventionist for Port Neches Groves
Independent School District in Port Neches,
Texas. She has been teaching for 16 years, most
of which have been with PNGISD. Before
getting her job now, she taught English,
Reading Remediation, and Theatre Arts for
Port Neches Middle School.
Question 1: How can teachers/schools
follow FERPA while keeping a social media
presence?
Law: Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act
Mrs. Perkins's response: PNGISD asks for consent to post student's
pictures and work. If there are students whose family does not
consent to this, they can still be in a picture if they are not
identifiable. Teachers can post about the work, but the name and
grade cannot be visible.

My Thoughts: FERPA allows for parents and students to have

privacy throughout their life. One way for schools to showcase the
things they are doing while in class is to have social media
accounts that are heavily active. At PNGISD, they have always had a
large social media following, and this is a great way for the

02
community to feel involved around a school. I think that teachers
can follow the laws of FERPA while also showing student's work
and things going on in the classroom. A teacher could showcase
projects and just block out a name if the student has opted out of
being shown on social media.
Question 2: Since schools do not
need consent to provide directory
information, what are the benefits of this?
Law: Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act
Mrs. Perkins's response: Students could be provided goods or
services that parents might not be aware of. This could benefit the
child in an educational setting as well as a needs based setting.

My Thoughts: Schools are able to disclose small amounts of

information without consent, such as awards, compliance to the
needs of law enforcement, and if the student is in need of financial
aid. This can seriously benefit a student, for they do not need
consent to be able to get financial help. This information could also
go to a school official with educational interest in the student. This

03
could also heavily benefit the child if they need help with
something at school.
