ACTIVITY
Aviance
Aviance is a UK-based company and is part of the Go-Ahead group. It provides a comprehensive range of
airport services including baggage handling. The company has seen a potential improvement in the overall
working condition of the company and business profitability by including occupational health provision
and conducting sickness management among its employees. In connection to this, a pilot scheme was
tested at the airport to improve staff sickness absence due to occupational causes. The pilot testing ended
successfully, and so the company implemented this occupational health initiative across the United
Kingdom to provide: pre-employment and health screening; sickness management; and physiotherapy
services and rehabilitation programs.
Union representatives were involved in the introduction of the service and managers were trained to
deliver the services across all sites. Aviance can now offer immediate access to assessment and treatment
for injuries such as musculoskeletal, supported by trained physiotherapists.
The initiative creates a positive impact on the company since it reduces the overall rate of absenteeism
due to sickness and manual handling injuries. It also reduces the accident claims since early intervention
can already be applied to any form of physical injury which can be encountered by the personnel of the
company at site. More importantly, the staff of the company has increased awareness on the benefits of
positive management of health and safety issues.
