WEEK 1 FORUM DISCUSSION

2122 R01-2 GURO21 Course 2 Class 01

1. We have been discussing Thinking Skills during our past chat session. Therefore, what
specific Thinking Skills you need as a teacher in the 21st century? How will you develop and
nurture these in order that these will form part of your institutionalized system leading to
become significant elements of your personal and professional culture? How can these
thinking skills be integrated/demonstrated in the class adopting distance learning delivery
modalities?

*Developing higher order thinking skills can absolutely help me become a better 21st century
teacher. One of my critical roles is to help my students develop their thinking skills, so they can
deal with new and unique problems and situations with confidence. Developing our critical and
creative thinking will also help us as teachers because it will allow us to analyze problems and
find creative and effective ways to improve both the way we approach instruction and the way
we handle different situations in our lives. These can be integrated/ demonstrated through
crafting self-learning modules, activity sheets, video lessons, or conducting online classes that
allow my students to think deeper about the lesson through asking critical questions and giving
activities that promote critical and creative thinking.

2.  Please read Teaching Thinking Skills: Redesigning Classroom Practices By Abdullah

Mohd Noor (2005) found in your course materials and answer the following:

a. From this paper of Abdulah Mohd Noor, what are your gained significant learnings and
insights and why do you consider them important?

*I gained from the research of Abdulah Mohd Noor that in integrating thinking skills in
classroom teaching, there are changes and constraints that teachers must face. One of these is
that the classroom needs reorientation for the integration of teaching thinking skills. Most
teachers think that thinking culture is difficult to implement because the students were used to
the traditional approaches of teaching wherein students were required to memorize important
facts. Implementing thinking skills takes time because it requires a lot of training. But if I will be
able to use this in my classroom, I can see independent students who can think out of the box and
learn to explore and discover how and why things exist or happen using their critical and creative
thinking.

3. Reflecting on your past classes prior to this COVID19 Pandemic, would you consider
your classroom as a thinking classroom? Why or Why not?

*Prior to Covid 19 pandemic, I will definitely consider my classroom as a thinking classroom

because developing the higher order thinking skills (HOTS) of my students will create a wide
range of perspectives and prepare my students for a future of effective problem-solving,
thoughtful decision making, and lifelong learning to surpass all life’s challenges. “You cannot
give what you don’t have”, this saying holds true since I realized the importance of preparing
myself and keeping me equipped with thinking skills by applying them in my everyday life so
that I can pass them on to my students the skills they need to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
