 LO 03: Relate the principles underlying operating systems and system software

Introduction

The operating system is a very important subject domain related to Computer systems. It acts
as the interface between the user and the computer hardware. An operating system controls
the execution of application software and manages the computer hardware.

At present people use the operating system daily and we can find Operating Systems
everywhere around us. So there are multiple reasons behind the study of the operating
systems. Having a clear understanding of Operating Systems will help to learn how to
manage the computer resources appropriately. On the other hand, it will be helpful to solve
any problem occurring in an operating system.

Tasks (100 Marks)

1. What is an Operating System, What are the examples of the most popular operating
systems and their characteristics? (Take 5 examples) (20 marks) LO 03.

2. Describe the following mechanisms that are found in most computers related to the
CPU. In each case, state what the technique is, how it works, and how it helps to
improve the computer performance. (25 marks) LO 03

a) Machine Instruction Cycle.

b) CPU Scheduling Algorithms.

c) Direct Memory Access (DMA).

3
3. The main task an operating system carries out is the allocation of resources and
services. Explain the following Operating Systems functions: (15 marks) LO 03

a) Program execution.

b) I/O operations.

c) Communications.

d) Error detection.

e) Resource allocation.

4. Now a day almost all computing devices have the capability to process more than one
task simultaneously. What are the advantages of “Real-time Systems Distributed
Systems”? What is the difference between Real-time and Distributed Systems?
Compare and Contrast. (10 marks) LO 03

5. Describe the following Operating Systems related terms: (10 marks) LO 03

a) Kernel

b) Bootstrap Program.

6. Presentation and Individual Viva Session (20 marks) LO 03

Guidelines for Presentation

 Minimum 5 slides for each member

 Suitable slide theme

 Clearly, easily readable text and suitable graphics (Graphs, Charts, etc.)

 Limit the number of words you have on each slide

 Font

 Suitable clear and readable font style

 Not to use less than 20pt font (or more).

 Titles -30-40pt (or more).

 Body text- 20-30pt (or more).

 The student needs to name the presentation softcopy with his/her name with initials
and the ICBT number / University number.

 You are required to submit the soft copy of the presentation slides to ICBT SMIS.

 The student will not be judged on “glitz and glam” on his/her presentation slides.
Therefore, students should not use too much animation or anything that will distract
the audience from the main points of the presentation. Pictures, graphs /Charts are
nice in order to demonstrate a point or show the audience what the student is talking
about but should not put in extraneous pictures just for the sake of having pretty
slides.

 Strict time limits will need to be enforced on student’s presentations. Therefore,

students need to have proper practice before the final presentation.

 Page numbering.

 No watermarks, Headers, and Footers required.

 Referencing and in-text citation should be done strictly using Harvard Referencing
System.
