III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, new content)
Prerequisite skills:
o Ability to spell phonetically.
o Understanding of how to move around the room to complete an activity.
Key vocabulary:
o Matter: Anything that takes up space and has weight.
o 5-Senses: Sight, smell, taste, hear, touch
Big idea:
o We can describe matter using our 5-senses (sight, touch, smell, taste, and sound).
New content:
o Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction –
Have the students make a list of 10 things they can see in the room.
Add some of the objects to the board and discuss how all these objects have one thing in common, they are
made of matter.
B. Development –
Introduce matter as being anything that takes up space and has weight. It is anything we can describe using
our 5-senses.
Display 5-senses anchor chart, discuss each and provide examples. Call on students to share additional
examples of things we can sense with our 5-senses.
Model describing a pencil using our 5-senses and fill out chart.
Distribute 5-senses chart and have students go around to each of the 6 objects placed around the room and
complete the chart by describing each object.
C. Closure –
Discuss some of the objects and have students share what they wrote.
D. Accommodations / Differentiation -
Early finishers will be given additional objects to describe.
E. Assessment/Evaluation plan
1. Formative:
The teacher will evaluate the students 5-senses chart on a 6-point scale to determine their ability to
differentiate between properties of objects such as size, shape, and weight.
o 6= The student described each object using at least 3 senses.
o 5= The student described 5 objects using at least 3 senses.
o 4= The student described 4 objects using at least 3 senses.
o 3= The student described 3 objects using at least 3 senses.
o 2= The student described 2 objects using at least 3 senses.
o 1= The student described 1 object using at least 3 senses.
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Students’ Performance in Terms of States Objectives (Reflection on students performance written
after lesson is taught, includes remediation for students who failed to meet acceptable level of achievement)
