INTRODUCTION

The Department of Works, Niger Delta University, having observed some disturbing
structural anomalies in the university library situated in the main campus, solicited
for the engagement and collaboration with professionals of the Department of Civil
Engineering, Niger Delta University, to ascertain the extent of damage by
conducting detailed integrity tests on the structure.

STRUCTURAL STABILITY CONCERNS

To create a more informative picture of the structural stability concerns, detailed

photographs were taken at respective locations of the structure. Figure 1 below is the
designed foundation layout of the structure

SCOPE OF INTEGRITY TEST

Preliminary studies by members of Staff of the Department of Civil Engineering
Niger Delta University, suggests that the suspected failures are only noticeable at
the ground floor, as no evidence of failure was found at the first floor. This was the
earliest indication that majority of the failures could be as a result of differential
settlement at the failure region, which could have been as a result of poor foundation
design and or the absence of subsoil investigation, coupled with the induced
settlement resulting from the series of flooding experienced by the structure.
Additionally, the structural design is observed to have some variations as compared
to the built-up structure, this was also an indication of a possible cause of some of
the failures. The structural integrity of the structural members is of course another
component that requires assessment as inadequate distribution of stresses could
equally result in most of the identified failures. Slab separations from block works,
possible absence of columns at strategic points as well as possible absence of deck
beams are some additional observations made by the team.
Based on the above, the proposed scope of work will cover the following;
• Subsoil investigation to a minimum depth of 5m
• Non-Destructive rebound hammer tests
Sub-Soil Investigation will include the following;
1. Fieldwork
2. Laboratory
2.1. Particle size distribution
2.2. Atterberg Limits
2.3. Soil Density
2.4. Triaxial Test
2.5. Consolidation Test
3. Analysis and Report
Non destructive rebound hammer tests will include the following
1. Field work
1.1. Foundation Pads
1.2. Starter columns
1.3. Ground-floor columns
2. Analysis and Report
