4.0 Design Approach

The detailed survey has been conducted at proposed bridge location in both upstream and
downstream directions which provide precise stream profile. The L-section and cross sections of the
stream are generated at all required locations including at bridge site, U/S & D/S of bridge location
from survey data.

Catchment area and main stream length has been marked on the toposheet as attached.

Discharge has been calculated using (i) Empirical method, (ii) Rational Method (iii) Slope area method
(iv) Synthetic unit hydrograph method. As per CWC guideline, for catchment area >25 sq.km,
the discharge obtained from SUH method shall be adopted.

The hydrological and hydraulic calculations has been done for 100 years return period.

5.0 Hydrological Calculation

5.1 Peak Design Discharge Calculation
The flood dicharge is computed by different methods as listed below. The values obtained are
compared and highest among these values has been adopted as peak design discharge.
(i) Empirical formula ( Dicken's method)
(ii) Rational method
(iii) Slope Area method
(iv) Synthetic Unit Hydrograph Method ( for Catchment area more than 25 sq. km)
5.1.1. Emperical Method

Discharge by Rational method = 947.17 m3/s ( Not applicable)
Discharge by Observed HFL = 829.85 m3/s
Discharge by SUH Method = 2388.00 m3/s
Hence, Peak Design Discharge = 1.5x 829.85 = 1244.77 m3/s

Note: Dicken's and Rational are suitable for small catchment area, Hence ignored. Comparision
between Slope area and SUH has been made. Also, the area within the catchment area has well
defined irrigation and drainage basin plans, Hence, Flood water shall not directly reaches to bridge
location and having much more time to peak.

4.0 Design Approch

The detailed survey has been conducted at proposed bridge location in both upstream and
downstream directions which provide stream profile.
Cross section and L- section at bridge location have beed taken for analysis from survey data.

Catchment area and main stream length has been marked on the settelite imaginaries as attached.

Discharge has been calculated using (i) Empirical method, (ii) Rational Method (iii) Slope area
method. The highest value of these three values is adopted as design discharge, provided it does not
exceed next highest discharge by more than 50 percent. If it does, restrict it to the limit.

Hence, Peak Design Discharge = 1.5x 95.34 = 143.01 m3/s

Note: Dicken's and Rational are suitable for small catchment area, Hence ignored. Comparision
between Slope area and SUH has been made. Also, the area within the catchment area has well
defined irrigation and drainage basin plans, Hence, Flood water shall not directly reaches to bridge

2.0 Introduction
The Hydrological and hydraulic calculations has been carried out for proposed major
bridge at ch.38.205 Km to justify the waterway required for the stream crossing
the alignment.

Name of Stream : Beas River

Upper Indo Ganga Plains subzone 1 ( e) &
CWC flood estimation Sub zone : Western Himalaya Sub zone 7
Flow Direction : From Right to Left

Normal Annual Rainfall in mm : Varies from 600 to 3000mm plain to hilly region

4.0 Design Approch

The detailed survey has been conducted at proposed bridge location in both upstream and
downstream directions which provide precise stream profile. The L-section and cross sections of the
stream are generated at all required locations including at bridge site, U/S & D/S of bridge location
from survey data.
Catchment area upto Proposed bridge location is 15901 sq. Km within india. Since catchment area is more than

5000 sq km synthetic unit hydrograph method is not applicable. Therefore, design discharge has been

calculated using existing dam data & barrage data located in U/S. There are two irrigation/power house schemes

in U/S. Pong Dam is 155 Km U/S,Shah Nehar Barrage is just D/S of Pong Dam from proposed bridge location.

Design Spill Discharge of Pong Dam is 12375 cumec, Design Flood Discharge of Shah Nehar Barrage is 11043

cumec.Salient Features of these schemes is annexed in the report. The Pong Dam discharge data is interpolated

based on the catchment and worked out the anticipated discharge at proposed bridge location. For the slope

area method, cross section based on the observed HFL at Local enquiry taken on guide bund road crossing at

ch. 36.540 which was touched in 1988 flood ( HFL level- 220.00m). Flood discharge estimated using these

method compared & highest of these adopted as design discharge.

Fixing of Design Discharge on Catchment Area Basis

Where,
QDS = Design Flood at Proposed Bridge Location
QGD = Design Flood at Pong Dam = 11043 cumec
Catchment area upto Proposed Bridge =
CADS =

CAGD = Catchment area upto Pong Dam = 12560 Sq. Km.

Delhi - Katra Project

5.5 Adopted Peak Design Discharge

Outflow discharge of Pong Dam = 12375.00 m3/s
Flood discharge of Shah Nahar Barrage = 11043.00 m3/s
Discharge by Slope area method = 15969.05 m3/s
Discharge by Catchment area basis = 13447.59 m3/s

3
Hence, Peak Design Discharge = 15969.05 m /s

Proposed Cable arrangement with other spans of 1 x 300 + 1 x 700 + 1 x 300 + 9 x 50 +6 x 60 m
Proposed total span = 2140 m

Afflux, h= ( ( v2 / 17.88 ) + 0.015) ( ( A / A1 )2 - 1 )

Where
v - Average velocity of river prior to obstruction in m/sec = 2.15
A - Unobstructed sectional area of river in sq. m = 6447.67
A1 - Sectional area of river at obstruction in sq. m = 6419.14
Afflux h in m = 0.002

Adopt afflux 0.002 m

HFL without Afflux = 220.025 m
HFL with Afflux = 220.027 m

Minimum Vertical clearance required = 4 m ( Navigational vent height)

Minimum soffit level required = 220.027 + 4
= 224.027 m
Min. Vent Required = 224.027 -206.941
= 17.086 m

8 Scour Calculation
The mean depth of scour dsm shall be calculated below HFL as per the provision of
Clause 703.2 of IRC :78 -2000

dsm = 1.34 x ( Db2/Ksf)1/3

where,
dsm = Mean scour depth below HFL
Db = (Q/L) ,
Q= Discharge adopted for scour depth calculations
(after increasing the design discharge as per clause 703.1.1 of IRC 78: 2000)
L= Clear waterway after making deductions for obstruction upto HFL
Db = The design discharge for foundation per metre with effective linear waterway
Ksf = Silt factor for a representative sample of bed material obtained upto the level
of anticipated deepest scour
HFL = Highest flood level

Design Discharge Q = 15969.05 m3/s

HFL Calculated = 220.027 220.027 220.027 m
