Flood Estimation:
3
50 years design flood discharge (m /s) = Q50 = 0.278 C I A (From Cl: 2.1, RDSO Report No. RBF - 16)
Where,
C= Runoff coefficient
50 year rainfall intensity (mm/h) lasting for tc hour duration
I=
where tc is the time of concentration
2
A= Catchment area in Km

STEP-1:- Calculation of Runoff Coefficient (C) :

0.2
Now, C= X (R F) (From Cl: 2.1.1, RDSO Report No. RBF - 16)

Value of "X" depends upon the soil type and location as given in Chart No 1

Chart No 1
Sl. No. Description of catchment Value of X
1 Sandy Soil/sandy loam/arid areas 0.249
2 Alluvium / silty loam / coastal areas 0.332

Red Soil / clayey loam / grey or brown alluvium /

3 0.415
cultivated plains / tall crops /wooded areas

Black cotton/ clayey soil / lightly covered / lightly

4 0.456
wooded / plain and barren / submontane and plateau

5 Hilly soils / plateau and barren 0.498

STEP-2:- Calculation of time of concentration (tc) :

3 0.345
tc= [ L / H ]
= [ 1.169^3 / 51.22 ]^ 0.345
= 0.302 h
= 18 min
STEP-3:- Calculation of areal reduction factor depending upon catchment
area and duration of rainfall (F) :

Value of F is calculated from the table given in RDSO Report RBF 16

Value of F
Catchment area Duration of rainfall
2
km < 30 mins 30 to 60 mins 60 to 100 mins
A < 2.5 0.72 0.81 0.88
2.5≤A≤5 0.71 0.8 0.87
5<A≤13 0.7 0.79 0.86
13<A<25 0.68 0.78 0.85
Note: Rainfall duration shall be equal to the calculated t c for the catchment

F= 0.72

STEP-4:- Calculation of 50 year 24 hour point rainfall (R) :

R= 220 mm as read from 3f (lower Godawari) subzone. From the map R value multiplied wth 1.15
R= 253 mm

And, For Black cotton/ clayey soil / lightly covered / lightly wooded / plain and barren / (select soil type as given)
submontane and plateau
X = 0.456

Therefore, C C = 0.456 x (25.3 x 0.72)^ 0.2

= 0.815

STEP-5:- Calculation of I :

From Fig. 2
The location of this bridge lies in sub-zone 3f of Hydrometerological Subzones of India

From Fig. 4
Thus, for curve corresponding to Zone 3
And,
For T = tc hrs = 0.302 h,
Ratio of 50 yrs tc hrs rainfall / 50 yrs 24 hrs rainfall = 0.175

For T = 1 h,
Ratio of 50 yrs 1 hr rainfall / 50 yrs 24 hrs rainfall = 0.38

Therefore, Ratio of 50 yrs tc hrs rainfall / 50 yrs 1 hr rainfall (K)= [ 0.175/0.38 ] = 0.461

Now, R50 24 hour rainfall = 253 mm (as in step 4)

So, R50 1 hour rainfall = [ 253 x 0.38 ]

= 96.14 mm

Now, R50 tc hour rainfall= K x R50 1 hour rainfall

= 44.321 mm

So, I = R50 (tc) / tc

= 44.321 / 0.302
= 146.758 mm/h

Hence, total discharge = Q50 = 0.278 C I A

= 0.278 x 0.815 x 146.758 x 0.2403
= 7.9902 cumecs
Fixing of Bridge Length:

1) From Modified Rational Method:

Discharge Calculated: = 7.99 m3/s

3
Calculation of Regime width for discharge of 7.99 m /s
Pw=1.811 X C X Q^1/2 (As per cl No. 4.5.3 of IRS Substructure foundation code.)

Where, P= Wetted perimeter in meters which can be taken as the effective width of waterway

Q= Design discharge in m3/s

C= A Coefficient normally equal to 2.67
= 1.811 X 2.67 X 7.9902^0.5 13.668 m
2) Bank to bank distance:
Bank to bank distance: = 19.060 m

From the above data and also considering the suitable abutment location and site condition,the proposed
bridge has been fixed as the details given below:
No. of Span = =2
Span Arrangement =2x12.2M _psc slab
Total bridge length (dirt wall inner to inner) = 26.82
C/C of abutment = 26.800 m
Let,
Width of abutment = 1.200 m
Width of pier = 1.200 m
Width of Clear waterway, B'= 26.8-(2-1)x1.2-1.2x2/2 = 24.4 m
Rugosity coefficient, n= = 0.05
Slope, S = 0.0438152
2/3 1/2
Q50=(B'xd)x(1/n)x((B'xd)/(B'+2d)) x (S) = 7.99 m3/s
Depth of flow,d = = 0.219 m
LBL = = 412.493 m
Hence, Calculated HFL = = 412.712 m
Survey HFL = = 0m
Take calculated HFL

2/3 1/2
Velocity = (1/n)x((B'xd)/(B'+2d)) x (S) = 1.503 m/s
Afflux and Maximum scour level calculations
HFL = 412.712 m ( From Calculated data)
LBL = 412.493 m ( From survey data)
Width of side wall = 1.200 m
Width of mid wall = 1.200 m

Total bridge length (dirt wall inner to inner) = 26.820 m

C/C of abutment = 26.8 m
Face to face of abutment = 25.600 m
Width of Clear waterway, B'= 26.8-(2-1)x1.2-1.2x2/2 = 24.4 m
( As per cl. No. 4.5.6 of IRS Substructure Foundation Code )
3
Design discharge = 7.990 m /s
Considering Velocity = 1.503 m/s
3
Design Discharge for foundation(Qf) = 7.9902 x 1.33 = 10.627 m /s
Design per linear m = qf = 0.43 cumec/m
Average Ksf for abutment (from soil report) = 2.580
Average Ksf for Pier (from soil report) = 2.580
(For Wardha at hivra site of Godavari Basin, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA CENTRAL
WATER COMMISSION)
Here, Width of waterway provided = 26.820 m
Lacey's Regime Width = 13.668 m
Width of waterway provided > Lacey's Regime Width
So, Following, (Ref. Cl: 4.6.3 of IRS Substructure Foundation Code )
Normal Scour depth from HFL for Abutment = 0.473 (Qf / f)^1/3 = 0.758 m
Normal Scour depth from HFL for Pier = 0.473 (Qf / f)^1/3 0.758 m
Scour Level:
For Abutment ( 1 x DSL)= 412.712 - 0.758 412.000 m
For Abutment (1.25XDSL)= 412.712 - 0.758 x 1.25= 411.800 m
For Pier(Non Siesmic) (2 x DSL)= 412.712 - 0.758 x 2= 411.200 m
For Pier(Siesmic) (2 x0.9x DSL)= 412.712 - 0.758 x 2 x 0.9= 411.400 m
Hence this level is below LBL, So Scour will occur.
Calculation of afflux:
Discharge = 8.0 cumec
Velocity (V) = 1.503 m/s
2
Area (A) = 5.32 m
Total Linear Waterway = 25.600 m
Average Depth = 5.32/25.6 = 0.21 m
Clear Linear Waterway due to obstruction= 24.4 m
2
Area(a) = 5.124 m

As per Cl. No. 4.7.1 of IRS Substructure & Foundation Code

= (0.13+ 0.01524) x[(1.08)-1] = 0.011 m

(Considering HFL is including Afflux)
So, Afflux= 0m
