Estimation of design discharge in respect of Bridge 21 (At Ch :9437.565 m)

Proposed bridge 2 x 45.7 Composite Girder
I. Hydraulic particulars :
Latitude = 31°17′59″N
Longitude = 76°28′31″E

The Topographical map available for the project stretch show clearly identified channel at the proposed
location. We have also identified channel based on the survey conducted within the ROW. We have
plotted on the topography map based on the survey data and extended with the help of contours to
work out catchment area.
After arriving catchment area and rain fall data we have calculated discharge and waterway based on
RBF 16.

1 Bed Level BL = 354.943 m

2 Ground Level GL = 354.943 m
3 Catchment area A = 0.026 Sq Km
4 Length of longest stream from source to bridge site (L) L = 0.375 Km
5 Height of farthest point along the point of interest along river (H) H = 47.057 m
6 Level at the farthest point: = 402.000 m
7 Equivalent stream slope (S) 1 in 7.97
8 As per Geotechnical report (Provided by RVNL) - Bore Log @ 9.300 km = Boulders
9 Sub zone Western Himalayas Zone 7 = Zone 7
10 Formation level FL = 379.318 m

II. Calculation of flood discharge (Rational Method)

(ii) From Flood Estimation Methods (RBF: 16), clause 2.1.1, for Hilly soils / Plateau
Rainfall runoff coefficient C = 0.498 (R*F)^0.2 ………….(2) --- (Depends on type of soil)

Where R is 50 year 24 hour rain fall − 100 cm for Zone 7. R = 100.000 cm

F is area reduction factor read from Flood Estimation Methods (RBF: 16) under Para 2.1.1 for an
appropriate value of tc.

S<100)
0 . 618xL …………..(3 b)
t c=
A0 .1 xs0 . 2

Therefore , time of concentration value is tc = 0.202 HRS

For obtained tc value , the area reduction factor is F = 0.72 HRS
From Equation (2), rainfall runoff coefficient is C = 1.171

(iii) Intensity of rainfall (I) is calculated as : I = R50 tc …………(4)

tc
Where, R50 tc = K x R50 I ……..(5)

Where, K = tc hr ratio
and
1 hr ratio

R50 I = 1 hr ratio x R 50 (24 hrs rainfall)……(6)

tc hr ratio from figure 4 of RBF 16 = 0.2
As per RBF 16 clause 2.1.3 ii (c)
1 hr ratio shall be of 24hour rainfall value = 0.37
Therefore, Value of K is K = 0.54
R 50 (1 hrs rainfall) with 1h RF / 24h RF = 0.37 as per RBF16 & Zone 7(Plate 6)
considering on higher side as 1000 mm = 370 mm
From equation (5), R 50 tc is = 200.00 mm
From equation (4), the intensity of rainfall is I = 992.1 mm/hr
From equation (1),
(iv) Design flood discharge obtained is Q = 8.27 m3/s

III. Water way calculation

(i) Design discharge as per Rational method Q = 8.27 m3/s
(ii) Assumed velocity, since the slope is steep V = 2 m/sec
(iii) Required area of water way , A0 = 4.14 sqm
(iv) Bed Width = 91.4 m
Provided Linear water way is = 91.4 m
Skew Angle = 0 degree
Provided Linear water way in square is = 91.40 m
(v) Depth of water above bed level = 0.83 m
(vi) Designed HFL = 355.770 m
(vii) Vertical Clearance Required (Minimum) = 0.60 m
(viii) Free Board (Formation Level - HFL) >1 (379.318-355.770) = 23.55 m
Hence proposed bridge is 2 x 45.7m Major Bridge with Composite Girder Hence Safe

IV. Scour depth calculations for Design of foundations.

Max Flood Discharge Qd = 8.27 Cumecs
Designed discharge for foundation design as per Clause 4.4 of IRS Substructure Code
Design Discharge Qf (30% increase) = 10.75 Cumecs
Vertical Clearance as per Clause 4.8.1 of IRS Substructure Code
Required Vertical Clearance = 0.6 m
No of Cells = 2
Cell Width = 45.70 m

Water Depth (D) = 0.83 m

Rugosity Coefficient, n = 0.030 Table 1, IS 10430-2000
structure Slope proposed, S = 0.1255

Area (A) = 75.588 m

Perimeter (P) = 94.708 m
Hydralic Radius (R = A/P) = 0.7981
1/2
S = 0.354
2/3 1/2
V = (1/n)*R *S = 10.161 m/sec
Discharge Capacity Qc = 768.07 Cumecs OK

Depth = 3.85 m
Available Vertical Clearance = 3.023 m OK

Discharge Capacity = 8.27

Design Discharge for Foundations, Qf = 10.752 cumec
For Boulders as per IS-3955:1967 code table 1:
Lacey's Silt Factor, f = 9.00
Width of restricted Waterway, W = 91.400 m
Invert Level = 354.94 m

As per IRS Sub Structure Clause 4.6.3 Mean Scour Depth / Laceys Depth,
dsm = 0.473*(Qf/f)^1/3 = 0.502 m

As per IRS Sub Structure Clause 4.6.4 Mean Scour Depth / Laceys Depth,
dsm = 1.338*[(Qf/W)^2/f]^1/3 = 0.2 m

To be on conservative side, we are considering the maximum of the both cases.

For Abutment
dsma = 1.5*dsm = 0.232 m IRS sub structure Clause 4.6.6
Since the ground level at abutment is higher than HFL, Flow of discharge will not be available. Hence no sco
For Pier
dsma = 2*dsm = 0.3089 m

Maximum Scour Level = 354.94 m

Scour Depth Below Invert Level = 0.000 m
Hence Scour will not occur at pier location.
