Society is the group of individuals in a persistent social interaction, or a large group of
people sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political
authority and dominant cultural expectations. To put this simply, people and society have a very
dynamic relationship with each other in which society is made up of people and without people
society does not exists. Because of this reality, considering the society’s role in the growth and
the development of a person, and the persons role in transforming society.
The development of a person is influenced by society in various ways. One important
way society influences us as persons is the ability to define the relationships and interaction
among members. This means society influences interaction of its members through the
establishment of norms, which are the set of traits and behaviors that society considers
acceptable, and are thus encouraged and passed on to other members. Also, through the

m
establishment of these norms, can also influence knowledge and ideas. Norms that are formal

er as
and stringent that define acceptable behaviors of citizens are called laws. Folkways are less

co
formal norms that arise from tradition and do not result in punishment when violated.

Norms, laws, and other rules that regulate human interactions give rise to a social
rs e
system, which is an organized or pattered set of relationships among individuals and groups that

composes society. Social roles are actions and behaviors expected of a certain individual in
which each member is assigned to. People of similar backgrounds or perform similar roles forms
into social groups or social classes. The groups that perform vital functions in society are
o

recognized as social institutions which includes family, school, government and religion. There

are two types of social status which are the ascribed status and achieved status. Ascribed

status is the social position which is attained from birth that is not controllable or cannot be
changed. Achieved status on the other hand, is a social position based from merits or can be
attained as you go on with life.

The historical development of society or social systems has brought about the significant
ar stu

changes in the way human beings relate to each other. Early societies are initially centered on
the family and clan. Virtual societies have brought another great transformation in human
relations, as improved communication technologies make it possible for people from faraway
is

places to interact closely with each other. Today’s modern society enables various people from
diverse backgrounds and varied societies to interact and establish close ties with each other.
Th

Another way society shape us is through social values, which are actions or ideals that
are considered important by society. Values such as cooperation, obedience to the law, concern
sh

for others, and respect for others are considered vital to maintaining an orderly society. A society
that upholds these positive social values will influence its members to uphold positive values. On
the other hand, a society that is defines by negative values will, in turn, produce individuals who
embodies these negative values. Other aspects of society that contributes to the formation of the
individuals includes language, religion and historical events.
