II. Content / Topic Statement of the Problem

A blessed day learner!

I am glad that you are here to learn research.

This module is prepared just for you to learn in the
comfort of your own home.
This module for Practical Research 2 will help you
write your statement of the problem in which this
argument/discussion will help explain or predict a
phenomenon around you.
I am hoping that you will find interest in learning
and applying research in your daily life.
If you find any difficulties, feel free to ask your
parents or contact a teacher for clarification.

3
At the end of this module, you must be able to:
1. define statement of the problem;
2. follow steps in writing statement of the
problem;
3. present a written statement of the problem.

Introduction

One of the steps of the research process is the formulation of a statement of a

problem. It is like planning a perfect route for your dream vacation. In the absence of
this perfect route, it would be difficult to identify the shortest possible route. Another
analogy would be a statement of a problem is like a skeleton of a human being, a clear
foundation. If the foundation is strong enough it would be able to properly support a
human being. According to (Kerlinger, 1986) as cited by (Kumar, 2011), a good
statement of the problem serves as a foundation of a research study; you must know
what the problem is to be able to solve a problem.
The formulation of the problem is like input, output system, the quality of the
research itself, and the validity and reliability of the variables in making causations and
associations are reliant upon it. It may be confusing at first, keep in mind to keep on
scribbling.

It seems that you now have an idea about statement of

the problem. So, let’s work on this together. I know we
can all make it!

4
(Activity 1) WORD SEARCH!
Instruction: Copy the grid and encircle all of the words that are hidden in it.

Great job!

How many words have you found from the word

search activity? Those words will help you appreciate
our lesson on the statement of the problem for your
research.

5
(Activity 2)
Instruction: Let’ process your answers in Activity 1 by answering the questions
below:

1. What words did you find?

Word 1: _______________________________
Word 2: _______________________________
Word 3: _______________________________
Word 4: _______________________________

2. How are these words related in stating research problem?

________________________________________________________________

Starting this point onwards, focus, and do your best

to reflect and create your knowledge based on the
discussions.

6
Lesson: Statement of the Problem

The explanation of an issue presently existing which needs to be addressed is a

statement of the problem. This provides a framework for a research study and
generates questions that need to be answered by the researcher.

A well-formulated statement of the problem establishes the foundation for

everything to follow in your research and will render less problematic conceptual
framework, theoretical framework and methodological difficulties which might be
encountered during the course of research (Bwisa, 2008).

Steps for Stating Research Problem for Test of Relationship

Step 1: Go back to the research title.

Example: Awareness on Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) and Healthcare

II. Content / Topic Stating Research Questions

Dear SHS Learner,

Hello! How are you today? Are you ready to

learn a new lesson today? Ok, let’s start it by asking
questions? How often do you ask questions? For what
purpose? What are the things you need to consider?
How did you feel when your questions were answered?
Today, we are going to learn about asking
questions; but, it is about research questions—
questions which will give direction for your research.
Together, we will learn this concept using this
module.

15
To make you a more competent SHS learner, let
us first set our learning objectives. This module will guide
you in understanding how to state research questions.
Specifically, this will help you gain the concepts
based on the following specific objectives:
1. determine the steps in stating quantitative
research questions; and
2. state research questions.

Introduction

As a researcher, thinking of a research problem or a topic to research on is a

beginning act in research. Another initial research act is asking a set of specific
questions or identifying sub-problems about your research problem (Baraceros, 2016).
A good research question forms backbone of a good research, which in turn is
vital in unraveling mysteries of nature and giving insight into a problem. Research
Question identifies the problem to be studied and guides to the methodology. It leads
to building up of an appropriate hypothesis. Hence, research question aims to explore
an existing uncertainty in an area of concern and points to a need for deliberate
investigation. A good research question helps support a focused arguable thesis and
construction of a logical argument. Thus, formulation of a good research question is
undoubtedly one of the first critical steps in the research process (Ratan, Anand &
Ratan, 2018).

Got it? Let us continue and start the first activity.

16
(Activity 1) WORD SCRAMBLE
Instruction: Arrange the scrambled words to form a sound sentence. Write the

Great job!

You got it. With your accomplishment in this

activity, I’m sure you can make it again in the next
series of activities that we shall have in this module.

Just keep focus and be motivated to pursue

learning more than anything else. Good luck!

17
Now, let’s deepen your answers above.

(Activity 2)

Brilliant! It was an amazing work!

Today, I think is a perfect time for you to
study. I am very proud of you as my student. You
were able to analyze it well.
I am hoping that you will show the same
enthusiasm in our next activity. Let them see that a
learner like you can go an extra mile for the love of
learning. Good luck!

18
Lesson: The Research Questions

Research questions (RQs) are questions derived from the purpose that a
researcher is trying to answer in a study. It will serve as the basis for the introductory
section of your final proposal, directing your reader’s attention quickly to the issues that
your research will address. A research question should be as specific as possible. If the
purpose is quite complex, the researcher can make two or more research questions to
cover it (Pardede, 2018).

The specific questions which are to be answered in the study are called research
questions, and are all in question form. The answer to the research questions should
lead to the solution of the research problem (Faltado, Bombita, Boholano & Pogoy,
2016).

Guidelines in Stating Quantitative Research Questions

Thinking about a research problem or topic is the starting point in doing your
research. This is followed by stating research questions about your research problem.
The following guidelines will help you formulate your research questions in a manner
that is acceptable to the academic community.

1. Formulate a research question that is within your subject of interest and the
one that is researchable.
2. Conduct a research on the chosen topic to find out what has already been
done and what literature already exists.
3. Construct a research problem which could find answers or solutions to the
problem being studied.
4. Make a research question which states the variables of your study and their
relationships with one another.
5. Evaluate your research question whether it is effective or need some revising
or refining.
6. State your research question, if possible, in question form or in interrogative
manner. (Faltado, Bombita, Boholano & Pogoy, 2016)
7. Make your research questions SMARTER.

19
Qualities of a Good Research Question (SMARTER)

1. SPECIFIC – means focusing on an issue for an in-depth analysis of the

problem being studied, clear and feasible.
2. MEASURABLE – means it can be analyzed by an appropriate assessment
tool such as statistical analysis.
3. ACHIEVABLE – means that it should be within the ability or capability of the
researcher carrying out the research.
4. REALISTIC – means formulating a research question within their context or
field of interest.
5. TIME-CONSTRAINED – means it can be finished within a given time set by
the researcher.
6. ETHICAL – means that it is free from deceptive practices in research which
could minimize or avoid the risk of harm to the respondents.
7. RELEVANT – means that it is responding to the current situation, literature or
practice.

Stating Research Questions

In stating research questions, the research objective and types of research

design need to be reviewed. There are basic research designs which are commonly
used in quantitative research, the descriptive, comparative, and correlational.
Descriptive research design is concerned with describing the nature, characteristics and
components of the population or phenomenon. The design attempts to find general
attributes of the presently existing population and determine the frequency with which it
occurs (Faltado, Bombita, Boholano & Pogoy, 2016). On the other hand, comparative
research design deals with the significant difference of two or more groups. And,
correlational research design analyzes the relationship which exists between and
among variables.
Research questions can be stated in general and specific form. Below are the
steps in stating the main research question for comparative and correlational study.

20
Steps for Stating Research Questions for Test of Relationship

Step 1: Go back to the research title.

Example: Awareness on COVID-19 and Healthcare Practices of Senior High School
Students in Pilipi National High School.

II. Content / Topic Scope and Delimitations of a Research Study

Hello, Everyone!
Magandang Buhay! How are you today? I hope you
are all doing great. Did you enjoy your previous modules
in Practical Research? I’m sure you did. Today, we will be
learning more on how to become good
researchers/writers someday. I hope you will get excited
as we will be discussing on this module how to indicate
scope and delimitations of a research study.

In this module, you will be able to indicate the scope

and delimitation of a study/research. Specifically, you will
be able to:
1. define scope and delimitations of a research
study;
2. indicate the scope and delimitations of a
research study.

31
Introduction

What is scope and delimitations of a research study? There are two

fundamentals in a research paper that tell the reader on what information is included in
the research and give explanation why the author chose that information; these are the
scope and delimitations of a research study. Though scope and delimitations make
clear the way a study is limited, this information adds believability to the study.

You have now a slight idea on what we will be

discussing about. So, let’s work on this together. I
know we can all make it. Let’s get going.

(Activity 1) THINK IT YOUR WAY

Instruction: Look at the picture. List down your observations.

_________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________

32
How did you find the activity? Have you observed
thoroughly the picture? Can you make statements on
what is the picture all about? Well, your answers vary
from one another. So, nothing to worry about.

(Activity 2)
Instruction: The previous activity will guide you on how to indicate scope and
delimitation of a study. Answer these:

1. Based on the picture, what kind of community do you think it is?

_______________________________________________________________

2. Do you think they experience problems in that community?

_______________________________________________________________

3. What problems do you think they experience in that community?

_______________________________________________________________

Today, we are going to learn what scope and

delimitation of a study. Thus, after knowing the meaning of
it, you can already indicate the scope and delimitation of
your study.

33
Lesson: Scope and Delimitation of a Research
Study

Scope of a Study

Scope refers to the involvedness at which the research area will be discovered.
Facts and theories about the subject are included in this area. For instance, one might
decide to conduct a study of the impact of digital technology on the academic
performance of high school students. However, it's infeasible to cover all aspects of the
selected subject. If so, the scope will have to be restricted to a specific section of the
target population over a specified duration.
In the above-cited study, a group of 30 students in grades 7 to 9 at one particular
school would be an ideal coverage to study their academic performance for five months.
These would form the delimitations of the research.

Delimitation of a Study

Delimitation is the parameters or characteristics that limit the scope and outline
the boundaries of the study. These parameters include sample size, time, and
geographic area. Additionally, the researcher is free to decide which research tools and
methodologies to use as well as particular theories that apply to the data. Delimitations
like insufficient time and financial resources might be imposed to allow further analysis
or investigations.
Here, researchers are tasked with the responsibility of explaining why specific
exclusions and choices were made and how they might affect the outcome of the
research. In the example mentioned above, the researcher might explain why a sample
group of 30 students was chosen together with children from grades 3 to 5 and not the
rest of the grades.
