Question 1

Formula: Angle of Impact, i = Sin-1 (Width / Length)

Height or Point of Origin, H = [Tan (i)] x Distance to the area of convergence, D

i. AOI = sin-1 (1.6/6.0)

= 15.5o
H = [Tan (15.5)] x 100 cm
= 27.7 cm

ii. AOI = sin-1 (2.4/4.2)

= 34.9o
H = [Tan (34.9)] x 100 cm
= 69.8 cm

iii. AOI = sin-1 (2.2/5.4)

= 24.0o
H = [Tan (24.0)] x 100 cm
= 44.5 cm

iv. AOI = sin-1 (2.6/3.0)

= 60.1o
H = [Tan (60.1)] x 100 cm
= 173.9 cm

v. AOI = sin-1 (0.75/5.5)

= 7.8o
H = [Tan (7.8)] x 100 cm
= 13.7 cm

vi. AOI = sin-1 (1.7/1.9)

= 63.5o
H = [Tan (63.5)] x 100 cm
= 200.6 cm

Question 4

a. Determine the direction in which the blood was travelling

b. Draw lines of convergence
c. Draw a small circle around the intersection to indicate the area of convergence.
d. Measure the distance in millimetres from the area of convergence to the front edge of
the blood spatter (droplet #3) using a metric ruler.
0.8 cm x 10 = 8 mm

e. Using the scale of 1 mm = 1.5 feet, determine the actual distance.

8 mm x 1.5 = 12 feet

f. Using blood droplet 3;

i. Measure the width and length of the blood droplet
-Width: 0.5 cm
-Length: 1.3 cm

ii. Divide the width by the length (width / length)

Width/length = 0.5/1.3
= 0.38 cm

iii. Determine the angle of impact

Angle of Impact, i = Sin-1 (Width / Length)
= 22.6o

iv. Determine the height of the source of blood droplet 3

H = [Tan (i)] x Distance to the area of convergence, D
= [Tan (22.6)] x 0.8 cm
= 0.33 cm
