P Cubed Quick Start Guide

What’s  in  P  Cubed

Pivot3  P  Cubed  provides  a  complete  VMware  View  5.0  management  system

Components
• AD01  is  Microsoft  Active  Directory,  DHCP,  DNS

• ManagementStation  includes  vSTAC  Manager,  etc
vSTAC  Manager  is  the  configuration  and  management  software  for  Pivot3  STACs.

• vCenter  is  VMware  Virtual  Center  for  Virtual  Desktops
The  vCenter  Server  is  a  server  that  acts  as  a  central  administrator  for  ESX/ESXi  hosts  that  are
connected  on  a  network.    A  vCenter  Server  provides  the  central  point  for  configuring,  provisioning,
and  managing  virtual  machines  in  the  datacenter.
View  Composer  is  installed  as  a  software  service  on  the  vCenter  to  allow  VMware  View  to  rapidly
deploy  multiple  linked-‐clone  desktops  from  a  single  centralized  base  image.

P Cubed Quick Start Guide

• ViewConnection  is  VMware  View  Connection  Server

The  VMware  View  Connection  server  is  a  software  service  that  acts  as  a  broker  for  client
connections  by  authenticating  and  then  directing  incoming  user  requests  to  the  appropriate  virtual
desktop.

• Golden_Desktop  is  reference  desktop  for  Windows  7
The  Virtual  Desktop  has  a  View  Agent  that  is  a  software  service  that  is  installed  on  all  guest  virtual
machines  in  order  to  allow  them  to  be  managed  by  VMware  View.

•  Pivot3_VM  is  Pivot3  Storage  Virtual  Appliance
The  Pivot3_  VM  contains  the  vSTAC  operating  system  (vSTAC  OS)  provides  an  intuitive  appliance
approach  as  it  manages  data  distribution  across  Pivot3  vSTAC  Appliances  to  provide  scalable
availability,  performance  and  capacity.  The  vSTAC  OS  runs  on  each  appliance  to  aggregate  the
physical  resources  of  the  appliances,  automatically  load  balance  across  the  appliances  and  protect
against  component  failures.
Advanced  disk  protection  from  the  vSTAC  OS  includes  RAID  1p,  RAID  5e,  RAID  6e  and  RAID  6x:
-‐ With  RAID  5e,  one  disk  failure  or  one  appliance  failure  will  not  affect  data
-‐ With  RAID  1p  and  RAID  6e,  up  to  3  simultaneous  disk  failures  will  not  affect  data
-‐ RAID  1p  and  RAID  6e  also  protects  data  in  the  case  of  an  entire  appliance  failure  and  up  to  1
drive  failure
-‐ With  RAID  6x,  up  to  5  simultaneous  disk  failures  will  not  affect  data
-‐ RAID  6x  also  protects  data  in  the  case  of  an  entire  appliance  failure  and  up  to  2  drive  failures
As  with  any  centralized  resource,  it  is  important  that  the  data  stored  be  available  and  accessible.
The  Pivot3  storage-‐centric  approach  for  application  environments  characterized  by  high-‐capacity
needs  and  I/O-‐intensive  workloads  offers  higher  performance,  lower  cost  and  higher  availability
than  traditional  alternatives.
P  Cubed  is  preconfigured  with  Replica  and  Desktop  LUNs  at  RAID  1  and  View  Environment  LUN  at
RAID  6.    In  production  scale-‐out  with  additional  vSTAC  VDIs,  the  Replica  and  Desktop  LUNs  are
preferred  to  be  RAID  1p  and  the  View  Environment  LUN  is  preferred  to  be  RAID  6e.

P Cubed Quick Start Guide

P  Cubed  has  six  Network  Interface  Card  (NIC)  ports.    The  physical  NICs  for  vmnic0  and  vnmic1  auto-‐
negotiate  from  1  to  10  Gigabit  Ethernet.  The  physical  NICs  for  vmnic2  through  vmnic5  are  1  Gigabit
Ethernet.
vmnic4  and  vmnic5  are  redundant  the  VMware  management  network.    The  NIC  allows  connections  for
vSphere  Client  and  a  path  to  the  ManagementStation.
vmnic2  is  to  be  connected  to  the  customer’s  production  network.  The  NIC  allows  access  to  the  View
Connection  server.    vmnic3  may  be  used  for  redundancy  of  the  production  network.
vmnic0  and  vmnic1  are  unused  by  a  P  Cubed  POC  deployment.    Scaling  the  system  with  additional
vSTAC  VDI  appliances  will  require  usage  of  vmnic0  and  vmnic1  for  redundant  iSCSI  Storage  Networks.

License  Windows  Virtual  Machines

You  have  been  provided  2  License  Keys  for  Windows  Server  2008  R2.    Each  one  of  the  key  stickers  has
both  a  virtual  and  a  physical  key.    You  are  going  to  be  using  the  Virtual  License  keys  as  each  one  can  be
used  to  license  two  machines.
The  fastest  way  to  do  this  is  make  sure  that  both  the  Production  and  Management  network  have  access
to  the  Internet.    If  one  does,  and  the  other  doesn’t  make  note  of  which  one  does  as  you  are  going  to  be
adding  a  network  card  to  each  VM  that  doesn’t  have  internet  access  and  assigning  that  NIC  to  the
network  with  internet  access  for  the  purpose  of  licensing  Windows.  Once  licensed  this  NIC  will  be
removed
For  those  VM’s  which  already  have  internet  access,  license  windows  per  normal.  For  the  ADO1  VM  and
each  additional  VM  we  will  go  through  the  following  steps  to  add  them  to  the  network  that  has  internet
access.

License  AD01
1. Right  click  on  ADO1  and  choose  Open  Console

2. Log  in  to  windows  using  u/p  administrator/Pivot3!
3. Until  you  have  disabled  DHCP  on  AD01  we  don’t  want  to  place  it  on  our  network  with  internet,  as
this  might  make  it  a  Rogue  DHCP  server.

b. Otherwise  from  the  Network  Label  choose  Production  Network  from  the  Dropdown  if  that

15. If  the  network  that  has  internet  is  has  a  DHCP  server  associated  with  it  then  this  NIC  will  grab  an  ip
address  and  you  should  be  able  to  register  windows  per  normal.
