MODULE 6: DIGITAL AND
VIRTUAL SELF
Virtual Selves, Real Relationships: An Exploration of the Context
Topic: and Role for Social Interactions in the Emergence of Self in
Virtual Environment.

Duration: 2 weeks

This module introduces to students the specific ways on how the


social media and their online self-presentation influence the
creation and understanding of their own selves and behavior.
Description: The module also gives opportunity for the students to discuss
how their digital or virtual selves influence their interactions in
the real world.

Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:

1. Understand the concept and different elements of the


digital or virtual self and its influence on one’s tactical
impression management and self-presentation;

3. Develop a discernment on what kind of digital self they
would like to present and which self to be presented in their

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY

Description: This preliminary activity aims to guide the students in


reading and understanding the assigned article in this module. It also
sets the tone and provides students more personal connection to the
lesson to promote and encourage active learning engagement among
them.

Instructions: Create your own Avatar using your Facebook Avatar


application OR choose a memory from 5 years ago that you posted in
your social media accounts and explain thoroughly how you came up
with that image/chose that post.

Description: In this section, students are expected to


process and deepen their understanding about the
topic and ideas in the article.
Instructions: At this point, it is expected that you have
already thoroughly studied the assigned reading
material. Hence, you are expected to provide in-depth
discussion with the class through the following guide
questions.
Guide questions:
1. What do we mean by “digital or virtual self”?
2. What are the elements of the Digital Self?
3. What are the positive and negative effects of social
media and online self-presentations to one’s self-
image and self-esteem?
4. What are the positive and negative effects of social
media and online self-presentations to one’s social
interaction in the real world?
DEEPENING

5. What can we do to protect ourselves from the


acts of cyber bullying and digital self-harm? You
may relate your answer to the avatar you have
previously created.

SYNTHESIS

Description: This penultimate section of the module aims to


synthesize the core learning of the students in this topic.
Direction: After reading and learning this topic, it is time to
synthesize your learning through a tweet! Using only the allowable
number of characters in a single tweet (280 characters / letters),
answer the question below. Use the hashtag #OLSelf for easy
identification of your tweet. Those who have no Twitter account,
you can answer the question in MS Word using the same number of
allowable characters for a single tweet. Take a screenshot of your
tweet or answer on MS Word and email it to your facilitator.
NOTE: Only single tweet is allowed. No thread tweets.

Instructions: A. Work on this activity by group


(maximum of 3 members per group).
▪ Create a minimum of 3-to-5-minute infomercial
that:
1. Discusses the difference between digital/ virtual self
and actual self.
2. Presents a problem caused by social media that
affects the presentation of the self and explains its’
consequences to the development of the concept of
self. You also need to identify possible solution/s and
explain its effectiveness in addressing the problem.
Additional Instructions:
¢Concepts in the infomercial must be strictly related
to the materials discussed (refer to the concepts
above for guidance). Make your own title of the
infomercial.

▪ Use sound effects or graphics if necessary. Be


creative in executing the concepts in your
infomercial.
▪ Infomercial must be ORIGINAL and not
plagiarized. Plagiarized works are not
acceptable and shall be given a zero mark.
▪ Explicit contents and language are not allowed.
▪ Submit your infomercial via Canvas submission
