Let’s Learn!
Fad is an exquisite societal pattern but did not last longer. It spreads
widely and effectively to the demands of every individual. Moreover, it is a
temporary form of fashion, interest, or any crazing activity that people
become enthusiastic. It may include foods, clothing, hairstyles, habits, toys
and hobbies or past times.
Trends and fads should not be mistaken as the same. They may have
similarities but they are exactly different and may sometimes mislead
decision makers. They may play a very important role in an organization or
business but they should be considered separately. Remember that fads are
short-lived while trends get stronger over time.
They are actually existing in their respective phenomena that will last
depending on the performance of the people who follows the trends and
fads. During this scenario a trend will become a fad and this make a
difference between the two.

What More?
A. Idea or Innovation. Ideas may be too many out there but people these
days always look for something new---that is innovation. These may refer,
for example, to old problems adopting new solutions or new problems
having old solution---still an innovation. When people hear something, they
!4
always look for the idea behind. Reasonable and acceptable ideas may
provide useful knowledge and may bring new ideas when combined with
another lead to excellent innovative ideas.
B. Consistency. When these ideas are introduced, acceptability is
consistently increasing among people. They find it applicable as solution or
answer to their situation. It does not immediately fade but rather develops a
growing interest among people and stay as part of culture for a longer time
possible.
C. Impact. It brings change and develops people and systems. It has a
lasting effect on organizations and business systems and is becoming more
widely acceptable to majority of people expecting to benefit from it. An
example of a trend that develops great impact is the use of the ATM in
banking. Today, it has expanded into online banking.
How to spot a trend? Primarily, to consider it a trend, there should be
the presence of all these elements. But to spot an idea that would develop
into a trend could be difficult especially for business organizations or
marketing agencies trying to introduce something new in the field that will
make a difference in the way they do business. Here are some of the
guidelines.
1. Identify the opportunity. When one sees something new, or an idea
rising, he/she has to consider the opportunities ahead. Questions like
What opportunities can I take with the new idea? or How can this idea
bring a good opportunity for many people? are good points to consider.
Even problems or bad situation create good opportunity to improve and
develop. It could grow into trend.
2. Reflect on your own. What do you have at the moment? Look outside
your business and see what they are doing. They may be using things that
you do not use yet and find them useful. When they adapt the trend,
would you do it the same way they would do things or find your own
means of doing it? Could you be of the same level or would you think
ahead and be a leader of the trend?
3. Be well informed. Follow social media, blogs and website. They may
provide you information on what the hot issues are, the talk of the town,
the latest craze and what makes the people react more. Follow certain
people like politician, educators or celebrities. They can provide
meaningful insights and information on what acceptable ideas are. They
could also give business organizations and marketing strategists new
sense of understanding the changing public perceptions.
4. Explore the social media. Find your friends, relatives, business partners
and even competitors. Find what they follow, what they like and what
!5
interests them. Use social media to see what gets viral, the fads, and find
out how you could get in the situation and be part of the trend.
5. Be careful with the information. Not all information give you the truth.
Others are deceiving; some are misleading. Trust a second opinion. It will
help. Consult an expert and find reliable information.
6. Learning Task 3: Analyze the situation and answer the statement that
follows in your notebook.
