Standards

Objective
Students will be able to (SWBAT):
Understand that goals are fluid and an important self-motivational tool in the workplace.
Set personal career-based goals.
Use the S.M.A.R.T method in goal making.
Evaluate the difference between realistic and unrealistic goals.
Distinguish which goals are sort-term and which are long-term.
Make a list using short-term goals to achieve their long-term goal.

Outcome
Students will demonstrate competency in career-based goal making. They will understand the difference between long-term and short-term
goals, determine realistic goals and use the S.M.A.R.T method to pinpoint specific steps needed in achieving their overall goals.

Procedures
Starter (3 min): Introduce PowerPoint and Group Activity.
Engage (5 min): Divide the class into 3 groups and have each group sing their assigned song :
Group 1: ABCs
Group 2: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
Group 3: Baa, Baa, Black Sheep (5 min).
Explore (7 min):
What was the goal with this activity?
Everyone participated but did we accomplish anything?
Define Goals and discuss how they can lead to success in the workplace.

Application (7 min): Have groups return and introduce new activity with the Row Your Boat round. Briefly discuss how effort correlates with
success when goal making.
Extend (20 min): Have students write a list of professional goals. Watch video on long-term and short-term goals
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAWWlUDdTp4. Afterwards, have them make a new list and categorize their lists into those categories.
Briefly discuss unrealistic goals and encourage them to justify their finalized goal sheet.
Closure (15 min):
Review key points from the lesson.
Goals can change, but it helps to write them out into a plan.
Workplace goals can help further your career. Your effort is applied to overall advancement!
Goals should be specific.
Goals need to be realistic.
Short-term goals act as steppingstones to help you achieve bigger, long-term goals.
Long-term goals are goals for your future.
Introduce Goal Staircase worksheet homework.
Choose a long-term career goal and complete the Staircase Worksheet with the short-term goals that will help you to achieve your
overall goal!
