 Positive sentences

s.p.p + verb ‘be’ was/were + main verb in -ing + complement.

 Negative sentences

s.p.p + verb ‘be’ was/were+ negative clause ‘not’ + main verb in -ing + complement.

 is used for actions that are finished and do not have any connection
with present

 PAST CONTINUOUS
 talks about an action in the past that had some duration
 is not used with stative verbs (e.g. understand, know, ...)
 is usually combined with past simple to show the difference between them:
past continuous is often used as „background„ to some other action that took
place (e.g. While I was having a shower, the phone rang.)
