Introduction:
Any material set aside for study by a chemist is known as chemical system. You will be given a chemical system;
try to find out if the parts of the system show the same observable properties.

Objectives:
For you to complete the activity, you should be able to:
1. Describe homogenous and heterogeneous chemical system.

Materials:

NOTE: YOU MAY NOT LITERALY PERFORM OR USE THESE MATERIALS AS LONG AS YOU CAN FIGURE
OUT THE COMBINATIONS OF THESE. Kindly refer on the table below.

Salt, water, gravel and sand, filtered orange juice, corn grain and rice grain, coconut oil, starch and flour

Procedure:
1. Identify the number of phases in a given chemical system listed in the table below.
2. Classify as to homogenous or heterogeneous.
3. Write your observation in the table below.

Observations:

5.Starch and flour 1 EVENLY DISTRIBUTED CAN’T BE IDENTIFIED Homogenous
6.Coconut oil 1 EVENLY DISTRIBUTED CAN’T BE IDENTIFIED Homogenous

Guide Question:
1. Which chemical system is homogenous? Heterogeneous?
- The chemical systems that are homogeneous are salt dissolved in water, filtered orange juice, starch and
flour, and coconut and oil because they are evenly distributed, and they cannot be identified in the chemical
system. On the other hand, the chemical systems that are heterogeneous are gravel and sand, and corn
grain and rice grain because both of them are not evenly distributed and can be identified in the system.
Generalization:
1. Differentiate Homogeneous mixture from Heterogeneous mixture.

- A homogeneous mixture has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout. Many
homogeneous mixtures are commonly referred to as solutions. A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly
different substances or phases. The three phases or states of matter are gas, liquid, and solid.

Evaluation:
Answer the following by encircling the letter of your choice.

1. Homogenous mixture is a:
a. Two-phase system only b. One-phase system only c. Two or more phases

2. Heterogeneous mixture consists of:

a. Two phases only b. One phase only c. Two or more phases

3. Which of the following is a homogenous mixture:

a. Soft drink b. Kerosene c. Foamy beer

4. Parts of heterogeneous mixture:

a. Cannot be identified b. can be identified c. are the same

5. Which is an example of a heterogeneous mixture:

a. Fruit salad b. Strained calamansi juice c. Corn starch
