What I Need to Know
Describe the appearance of uniform (homogeneous) mixtures.

GUIDE CARD:

What Is it

What Are Homogeneous Mixtures?

The difference between uniform and non-uniform mixtures is the degree at
which the materials are mixed and the sameness of their composition throughout the
mixture.
Another word for a uniform mixture is a homogeneous mixture. Homogeneous
mixtures have the same composition throughout (home = the same). There is only one
phase (state of matter) observed in a uniform, homogeneous mixture. By definition,
solutions are uniform/homogeneous mixtures. Examples would be Kool-Aid, fruit punch,
salt water, vinegar, vodka, etc.

On the other hand, non-uniform mixtures are also called heterogeneous mixtures.
Heterogeneous mixtures are not the same throughout (hetero = different). Trail mixes
and salads are great examples of non-uniform, heterogeneous mixtures. Every handful
that is grabbed or bite that is taken is slightly different.

The properties of homogeneous mixtures are best defined on a scale somewhere

between the two. Scientists (and we) most often use the simple standard of the naked eye.
If a substance can be seen to contain two or more distinct components, it is considered
heterogeneous. If it appears to be just one uniform substance, it's homogeneous.
Examples of Homogenous Mixtures
Homogeneous mixtures are all around us. Let's examine the different types of
homogeneous mixtures we may encounter. One type of homogeneous mixture involves
solid substances being combined. An example of this type of mixture is steel, which is a
mixture of carbon and iron metal. These types of homogeneous mixtures involving
metals are often referred to as alloys. It is important to note that no matter what size the
piece of steel, you should always find the same ratio of carbon to iron in the composition,
even though you cannot see the specific molecules of carbon and iron.

Learning Competency: Describe the appearance and uses of uniform and non-uniform
mixtures. S6MT-1a-c-1

Objective: Describe the appearance of uniform (homogeneous) mixtures.

What I Know

Choose from correct word inside the parenthesis that will make the sentence correct.
Underline your answer. Do this in your notebook.
__________ 1. A mixture is formed by combining (single, two or more)
materials.
__________ 2. A homogeneous mixture appears (non-uniform, uniform)
regardless of where you sample it
__________ 3. (Heterogeneous, Homogeneous) mixtures appear uniform to the
eye.
__________ 4. There are (one, two) categories of mixtures.
__________ 5. Air is a (homogeneous, heterogeneous) mixture.

ACTIVITY CARD:
What’s In

Activity 1- Homogenous Mixture Lab

You will need:
 two clear cups
 water
 oil
 food coloring
To help students identify if the mixtures are homogenous or not, remember to ask
them if the liquids appear as one type or if they are two types mixed together.
Homogenous mixtures always look smooth and like only one liquid.

Procedure:
1. Fill both cups halfway with tap water.
2. In one cup, add a few drops of food coloring and gently stir it. Record any observations
in a data table like the one below, such as if the food coloring spreads out, what colors
you see, how it moves in the water, or anything else you notice! Decide if the mixture is
homogenous or not and also record this hypothesis in your data table.
3. In the second cup, add a few drops of oil. Again, record any observations and whether
the mixture is homogenous or not in your data table.

Answer the following questions. Write your answer in your notebook.

1. Which mixture was homogenous, and how did you know?

2. Why do you think one mixture was homogenous and the other was not?

3. What are some other examples of homogenous mixtures you can find in your
house?
ENRICHMENT CARD:

A. Put if the material is a homogeneous and if it is not. Write your

answer in your notebook.
