Isang Salaysay Tungkol sa mga Hayop na Biyak ang Kuko

Noong 1996, natamaan ng nakakasindak na balita ang Metro Manila. Ang mga baboy at baka
ay nagiging biktima ng sakit na foot and mouth. Ang sakit na foot and mouth ay isang malala at
nakakahawang sakit na viral ng baka at baboy. Nakakaapekto rin ito sa mga tupa, kambing,
usa, at iba bang mga hayop na biyak ang kuko. Katangian nito ang lagnat at mga lesyon na
mukhang blisters sa dila at labi, sa bibig, sa mga utong, at sa pagitan ng mga kuko. Gumagaling
ang mga hayop na apektado ngunit ang sakit ay nag-iiwan ng matinding panghihina. Nagiging
sanhi rin ito ng matinding kawalan sa produksiyon ng karne at gatas.

Dahil sa impormasyong ito, natakot bumili ang maraming tao ng karne ng baboy at iba pang
mga hayop na may biyak na kuko, katulad ng mga baka, kambing, at usa. Naapektohan ang
maraming tindero sa kalagayang ito. Napilitan silang ibenta ang kanilang mga produkto sa
mababang presyo. Ngunit kahit na binabaan na ang presyo, wala pa ring tiwalang bumili ng
mga produkto ang mga tao. Nabahala ang mga tao sa kanilang kalusugan at kaligtasan, hindi
malaman kung ang sakit na nakakahawa ay nagkaroon ng epekto sa mga tao. Sinubukang
hikayatin ng Kagawaran ng Kalusugan ang mga tao na huwag mabagabag dahil may mga pag-
aaral na nagpapakitang ang sakit na foot and mouth ay hindi nakaaapekto sa tao.

Gayunman, hindi pa rin bumibili ang mga tao ng karneng baboy at karne ng ibang
hayop na biyak ang kuko. Tumagal din bago muling bumili ng karne ang mga tao. Ang mga
rason kung bakit nagpalit ng isip ang mga tao ay dahil sa mga ginawang hakbang ng mga
apektadong bansa. Ang tiwala ng mamimili ay nanumbalik nang makita at malaman ng mga
tao kung paano hinarap ng mga apektadong bansa ang ganitong kalagayan. Ngayon, ang mga
pasilidades sa pagpapalaki ng baboy ay mas mahigpit kaysa dati. Nagpatupad sila ng mga
hakbang upang iwasan ang posibilidad na makakuha muli ang mga baka ng kinatatakutang
sakit.
