5 E's Model

Engage- the part that catches the student’s attention.

Explore- the activity that allows the students to be

hands on and investigate/problem solve.

Explain-this step is where the students analyze the data

and discuss their findings.

Elaborate-allows students to get a more in-depth

explanation.

Evaluate-allows the teacher to measure student

performance and how well they understood the steps of
the assignment, and more importantly if they
understand the concepts behind it all.

Resources
Week 1
Overview and lesson assessment

This week we will be focusing on the basic needs of animals and humans. As a class we will
discuss the basic needs of animals and humans, then compare the basic needs to see if they
are similar. We will also learn the difference between shelter and habitat. Students will
work in groups to match images of animal with their corresponding shelter and habitat.
Through class discussion, video exploration, and cooperative learning the children will be
able to understand and describe the basic needs of animals and humans, while also being
able to differentiate the terms shelter and habitat. The 5 E's teaching method will be
used through all of our learning.

Assessment at the end of lesson:

Students will be given a worksheet where they may pick an animal or a human to draw and
write a short story about. Students must identify the 4 basic needs, air, water, shelter and
food in their short story and drawing.

Vocab Terms:
Vocabulary terms for this week are: Need, Shelter
and Habitat.

All students will have these terms defined in their

journals. I encourage parents to review these terms
with their children!

Furthering our learning at home

If you have a pet at home discuss their basic needs

with your child(ren). Compare the pets needs with
your own basic needs.
If you do not have any pets discuss your own basic
needs and identify them at home.
Week 2
Overview and lesson assessment

This week students will learn to differentiate the physical characteristics of

animals and classify them based on those characteristics. We will begin this lesson
by observing the class fish! As a group will we come to a conclusion on how fishy is
able to live in water. This will lead us into our lesson of the 5 animals classifications
, which are their vocab terms for the week, and their characteristics. Activities
for this lesson include "swat the vocab term", this will help with memorization of
the vocab definitions, and creating anchor charts of each animal classification and
their characteristics. The children will do this in groups at their table. The 5 E's
teaching method will be used through all of our learning.

Assessment at the end of lesson:

Animals classification worksheet, this consists of matching and fill in the blank
questions.

Vocab Terms for this week

Amphibian, Mammal, Bird, Reptile, and Fish

students will have these terms defined in their

journals. I encourage parents to review these
terms with their children!

Furthering our learning at home

Parents, take your child(ren) on a walk

around the neighborhood and see what
animals you can find and classify.
Questions to ask: "How is that bird able to
fly?" or "What animal classification does that
frog belong in?", follow up, "How did you
come to that conclusion?"
