A prisoner of its own mind

Essay English
Khian F Ortega

With the rise of our population numerous problems arise with it. Multiple changes have taken
place within the world through generations of humanity one of these is our social environment. There
have been positive and negative effects regarding within. What happened? Well I’m here to tell you
about depression. How the numbers of people who have it grew. Especially now at the pandemic, I’m
here to inform you about how they are a prisoner of their own mind and to be aware of what they
feel.

Depression or Major Depressive Disorder is a common yet serious medical illness that
negatively effects how the person feels, if you ask other people what comes to their mind on the word
‘depression’ they’ll obviously answer, unhappiness, despair, sadness, and misery, well that’s all
correct but here’s the thing as what the example said some people think or thought that the people
who have depression is always sad or always wears hoodie or any clothes with long sleeves. Well
that’s not true some of them hides their pain in their smile even though they feel empty inside.

Depression is a feeling of being stuck in between, it’s a very complicated feeling that the
people who are diagnosed with it or feel it can’t understand themselves and just think that ending
their life will solve it all, you feel hopeless, like you’re stuck inside a cage and want to get out but at
the same time you don’t, an emotion of searching endlessly of light in a world full of darkness, it is a
feeling where everything is hard, being overwhelmed by everything, over thinking everything .
people who have depression know to themselves that they are not the only one who have problems,
that’s why they hide their pain with a smile.

They smile even though they want to cry. They want to reach out for help but are afraid
they’ll get judge, these people are afraid they’ll hear the words “you’re just over reacting” or “you
just want attention” …That’s why they hide instead of asking for help even though they know it’ll
just make thing harder for them. But how are they a prisoner of their own mind? You see if you’re
diagnosed with depression you’ll describe it as hearing voices in your head saying negative things
about you and pushing you to kill yourself, telling you “you’re not important just die, they won’t
even notice because they don’t care”,

but here’s a fact, the so called voices are them, it’s them saying that to themselves they
want to stop and escape yet at the same time they don’t, that’s why the cage that was mentioned
earlier and the title of this essay is like this is because the people that are diagnosed with depression
are a prisoner of their own mind
but what are the signs and symptoms of depression, if you notice one of your
love ones suddenly loses interest on things they really enjoy just suddenly turn quiet,
lack of expression, easily gets angry, agreeing to go out and then suddenly cancelling
it, poor performance at work or school, slowed thinking, speaking , or movement, poor
self care, unhealthy sleeping schedule, lack emotion, and obviously faking or forcing a
smile. Check up on them because they’re slowly losing their selves, in every 5 minutes
there is someone who commits suicide and half of the people who commits suicide is
because of depression, now how will you help them as a family member or as a friend?

Checking up on them wouldn’t hurt in fact it will actually help little by little
because it will be a reminder for them that there is someone who cares for them,
tell them they are important, tell them you care because if they hear those voices
again those words you say to them will help them fight those voices, Don’t force them
to tell you what’s wrong you’ll only panic them and if they don’t tell you then don’t get
angry instead wait for them till they’re ready to tell you and once they do tell them
everything’s going to be ok and comfort them, let them cry as much as they want to,

and if they want to be left alone leave them alone for a moment and come
back to comfort them and if they harm their selves stop them but not forcefully. Don’t
watch them 24/7 because they’ll feel suffocated and it won’t help at all, Don’t force
them to go for a therapist and wait till they are ready or if they tell you their self
take them out on activities or if they don’t want to go outside then hang out inside
their house. Help them feel confident, Show them that light that they are endlessly
trying to find, help them open that cage, help them escape that prison inside their
mind, help them defeat those voices.

Take them home. because once that depression is gone and defeated
they’ll be able to feel it, they’ll see that light getting bigger and bigger, they’ll feel warm
and once that happen tears will fall down uncontrollably and they’ll see that hope that
they lost.

Over the years we humans have turned into what we hated the most and now we
suffer the consequences of our actions. We need to take action, be responsible, return
the hopes and rights of people and together we will recreate the evolution of
humanity’s psychology. We need to make a move before it’s too late so will you stand
up to lend a hand?
