About Hattersley
The origins of Hattersley date to 1897,
when 20 year-old Richard Hattersley
started a small tool-making business
in Halifax. In the early 1900s he
relocated to Ormskirk, and in 1910 he
joined with three other engineering
companies, including Newman Hender
& Co. of Woodchester, to form United
Brassfounders & Engineers.
By 1937 Hattersley & Newman Hender both enjoyed
Richard Hattersley worldwide sales, with Hattersley exporting to some 73
countries. During the Second World War both companies
entered war production, making fuses for armaments,
brass rods for munitions factories and, of course, special
valves for military purposes. In 2004, Crane Limited
purchased the Hattersley valve brand and business from
Hattersley Newman Hender Limited, a subsidiary of
Tomkins plc.

In short, it is the key to providing a comfortable
indoor climate, or a steady supply of hot and cold
water.
Hattersley Future Flow range includes a variety
of dynamic balancing valves that use the latest
technology to maintain the required design flow
rate. In contrast to static balancing valves they
are pressure independent so that flow rates
remain constant, irrespective of any pressure
changes within the system.

Water is lazy and will take the shortest route!

This excess flow causes the temperature to

process continues to repeat itself in an event

Differential Pressure
Control Valves
To meet the growing use of variable speed pumps
for HVAC applications, Hattersley has launched
a range of Differential Pressure Control Valves
(DPCV) specifically aimed at optimising system
performance.
Extremely efficient, the DPCV is set to a maximum
differential pressure, which ensures flow cannot
exceed a desired rate. It therefore helps reduce
energy consumption, the risk of noise and simplifies
the commissioning process.

Differential Pressure Control Valves

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

01. Q. Can I measure flow rate?
A. No. Flow rate cannot be measured directly from the PICV. Other means of flow verification such as orifice plates/
flow measurement devices should be installed as part of the system. However, the flow rate can be established from
valve set position.

02. Q. What are the test points used for?

A. They are used to verify the pressure drop across the seat to check that the valve is operating at the correct
pressure drop. Please refer to the IOM.

03. Q. How do I know if the PICV is working correctly?

A. This can be verified by measuring the pressure drop across the seat using the test points and then comparing
against the detail provided in FAQ 2.

04. Q. Can I install the PICV upside down?

A. The PICV can be mounted in any orientation. However consideration needs to be given to choice of actuator.
Thermal actuators can be installed in any orientation, but Electro-Mechanical actuators should not be installed upside
down as this can allow moisture to enter the actuator. However, a PICV with an electro-mechanical actuator can be
orientated anywhere between 0-90° from the vertical.

05. Q. Can I install the PICV on flow or return?

A. The PICV can be installed on either flow or return. Please ensure that the valve is installed with the flow direction
arrow in the correct direction.

06. Q. Does it matter which way around the PICV is installed?

A. The PICV must be installed with the flow direction arrow in the correct direction.

07. Q. Can I flush through the PICV?

A. It is not recommended to flush through PICVs. The PICV is a control valve with close tolerance flow paths. Flushing
through these valves may introduce debris, which could block the flow paths.

08. Q. Are the valves able to isolate?

A. Control valves are not designed to be isolating valves, and it is always recommended to fit separate isolating
valves. However for routine maintenance purposes, i.e. strainer cleaning, the actuator can be removed, and a manual
cap fitted which can be used to close the valve.

09. Q. How do I commission using PICVs?

A. BSRIA Guide to Commissioning Water Systems BG2/ 2010 and CIBSE Commissioning Code W: 2010 give details
of commissioning procedures using PICVs.

HE SWITCH, for On-Off Applications

In this configuration, the control unit is designed
by the customer and located in a remote cabinet.
All information sent by the actuator sensors (travel
limit, torque limit, thermal overload and position
feedback) have to be processed by user’s control
logic. Power reversing starters are also housed in
the remote cabinet.
As far as travel limitation adjustment is concerned,
Hattersley patented camblock system allows to
quickly set the cams’ positions with a standard
flat head screwdriver. Each single cam can be HE Patented Camblock
set independently from the others. The cams are
automatically locked in their respective positions,
once adjusted, and unaffected by vibrations.
