Meeting Minutes

Present: Rachel, Ralph, Alaina, Michelle, Leslie

1. Updates

1.1 Welcome BBQ


• Ralph to obtain UVic Liability Insurance and fax to
Saanich Parks Department (475-5525)
• Alaina to obtain park use permit, buy food for barbecue
and send an e-mail to executive members regarding the
loan of a barbecue or transport for a barbecue
• Rob to e-mail all members informing them of Welcome
BBQ on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 5:00 p.m. in
Cadboro-Gyro Park

1.2 Website
• website layout was voted on by executive members
present
• Rachel is to e-mail Jeff and let him know of the decision

1.3 Letters to Deans and Faculty


• Letters to Deans and Faculty will be signed by Ralph
and Rachel and sent out by the end of this week

1.4 T-shirts/Lanyards
• Rachel and Michelle ordered 12 girls and 70 unisex
Golden Key T-shirts
• T-shirts will be available by Friday, September 3, 2004
• Rachel is to get the invoice for the T-shirts to Ralph
• the idea of Golden Key lanyards was looked into, but
was deemed unfeasible as it would cost a considerable
amount more than was budgeted for

1.5 GK Night at Felicita’s


• GK Night at Felicita’s has been confirmed for Friday,
September 17, 2004

• Rachel and Michelle are to discuss possible discounts
with manager

1.6 Workshops
• Rachel is to continue trying to contact Counselling
Services regarding Golden Key workshops
• workshops have been confirmed with Career Services
for dates selected at previous meeting
• no information regarding Dr. Ross yet – deferred to next
meeting
• Anne Couture has agreed to host two workshops on
stretching and relaxation

1.7 Make A Difference Day


• Rachel is to contact SFU again regarding their plans for
Make A Difference Day

1.8 Scholarships
• Jennifer Hargreaves is to provide Golden Key with
requested list of students
• Rachel, Alaina and Rob are to meet Wednesday,
September 1, 2004 to further discuss scholarship
program

2. Honorary Members

• Amalia Schelhorn has accepted offer to become a UVic


Golden Key Honorary Member
• Jan Zwicky
-award-winning poet, musician and philosopher
-interests: history of ideas, metaphilosophy, ancient
Greek philosophy, interdisciplinary work in the
Humanities
-currently teaches philosophy at UVic
• Angelika Arend
-numerous publications; directs a German choir at
UVic
-interests: lyric poetry, early 19th century literature,
literature and music, German-Canadian literature,
Gottfried Benn, Walter Bauer
-currently teaches Germanic and Russian studies at
Uvic
• Alex Campbell

- president and co-founder of Thrifty Foods
-received honorary doctorate of laws from Royal
Roads University in 200, has been awarded the Order
of B.C. and is the recipient of numerous community
and industry awards
-member of the Board of Advisors, UVic Faculty of
Business
• Dr. Rae
- Leslie to obtain information for next meeting
• Naz Rayani
- will be used as an alternate Honorary Member if
needed
• Ed Bain
-Alaina is to contact Nola regarding status of Ed Bain

3. Campus Awareness

• Sign-up sheets for information tables were sent around;


Rachel is to e-mail sign-up sheets to executive members
following meeting
• Subcommittee for promotion at information tables was
formed; Rachel, Leslie, Alaina and Amanda are to meet
Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. at
CORA150 to create signs/posters for information tables
• Advertising Golden Key events should be accomplished
via:
-website
-Yahoo group (calendar)
-idea suggested of an executive position: “creative
director” – to be discussed at next meeting
• idea suggested of Golden Key Information Night – to be
discussed at next meeting

4. Tutoring Program

6. Fundraising

6.1 Chocolates
• 2 products are available:
-90g box of Belgian chocolate caramels selling at $3
each, our cost is $1.75 per box
-90g box of Belgian chocolate mints selling at $3
each, our cost is $1.75 per box
• boxes come packed 60 per case; free shipping on order
of 12 cases or more - free personalisation on each box
with Golden Key logo and group’s particulars
• Michelle to look into local options; she is to contact
Purdy’s Chocolates and Roger’s Chocolates (Kate
Phoenix)
