–4–
Recording
For all individual measuring functions, one can use RE-
CORDING from the menu under ••• on the measuring
technique screen to record a stated number of measure-
ments at stated intervals, or measure for a stated number
of minutes. The field (A) toggles between ‘measurements’ A
and ‘minutes’.

To set up a consecutive recording of a shock pulse measure-

ment, a vibration measurement plus either a speed or ana-
log measurement (or any combination of these), one needs
a measuring point where all wanted techniques are active.
This point must be downloaded from Condmaster.

After defining the number of measurements and the time

interval, use the keys NEW or EDIT (B) to put the measuring
technique on the list under ‘Measuring sequence’. Connect
the transducer and use MEASURE to start. B
The results can be seen on the graphics display.

FILE menu
The file menu contains two standard files, ‘Read Con-
dID’ (used when loading measuring points from CondID
memory tags) and ‘Communication’ (for data transfer
from and to the PC).

Measuring rounds downloaded from the PC will appear

as files on the FILE menu. These files are retained (un-
less erased with DELETE) after uploading, and overwrit-
ten when the round is downloaded again from the PC.

When one of the measurement and balancing functions

is used, the result can be saved as a user named file
which can be opened from this menu.

File location is, by default, Leonova’s FLASH memory.

One can save to RAM instead. If the battery goes down
completely, the files in RAM will be erased. Use ‘File
location’ to transfer files between RAM and FLASH
memory.

–5–
Shock pulses – dBm/dBc

The dBm/dBc technique returns the maximum value dBm

and the carpet value dBc. The measuring unit is dBn
(decibel normalized) when shaft diameter and r.p.m. are
input as basic data.

Calculates the shaft diameter

from the last two digits of the A B
ISO bearing number. Set with
UP/DOWN.

TLT active (A) displays the TLT number (transducer line

quality). Spectrum active (B) calculates an SPM spectrum if
this function is activated under the measuring point data.

The peak light (C) blinks when

the measured peak value is
higher than the dBm. With
UP/DOWN (D) the dBm value
can be adjusted. When the
blinking stops, the measuring
result shows the peak value,
C plus the original maximum
value dBm in brackets.
D

Shock pulses – LR/HR

The LR/HR technique returns two absolute shock values (LR
and HR) measured in dBsv (decibel shock value) as well as
three condition codes (CODE no., LUB no. and COND no.).
The latter require an input of the SPM TYPE no., mean bear-
ing diameter and r.p.m. as basic data.

Calculates the mean bearing diam-

eter from the last three digits of A B
the ISO bearing number. Set with
UP/DOWN and Right/LEFT.

TLT active (A) displays the TLT number (transducer line qual-
ity).

Spectrum active (B) calculates an SPM spectrum if this func-

tion is activated under the measuring point data.

–6–
SPM Spectrum
An SPM Spectrum can be produced using either dBm/
dBc or LR/HR technique, by setting SPM Spectrum to
YES under ‘Measuring point data’.

This opens a list of basic data where the spectrum prop-

erties can be defined (mark the line and open EDIT).

Please note that one cannot define symptoms which

highlight the bearing frequencies by setting up the SPM
Spectrum on Leonova. For symptoms, the spectrum must
be configured in Condmaster.

One unit for amplitude in an SPM spectrum is SD (Shock

Distribution unit), where each spectrum is scaled so that
the total RMS value of all spectrum lines = 100 SD = the
RMS value of the time record. The alternative is SL (Shock
Level unit), the RMS value of the frequency component
in decibel. Zoom in on the X-axis by drawing the stylus
over a section.

Choices under A:
Zoom back (last step)
Zoom back all
Show harmonics (works when a spectrum line is marked)
Clear all (unmarks lines)
Spectrum type (spectrum, phase spectrum, time signal)
Settings (logarithmic X, Y; list of measuring results; show
theoretical symptoms).
A
The selected frequency range is overruled when the func-
tion ‘True zoom’ is activated by setting a zoom centre
frequency and a zoom factor. In this case, the spectrum
will only show a range around the centre frequency that
is covered by 6400 lines at the selected magnification.

Read more under ‘Spectrum functions’.

–7–
Speed measurement
Speed is either measured with the SPM tachometer probe
or with a proximity switch connected via the balancing box.
Manual input is accepted (open A).

The measuring unit can be changed to e.g. meter per A

minute under ‘Measuring point data’.

Please note:
All default measurement files can be edited. If you want
the default file to open with your own input data, use
‘Save as new default settings’ when closing the file.

VIB ISO 2372

Vibration measurement according to ISO 2372 returns

the r.m.s. value of vibration velocity over the range of
10 to 1000 Hz. The measurement unit is mm/s.

Select the measuring direction: horizontal, vertical, or

axial.

When a machine class, 1 to 6, is selected, the result will

be evaluated green - yellow - red according to the ISO
limit values.

Please make sure that the vibration transducer is cor-

rectly selected.

–8–
VIB ISO 10816
Vibration measurement according to ISO 10816 can
return the r.m.s. value of vibration velocity (mm/s),
acceleration (m/s2) or displacement (µm), also peak
values, depending on the selected machine classifica-
tion. The measuring range is 2 to 1000 Hz (default)
or user selected. A 1600 line linear FFT spectrum
over the selected frequency range is automatically
produced. Spectrum parameters cannot be edited.

Depending on the part of the standard and the

machine group, ISO 10816 gives limit values for
displacement (DISP) and either velocity (VEL) or ac-
celeration (ACC). Leonova automatically adjusts the
measurement quantity display to the selected part
and group. The result is evaluated green - yellow
- red according to the ISO limit values. Touching the
bar with the machine class information (circle) will
display the corresponding ISO limit value table.

ISO 10816 Part 6 describes machines where condi-

tion evaluation should be based on the measurement
quantity returning the highest overall r.m.s. values.
All three quantities are displayed.

Please make sure that the vibration transducer is

correctly selected.

Read more under ‘Spectrum functions’.

Set comment

For all measuring functions, one can set a comment which

is saved together with the measuring result. ‘Comment’ is
on the menu under •••. One can also tap and hold on the
comment line in ‘Graphics’.

The present date/time is input by default. When ‘To date/

time’ is input, the comment square in ‘Graphics will ex- A
pand horizontally and mark the period. Example: Machine
stopped from 2005-11-25 to 2005-11-28.

Select a comment from the list (A), then input free text if
desired. Save with OK.

–9–
EVAM or FFT assignment
Vibration measurement according to the EVAM method
returns 12 vibration parameters and an FFT spectrum.
The r.m.s. values for displacement (DISP), velocity
(VEL) and acceleration (ACC) are displayed in the result
window. To see the other parameters, select ‘Measuring
results’ before saving the measurement.

Please note: To be comparable, condition parameters

should always be measured over the frequency range up
to 1000 Hz. The lower frequency range must be within
the transducer’s lower frequency range (which is reduced
when the transducer is not firmly attached to the measur-
ing point).

An evaluation in green - yellow - red and the use of

symptoms is only possible for measuring points down-
loaded from Condmaster.

Peak and peak to peak values are displayed for the

‘signal unit’.

With ‘Measuring point data’ one can edit the measuring

parameters. The transducer setting ‘Portable’ selects the
default transducer. ‘Signal unit’ is the unit for the time
signal, while ‘Spectrum unit’ is the measuring unit for the
spectrum (e. g. VEL for a velocity spectrum).

The ‘FFT type’ normally used is a linear spectrum. In a

power or power density spectrum the high amplitude
lines are enhanced, which is not always favourable for
pattern recognition.

The selected frequency range is overruled when the func-

tion ‘True zoom’ is activated by setting a zoom centre
frequency and a zoom factor. In this case, the spectrum
will only show a range around the centre frequency that
is covered by 6400 lines at the selected magnification.

‘Enveloping filter, Hz’ sets the high pass frequency for

enveloping (all vibration below that frequency is filtered
out).

Read more under ‘Live spectrum’ and ‘Spectrum func-

tions’.

– 10 –
Orbit analysis
The measurements are normally made on the buffered
outputs of a machine protection system via the Orbit
Interface 15315. The interface is connected to the
vibration and the tachometer inputs on Leonova. Signal
inputs, channel X, channel Y and tachometer are con- C
nected via BNC connectors. B

Measurements can also be made with e. g. acceler-

ometers to get a two dimensional graph of mahine
movement. Required are two channel simultaneous
vibration measurement and two transducers placed at
an angle of 90° to each other, plus a trigger signal from
a tachometer probe.

By pressing the button (B) it is possible to see the

displacement of the X and Y values when the machine
is not rotating. This function is used to measure the
displacement when adjusting the proximity probes.
A
Select and open an Orbit assignment under the vibra-
tion flap. Set the Measuring point data under ‘. . .’ (A).
Settings include transducer type, signal unit and filter
type, either bandpass (default) or lowpass. Orders is
set to 1 by default, but can as high as 5 orders. The
number of revolutions parameter, max. 25, specifies
the number of shaft revolutions to acquire and display
in the orbit graph.

During measurement, the orbit graph shows displace-

ment in the x and y direction per revolution. When the
measurement is complete, the average of the mea-
sured values is shown (C).

The orbit graph shows an overlay of the graphs for D F

each measured revolution plus their average. You can
select each individual revolution as well as the average
of all revolutions (D).

Select the graph, marked dark blue, in the window (D).

With the button (F) you can activate an arrow showing
the angle and the peak value at that angle. You can
move the arrow with tap and drag.
E
When the orbit assignment is set up in Condmaster
Nova, alarm limits can be set on the X and Y axis,
resulting in an evaluated measurement (green - yellow-
red scale).

– 11 –
2 channel vibration monitoring
Measurement requires the set-up of two vibration
assignments with identical parameters. The 2 chan-
nel measuring cable CAB51 is used to connect both
transducers to the Leonova vibration transducer
input.

The procedure is the same as for the corresponding

A
measurement with a single transducer.

After measurement, Leonova displays the RMS values

for DIP, VEL and ACC for both channels. Mark one
of these results to get the corresponding measuring
result diagram or spectrum.

In the spectrum window, three graphs are available

under ‘...’ (A):
• Spectrum
• Phase spectrum
• Time signal
In the spectrum and the time signal, the channels are
overlayed red and blue. C

Tap and hold to produce the blue marker (B). For the B
marker position in the spectra, the frequency is dis-
played, plus vibration amplitudes for both channels
and the phase angle between them (C).

Move the cursor with the right/left arrow keys.

Time record functions are described on page 18. With

an overlay of both channels, the phase angle at any
moment during the sampling time is clearly shown.

– 12 –
Run up / Coast down
To make either a ‘Run up’ (from machine start to work-
ing speed) or a ‘Cost down’ (from working speed to
stop) measurement, select the vibration menu and then
the function ‘Run up/Cost down. Follow the guide.

‘Signal unit’ is what the transducer measures (ACC for

accelerometers), while ‘Spectrum unit’ is the measuring
unit for the spectrum (e. g. VEL for a velocity spectrum).
The upper frequency i set in orders (default 10, max.
9999) .

For an RPM based measuring interval, set interval in

RPM, for time based, in seconds. RPM for ‘Run up’ is
low to high, for ‘Cost down’ it is high to low.

Connect vibration transducer and tachometer. Press

MEASURE. The measurement list shows number of
reading, time, RPM, RMS value and phase angle. A

The spectrum (A) shows the marked reading in front.

Tap and hold to produce the blue marker.

The phase angle graph (B) shows all readings as dots

grouped 360 dedrees around the centre. Tab a dot to
mark the reading.

The result graph (C) shows the RMS value (upper) and
the phase angle (lower) against an RPM scale. Tab a dot
to mark the reading.

The measurement can be saved under a file name.

A B C

B C

– 13 –
Bump test
To make a bump test on a stationary machine, select
the vibration menu and then the function ‘Bump test’.
Follow the guide.

During a bump test, Leonova measures continuously.

A reading is saved when you hit the machine with e.g.
a rubber mallet and the resulting vibration is within
the set parameters.

The sampling time is automatically calculated from

the frequency range and the number of spectrum
lines. ‘Pre-trig’ sets the time before the trigger level
is reached, in percent of the measuring time.
The vibration during pre-trig time is included in the
sample.

The referential measurement is used to find the right

trigger level. Hit the machine. The green staple shows
the peak vibration level (blue arrow). The green arrow
shows the trigger level. Adjust the force of the hits if
needed, or press CLEAR and repeat. Press ‘Continue’
to go to the measurement window.

In the measurement window, press the button ‘Arm

Trigger’ to activate the measuring function. A

Hit with the same force as during the referential mea-

surement. The result is a spectrum and a time signal.
Tap and hold to produce the blue marker (A).

The measurement can be saved under a file name.

– 14 –
Graphics functions
Up to 100 measurements can be downloaded with a
measuring point from Condmaster. These are shown un-
der ‘Graphics’, as well as all measurements saved during
the present measuring session.

The measurement parameter to be shown in the diagram

is selected by marking it under ‘Measuring results’ before
opening ‘Graphics’.

Menu selected functions under ••• are:

Zoom back (one step).
Zoom back all (to the original diagram).
Measuring protocol (even spacing of the measurements,
regardless of the time intervals).
Autoscale Y-axis (scale adjusted so that the diagram can
show all measurements).

Tap and hold (stylus kept in place until the function

opens) or dragging with the stylus opens more functions:
To zoom in, drag the stylus horizontally over a part of the
diagram.

To move the scale up or down, drag the stylus vertically

over the right or left scale.

To see the measuring result and date/time, tap and hold

on a result dot.

To read the comment text, tap and hold on a comment

square. To set a comment, tap and hold on the comment
field below the diagram, marked A in the figure.

To put cross hairs into the diagram, drag the stylus from A
the outside into the diagram. The date and the scale val-
ue at the centre position of the crosshairs are displayed.

Live spectrum
If ‘Preview live spectrum’ is
selected in ‘General settings’ a
200 lines spectrum will be shown
and continuously updated. When
pressing ‘Measure’ the pre-set
assignment will be performed.
Temporary settings can be made
if the arrow button (B) is pressed.
Changes of resolution etc. can be
done with arrow keys (C).

– 15 –
Spectrum functions
The spectrum is available after measuring and before
saving, or by calling up any stored measurement for
the active measuring point. Note that all input data (A)
defining the spectrum must be input before measuring.

A vibration spectrum shows line amplitudes in the

selected ‘spectrum unit’.

Menu selected functions under (B) are:

Zoom back: undo last zoom step. B
Zoom back all: show original spectrum.
Show harmonics: marks and numbers all multiples (=
orders) of the marker position.
Clear all: removes marker and other indicators.
Settings: opens a menu (C) where one can set loga-
rithmic scales and select the measurement for which A
the spectrum is to be shown. When available, one can
select a symptom to be highlighted in the spectrum.
‘Theoretical symptom’ marks the symptom’s spectrum
line or lines with vertical lines ending in circles that
show their amplitudes.

Pointing/dragging with the stylus opens more func-

tions:
To zoom in on a frequency range, drag the stylus
horizontally over a part of the diagram. To zoom in on
a part of the amplitude scale, drag the stylus vertically
over a part of the diagram.
To put a marker into the spectrum, point with the Marker
stylus and keep it on the screen (‘tap and hold’) until Cross hairs
a vertical arrow appears. The arrow can be moved
sideways with RIGHT/LEFT, and it can also be dragged
with the stylus. At each step, the frequency and am-
plitude of the spectrum line beneath the marker are
briefly displayed. When the arrow coincides with a line
belonging to the selected symptom, the name of the
symptom is displayed.

To put cross hairs into the spectrum, B

drag the stylus from the outside into C
the diagram. The centre position of
the crosshairs is displayed.

Spectrum functions, SPM

An SPM spectrum is similar to a vibration spectrum, except
that the original signal comes from a shock pulse trans-
ducer.

The symptoms to look for are the frequencies of the

rolling bearing elements, where high amplitudes indicate
faults on the inner or outer race, the rolling elements, etc..
Measuring points with symptoms can be downloaded from
Condmaster.
One unit for amplitude in an SPM spectrum is SD (Shock
Distribution unit), where each spectrum is scaled so that
the total RMS value of all spectrum lines = 100 SD = the
RMS value of the time record. The alternative is SL (Shock
Level unit), the RMS value of the frequency component in
decibel.

– 17 –
Time record
For measurements made with the files under the
vibration menu one can save the time record in
Leonova. It can not be downloaded to Condmaster.
A
The measuring unit is always the signal unit, i. e. by
default the transducer output.

The diagram is scaled peak to peak (Y-axis) and shows

the total sample time (X-axis).

Menu selected functions under (A) are:

Zoom back: undo last zoom step.

time record if available. B

Pointing/dragging with the stylus opens more func-

tions:
To zoom in on a time range, drag the stylus horizon-
tally over a part of the diagram. To zoom in on a part
of the amplitude scale, drag the stylus vertically over
a part of the diagram.

To put a marker into the spectrum, point with the

stylus and keep it on the screen (tap and hold) until a
vertical arrow appears. The arrow can be moved side-
ways with RIGHT/LEFT, and it can also be dragged
with the stylus. At each step, the time and amplitude
of the spot beneath the marker are briefly displayed.

A period is selected by placing a second marker. Hold

down SHIFT, then tap and hold in the second marker
position. The period is shown in Hertz (B), together
with the position of the first marker. RIGHT/LEFT
moves the first marker. SHIFT + RIGHT/LEFT moves
the second marker. To mark a different period, use
CLEAR ALL and start again.

– 18 –
Balancing
Leonova contains three balancing programs:
Single plane, 4 runs
Single plane, 2 runs
Dual plane balancing.

‘Single plane, 4 runs’ can be used without r.p.m.

measurement. The ‘2 run’ methods require time
synchronous measurements of the r.p.m. (average of
5 measurements).

In all three cases, the result is the position and weight

of the balancing weight(s) needed to counteract the
unbalance of the rotor.

The balancing programs open consecutive windows

that guide the user through the procedure. Use the
arrow keys to move forward or backward.

The keys shown below open calculation functions:

Check the result of 4 run balancing.

Place balancing weight on two rotor partitions.

Calculate radial position for fixed balancing weight.
Move balancing weight radially.
A
Remove weight by drilling.
Functions under A:
Turn angle into length of arc.
• Shift rotation direction
Sum up several balancing weights. • Select output unit (VEL, ACC or
DISP)
Calculate drilling depth.

– 19 –
Shaft alignment
Shaft Alignment is an optional LeonovaTM function,
supported by Leonova MMI software version 3.00
or higher, with either limited or unlimited use. In
case of limited use, 30 credits are deducted for
each alignment assignment.

Leonova contains two standard alignment assign-

ments, one for horizontal with softfoot measure-
ment and compensation for thermal growth and
one for vertical machines.

An alignment assignment can be saved as a user

file with all data, to be used again for similar
machines.

Special for the Leonova alignment kit are the

LineLazer detector/transmitter units that measure
the shaft position. They have position detectors
(PSDs) with a large, vertical reception area receiv-
ing a horizontally spread laser beam, which makes
fine tuning unnecessary. Integrated precision
inclinometers measure the angle of rotation of
both detector units at all times. This allows meas-
urement in fully automatic mode, with much less
than a half-turn of the shaft. Measurement results
are displayed in 100ths of millimetres or 1000ths
of an inch. One cable is eliminated due to wireless
communication between the master and the slave 1
detector. Only the master detector is connected
to Leonova.

Open the ‘Data window’ (1) and input the distances 3

for the M machine, using the number pad. Go to
the ‘Measurement window’ (2). At the top, it shows
the detector inclination (3) and their measured
values. The positions of saved measurements will
be marked on the graph (4) below. You can erase a
measurement by clicking on its position and then 5
click on ‘Delete’ (5).

In ‘Automatic mode’, the measuring starts automati- 4

cally when the detectors are in position. Hold the
shaft steady until the measurement is saved, shown
by a dot in the graph. Then turn the shaft more than
5 degrees to the next position and hold it steady
until the next measurement is saved.

Shaft alignment
The ‘Result window’ (1) shows the vertical and
horizontal position of the machine, as reveiled by the
measurements.

Coupling symbols show the directions of vertical

offset , vertical angularity , horizontal offset and
horizontal angularity.

Lock symbols (2) indicate the two pairs of feet which

are not moved.

The ‘Alignment window’ (3) is live, so the position

values change as you shims and move the machine.

Under ‘Settings’ on the menu (4) and ‘View adjust-

ment’ you can select ‘Lines’ (5) instead of ‘Graphics’,
which is the default setting.

When closing, you can save the alignment file under a

suitable name an use it again for the alignment of this
or similar machines. For this, open the saved file, go
to the ‘Measurement window’, open the menu under
(4) and select ‘Delete’ to erase the old measured
values.

You can create an alignment report by connecting 3

the Leonova to the PC. Open the Leonova Service 4
Program and select ‘Print alignment report’.

Leonova service program

The Leonova Service Program is used to

• Print/save balancing and alignment reports.
• Load credits and/or functions from the file
‘Leonova.txt’. This file is coded to fit the in-
dividual instrument and ordered via the local
SPM distributor.
• Upgrade a Leonova version from the file
‘P70.EXE’.
• Display and print a credit log containing
all measurements for which credits were
deducted, up to 10000.
• Make and reload safety copies of the Le-
onova files (file extension .lsc).
• Upgrade FPGA software (for the Leonova
screen) from a file called FPGA.P70.

The file ‘Leonova.txt’ is coded to the in-

strument’s license number and can contain
credits and/or new functions

A credit log file shows all actions concerning

‘Function and use’.
