1.0 Company Background
Established in 1974, Sunway Group is one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates with 12
business divisions that operate across 50 locations worldwide. Their core interests are
focused on real estate, construction, education, healthcare, retail and hospitality. Powered by
our 16,000 strong team, they are committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) and continue to align our business strategies to meet the needs of
our communities in line with the SDG agenda.

Sunway’s unique Build-Own-Operate business model makes them an integral stakeholder of

the communities in which they operates, particularly the sustainable townships of Sunway
City Kuala Lumpur, Sunway City Ipoh in Perak and Sunway City Iskandar in Johor, and a
host of other integrated developments which collectively span more than 5,000 acres across
Malaysia.

Their three public-listed companies — Sunway Berhad, Sunway Construction Group, and
Sunway REIT, with a combined market capitalisation of RM 17 billion — form a real-estate
value chain that exemplifies socially responsible business practices, evidenced by their listing
on the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index. Underscoring Sunway Group’s long-standing
commitment to the sustainability agenda, founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO
through his eponymous Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), endowed US$10 million to the
United Nations to set up the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development at Sunway
University in 2016 to promote the sustainable development agenda in this part of the world.
The center is led by world renowned economist and special adviser to the UN Secretary
General, Professor Jeffrey Sachs; and serves as a hub for education and advancement of
sustainability across Southeast Asia. JCF also provides disadvantaged and deserving young
adults access to quality education and has disbursed more than RM482 million in
scholarships and growing.

Their commitment to strong Economic, Environment and Social practices is embedded

throughout the organisation – from our policies and our social impact initiatives to day-to-day
operations so that we deliver enduring growth for thriving communities.

4.0 COMPETITIVE AVANTAGE
4.1 MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE IN
CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
The fragmentation of the construction process, augmented specialization and involvement of
many interested parties calls for a shared format of creating, converting and exchanging
knowledge. Employees in charge of work at the sites and others engaged in the practicalities
of construction projects need sufficient knowledge to carry out their work properly.
Employees at all levels need to continuously update their working knowledge to keep abreast
of the latest technologies.

“When new methods and materials are developed, new knowledge is needed. As such,
employees should be provided with relevant information and be motivated to learn and
generate such knowledge themselves. Workers in a construction company need a deep
knowledge,” emphasized Kwan. Realizing this, Sunway Construction has always believed
and invested in technology, especially in the area of information and communication
technology (ICT). At this juncture, Sunway Construction is a pioneer among its peers when it
comes to adopting computerized systems in its business. From its inception, the company has
implemented basic computing facilities that have since evolved into client-server computing
with an enterprise-based system. Example of the systems includes ERP, Lotus Notes,
intranet, and e-Document Management System (eDMS).

8
4.2 INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY, PROCESSES AND PEOPLE FOR
EXCELLENT RESULTS

Having proper documentation and control of what is actually done on the construction site
and of how it is done is fundamental in the construction industry. Equally, no matter how
talented and motivated people are, a company cannot gain competitive advantage with faulty
processes. Flaws and errors in construction work can account for significant total production
costs. Substantial working time needs to be spent on correcting errors and reworking what
has

been done or planned. “Project management means you need to manage your project within
cost, time, quality, and safety parameters. Technology has definitely transformed our
processes through making them faster, efficient and productive,” said Kwan. He added that
through the utilization of technology, reports on the procurement processes, tender
management process, corrective action request process and monthly progress can be
generated in real time.

9
5.0 CURRENT ENVIRONMENT
Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon) has secured three projects worth a total of
RM496.8 million. On the latest jobs it landed, SunCon said the first was from Petronas
Management Training Sdn Bhd for the construction and completion of the Petronas
Leadership Centre in Bangi with works amounting to RM310 million.

It said the second project award is from Sunway South Quay for a contract sum of RM119
million for the earthworks, bored pile foundation with secant pile and diaphragm retaining
wall works in Sunway South Quay at Sunway City Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, the third job is from Oxley Rising Sdn Bhd for the supply, delivery, installation,
testing and commissioning of the electrical and mechanical and electrical extra-low voltage
system for its proposed mixed commercial development consisting of service suites, hotels,
and an office block in Jalan Ampang for a total contract sum of RM67.8 million.

SunCon group managing director Chung Soo Kiong said the group was pleased to have met
its 2019 target well ahead of the end of the year.

10
6.0 HOW THEY SUSTAIN THEIR COMPETITIVE

1. Strengthening Economic Integrity

The construction industry plays an important role to boost the economic development of
Malaysia. As a construction firm that continues to show good growth, SunCon is a major

2. Managing Our Environmental Impacts

physical environment as long as the industry demands natural resources. To overcome this
challenge, we include several key practices that are targeted to reduce our impact on the
surrounding environment in the long run.

3. Ensuring Safe & Quality Construction
