This is a fun, flirty dance that grew out of the Cuban Mambo and became
immensely popular in the United States in the 1950’s. It consists of triple chasse steps
(cha cha cha’s) and rock steps. It has a modified Cuban Motion hip action, because of
the speed. This is an exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put smile on
your face.
Cha- cha originated in Cuba and involved from a slow version of mambo called
triple mambo or mambo with guiro rhythm. This musical rhythm inspired dancers to
dance a hip syncopation to the forward and back breaks of a mambo which late
involved to a triple step. Cha- cha was introduced to the US in 1954 which replace
mambo as the latest dance craze. After it’s introduced to the US, the traditional violins
and flutes where exchange with big band instruments such as trumpets, trombones and
saxophones.

Basic Steps

Cha-cha music is composed in 4/4 time (four beats to a bar of music). For each
bar of music there are 2 slows and 3 quick steps, which may be counted as- one, two,
cha, cha, cha, or step, step, step, quick step, quick step. The footwork is simple and
mostly focuses on just shifting weight from one foot to another. Remember, five steps
are taken to four beats of music. Also don’t forget that the movements tend to be
somewhat flirtatious. This is definitely a party dance. Partners face each other.

2. SWING

It is one of the most versatile partner dances you can learn very social and
beginner friendly. Easily adaptable to a wide range of tempos, it involves movements
with lots of swinging, spinning and rhythmic, creative footwork .There are many different
style of swing, the term actually refers to a group of dances that developed from the
swing style of jazz music in the first haft of the last century. There`s Lindy Hop, Boogie-
Woogie, Jitterbug, Shag, Charleston, West Coast Swing, just to name a few.
Each of these dances has its own distinct flavor. One of the most popular and
very suitable for beginners is the East Coast Swing. It`s a bit more social and relaxed
than other versions. It`s also a formal ballroom dance and the easiest to learn. Perfects
for beginners, which is why we`ll focus in this version here. It will create a good
foundation and is the base for other more complex versions. East Coast Swing can be
danced to a variety of music styles. If it`s written in 4/4 time and has a tempo between
135-170 beats per minute, you can swing it.
To dance swing you`ll need a partner, a sense of humor, and a bit of endurance.
It may seem a bit intimidating at first, especially if you`re watching those who really
mastered it. But as with all things, you have to start with the basics. And the basics are
easily. Once you learn the fundamental, you`ll be swinging in no time. Always
remember, wear comfortable shoes.

3.Balse/Waltz

Balse was popular dance in Marikina, Rizal during the Spanish times? Balse
(valse in Spanish) means waltz. This dance was performed after the lutrina (a religious
procession) and the music that that accompanied the dancer s was played by the
musikong bungbong (musicians using instruments made of bamboo.
-Waltz, (from German walzen, “to revolve”), highly popular ballroom
dance evolved from the Ländler in the 18th century. Characterized by a step, slide, and
step in 3/4 time, the waltz, with its turning, embracing couples, at first shocked polite
society. It became the ballroom dance par excellence of the 19th century, however, and
tenaciously maintained its popularity in the 20th. Its variations include the rapid, whirling
Viennese waltz and the gliding, dipping Boston.

The Waltz is a smooth dance that travels around the line of dance. Characterized
by its "rise and fall" action, the Waltz includes a step, slide, and step in 3/4
time. Dancers should move their shoulders smoothly, parallel with the floor instead of up
and down, and they must strive to lengthen each step. On the first beat of the music, a
step is taken forward on the heel, then onto the ball of the foot with a gradual rise to the
toes, continuing on to the second and third beats of the music. At the end of the third
beat, the heel is lowered to the floor to the starting position.

The romantic Waltz is one of the most popular ballroom dances of all time.

Considered by some as the "mother of present day dances" and the "backbone dance"
of the ballroom dancing arena, the Waltz is the basis for many dances. A truly romantic
dance, the Waltz is comprised of soft, round, flowing movements

The count begins with the rock step (left foot step back, right foot in place), followed by
the two triple steps (chases) that are counted; 3-a-4, 5-a-6.
The rock step is simply changing weight from one foot to the other, except that is taking

5.TANGO

The tango is a sensual ballroom dance that originated in Buenos Aires,

Argentina in the early twentieth century. The tango dance is usually performed by a man
and a woman, expressing an element of romance in their synchronized movements.
Originally, the tango was performed only by women, but once it spread beyond Buenos
Aires, it developed into a dance for couples.

Tango is danced to a repetitive style of music, with the count of the music being
either 16 or 32 beats. While dancing the tango, the woman is typically held in the crook
of the man’s arm. She holds her head back and rests her right hand on the man's lower
hip, and the man must allow the woman to rest in this position while leading her around
the floor in a curving pattern. Tango dancers must strive to make a strong connection
with the music as well as their audience in order for it to be successful.

Argentine Tango is much more intimate than Modern Tango and is well-suited
to dancing in small settings. Argentine Tango also retains the intimacy of the original
dance. Several other different styles of tango exist, each with its own individual flair.
Most of the styles danced include open embrace, with the couple having space between
their bodies, or in a close embrace, where the couple is closely connected at either the
chest or the hip area. Many people are familiar with "ballroom tango," characterized by
strong, dramatic head snaps.

cultural group. Under this definition even the polka, which is considered a

Europe.

present characteristics of elements of local cultures. This term has come to be
closely associated Locsin works that fuse ballet, jazz and modern dance with
gestures from cultural enhance all over the country.
Lineage “Neo-ethnic” was minted in the course of working on a musical
entitled sinalimba.

linguistically way. It had rock music and trance gongs, earth rooted movements
and balletic leaps. It had a magic boat that took “tribal heroes” up to the sky.
For lack of anything more appropriate to put in the shows poster, Sinalimba
came to be promoted as “neo-ethnic musical.”

JUST A WORD

Neo-ethnic dance is just a word that points to an aspect of reality that we

as people and species have a collective past of many dimensions and colors
and that we are here, now in present time and place, which turns even as we
speak into the past as the future emerges unnoticed by most, like a fine
morning dew.
FREEZE-FRAMING

Art as well as other human endeavors not classified as such freeze

frames this passage of life and space-time, this blooming and willing cycle it
energy and form. In all that we do we crystalize past, present and future.
The neo-ethnic freeze frame occurs at the point where “contemporary”
global-urban westernized-modified market economy art and artists meet their
“traditional” counterpart’s art artists from clearly rooted local cultures.
