What is Dance?
Is a performing art form consisting of
purposefully selected sequences of human
movement. This movement has aesthetics and
symbolic value, and its acknowledged as dance by
performers and observers within a particular.
Dance can be categorized and described by its
choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or
by its historical period or place of origin.
Types of Dances:

History of Ballroom Dancing
The term ballroom dancing is derived from
the word “ball” which in turn originates
from the Latin word “ballare” which means
“to dance” (a ball-room being a large room
specially designed for such dances.)
In times past, ballroom dancing was social
dancing for the priviliged, leaving folk
dances for the lower classes.
Types of Ballroom Dancing
There are many different types of ballroom dancing, with the main two
being Smooth style and Latin/Rhythm style.

1.Standard/ Smooth Style


The smooth style dances are performed with the couple
dancing over the entire dance floor. This type of dancing
includes the:
Quickstep
Viennese Waltz
Tango
 Waltz
 Foxtrot
Quickstep
the quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the
standard ballroom dances. The movement of
the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and
sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat
melodies that quickstep is danced to make it
suitable for both formal and informal events.

Viennese Waltz
The Viennese waltz is a dance
performed to music with three beats to
the bar. This means that if a step is taken
on each beat, then each bar starts with the
opposite foot to that of the previous bar.

Tango
Tango dance is one of the most famous partner dances
that emphasizes the vibrant and playful style of
movement, rich expressions, improvistation and
requires close connection and passion between
dancers. The core concept of the tango dance revolves
around leader and follower, where leader through their
embrace gives openings to the follower what to do and
follower then chooses how he will respond.

Waltz
The Waltz is a smooth dance that
travels around the line of dance.
Characterized by its “rise and fall”
action, the Waltz includes a step,
slide and step in 3/4 time.

Foxtrot
The foxtrot is a smooth dance, traveling
around the line of dance. The long walking
movements involve a subtke rise and fall
action. Turning movements are similar to
Waltz, but with a more moderate rise and
fall and more length-wise action.

2. Latin/Rhythm Style
The energetic Latin style of dance usually keeps the couple dancing
over the entire dance floor. This type of dancing inludes:
Rumba
Cha Cha
Swing
Disco
Samba
Paso Doble

Mambo
Rumba
also spelled Rhumba ballroom dance of Afro-
Cuban folk-dance oigin that became
internationally popular in the early 20th century.
Best known for the dancers' subtle side to side
hip movements with the torso erect, the rumba is
danced with a basic pattern of two quick side
steps a slow forward step.

Cha Cha
The cha cha is a vibrant, flamboyant and
playful dance. The light and bubbly feel of
the cha cha gives it a unique sense of fun.
The cha cha requires small steps and lots
of hip motion (Cuban motion), as it is
danced in 4/4 time.

Swing
Swing dance is lively style of social
dancing in which a dancer often lifts,
spins and flips his or her partner.
Consideredboth hip and cool, swing
dancing is a favorite among social
dancers of all ages.

Disco
Disco dance is moving to music in your own way
while wearing disco-inspired clothing. Disco consists
of steps and moves performed in time to the beat of
disco music. some common elements of disco dance
include side-stepping in between bigger moves, raising
your arms overhead, large hip and pelvic movements
and twisting your hands in time to beat. A few common
disco dance steps include pivot turns, foot stamps and
shoulder rocks.

Samba
ballroom dance of Brazilian origin, popularized
in Western Europe and the United States in the
early 1940's. Characterized by simple forward
and backward steps and tilting, rocking body
movements, it is dnced to music in 4/4 time with
syncopated rhythm.

Paso Doble
is French for “Two Step” which refers
to the nature of the powerfully styled
walking step, as they are traditionally
organized in patterns (left, right).

Jive
is one of the five International Latin ballroom
dances. It originated in the United States from
African-Americans in the early 1940's. It is
lively and uninhibited variation of the earlier
forms of Swing dance such as the Jitterbug.

East Coast Swing
is a form of social partner dance. It
belongs to the group of Swing dances. It
is danced under fast swing music,
including rock and roll and boggie-
woggie.

Bolero Dance
is a slow, sensuous rhythm dance coming
from the Spanish tradition. The lead in dance
literally mimics the movements of the toreador
in a bullfight, while the follow alternates
between movements suggesting the bull or the
matador's cape.

2. Modern Dance
Advancements in music technology
brought the birth of many new types of
dances. Introduction of electronic and
rock music brought the era of House,
Punk, Rave and Disco dance.

1.House Dance
is a social dance primarily danced
to house music that has roots in the
clubs of Chicago and of New York.

this dance styles were characterized
by the strong and full body contact of

bumping and jostling both alone and in
groups.
3. Rave Dance

their freestyle of movements, with no rules
about dance routines or synchronized moves,

4. Disco Dance
is a style of dance highly dependent
on disco music. Disco music consists
of strong, rising vocals over a steady
beat and bass line.

5. Bollywood Dance
created as the mix of traditional Indian music,
Hindi dance traditions of the Indian sub-
continent and Middle-Eastern techniques,
Bollywood dance is characterized by elaborate
choreographies, energetic movements and
dances that involve a large number of
participants.

3.Hip-Hop and Funk
Dance
Dancing style of Hip-Hop evolved from the
music style that was introduced during 1970s.
Powered by the great popularity, exposure in
media, movies and television programs, hip-
hop dances found a great foothold in United
States, France, United Kingdom and South
Korea.

It is characterized as a fluid leg-
oriented style danced to funk music,

combined with popping.

4. Street Jazz
It encompassed any

7. Popping
The technique that the dancers need to master to
properly dance Popping is controlled and quick
contrasting and relaxing of muscles that will
create the feeling of jerk throughout the body.
This jerk is referred as ‘’ pop’’ or ‘’ hit ‘’ and can
be used to augment dance routines, movements
and possess.

4. Professional Perform
Dance
Professional dancing was first introduced in
the early years of Italian Renaissance when
music, dance, arts and poetry started to rise
in popularity after the millennia of medieval
stagnation. Refined by the efforts of the
France and Russia, ballet became the
premier technical concert dance.

Dance
Contemporary dance is a style of
expressive dance that combines elements of
several dance genres including modern,
jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
Contemporary dancers strive to connect the
mind and the body through fluid dance
movements.

3. Concert Dance
is a dance performed for an audience. It is
frequently performed for an audience. It is
frequently performed in theater setting,
though this is not a requirement and it is
usually choreograph and performed to set
music.
4. Modern Dance
a free, expressive style of dancing

reaction to classical ballet. In recent
years it has included elements not

6. Folk Dance
Folk dances are dances that are developed by
people that reflect the life of the people of a
certain country or region. Not all ethnic dances
are folk dances; example, ritual dances or
dances or dances of ritual origin are not
considered to be folk dances. Ritual dances are
usually called “Religious dances” because of
their purpose.

generation with increading

court dance, festival dance, etc.

Binasuan
Binasuan is a type of Rural dance where
as the dancers balance glasses of water or
candle lights on their head or hand
without any type of adhesive help.This
dance is performed for occasions like
festival or ethnic passing.
Common Costumes:
For boys: any clothing that stretches to their elbow and
pants that would fit up to their knees and a red or blue
scarf that will be used or not used for the balance. The
boys would only carry and balance 1 glass.
For girls: festive clothing that represents the festivity of
the event and the girls would carry and balance glasses up
to 3 glasses.
