SCIENCE
Quarter 2 – Module 3:
Application of Electromagnetic Waves

Self-Learning Module
2
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit in Science is intended for grade 10 students. It focuses

mainly on the practical applications of the first three regions of electromagnetic
spectrum.
As you have learned in the previous modules that electromagnetic spectrum is
composed of seven regions or EM waves, arranged in decreasing wavelength and
increasing frequency and energy as you go from left to right in it. As a continuation,
in this kit you will study how these varying properties of EM waves were utilized to
determine their usage. You will also do series of activities that will help you explore
the applications and technologies of longer-wavelength radiations: the radio waves,
micro waves and infrared rays.

2
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE
SCIENCE 10

Content Standard:
Demonstrate understanding of the different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Learning Competency:
Cite examples of practical applications of the different regions of EM spectrum,
such as the use of radio waves in telecommunications. S10FE-lla-d-48

I. WHAT HAPPENED?
During this time of COVID-19 pandemic non-contact surveillance in an
isolation area were used to mitigate the transmission of virus to health workers.
Movements of people in a city or municipality, like Liloan, were monitored by the
Mayor using drones. Remote enrolment was made available for parents and learners
to avoid contamination of the virus in the school. Education is still possible despite of
the pandemic with the help of mobile phones, tablets, laptops with internet
connection and other multimedia. All of these are made viable due to
electromagnetic waves. These waves can transmit energy even in a vacuum. With
this characteristic, it plays an important role in our daily activities most especially in
our situation nowadays.

Objectives:
After doing the activities in this SLK, you are expected to:
1. Describe certain characteristics of electromagnetic wave;
2. Identify devices that uses radio wave, microwave, and Infrared
radiation ;and
3. Cite the importance of EM waves to daily life.

3
Let’s review …

Write the correct sequence of the electromagnetic waves in the

electromagnetic spectrum below.

TRUE or False: Write True if the sentence gives the correct idea and False if
NOT.
8. The EM wave with the longest wavelength is radio wave.
9. Gamma rays have the highest energy and shortest wavelength.
10. Electromagnetic spectrum is the complete range of EM
waves arrange in increasing energy.
11. A wave with low energy has a high frequency and long
wavelength.
12. As you move from left to write of the spectrum the energy
decreases.

You have learned from the previous modules that radio waves have the longest
wavelength among the electromagnetic waves. Due to this characteristic it is utilize
mainly in wireless communications.

Activity 2

Turn On and Off

Materials:
TV with remote control, plastic wrapper, paper, cloth, aluminum foil

Procedure:
Note: Before doing the activity make sure that the remote control is working well.
1. Wrap the remote control of your television using the plastic wrapper and try to
turn it on. Be sure to properly wrap the remote control.
2. Repeat the procedure using other materials like paper, cloth, and aluminum
foil.

Material Does the TV turn on? Observation

1. What characteristic of EM wave did you discover?
(Y/N)
plastic wrapper
paper
cloth
aluminum foil
Questions:
1. Which material above is a poor transmitter of signal? Which material could
possibly block signal transmission?
2. What does this tell you about the transmission of signal?
3. What characteristic of EM wave did you discover?

READ THIS….

Transmission of signal can be interrupted. There are materials that can affect
transmission of EM waves and some can even block it. TV sometimes have poor
reception or nothing at all, this mostly caused by signal interference or might be due

6
to weak signal strength. The best solution to boost incoming signal is to use an
antenna, this can help improve the device reception.

Activity 3

Reflected

Materials
TV with remote control, mirror

Procedure
Turn the TV on and off, use the remote control. Place the mirror at right angle
where it could reflect waves from the remote control to the TV. Turn the TV on and off
by pointing the remote control at the mirror.

Questions:
1. How did you position the remote control in order for the TV to
function?
2. What does the turning on and off of the TV indicate even if you are aiming
the control towards the mirror?
3. What characteristic of EM wave did you discover?

Here‘s more…

EM waves can be reflected just like any other mechanical waves. Reflection is the
change in direction of a wave front at an interface between two different media so
that the wave front returns into the medium from
7
which it originated. In other words, reflection means the bouncing of wave as it hits a
surface.

II. WHAT TO LEARN

Uses of Electromagnetic Radiation

1. Radio waves have the longest wavelengths out of all known waves in the
electromagnetic spectrum but however it is at the low-frequency end. They are
produced by making electrons vibrate in an antenna in a radio

8
transmitter and can be received by radio receivers. They have different wavebands
which also has different characteristics of generating in the earth’s atmosphere. The
long waves get scattered around obstacles and follow the shape while the short
waves bounce back the ionosphere and get back over the horizons of sky waves.
Radio waves are used to transmit sound and picture information over long distances.
They are primarily used in various types of communication signals like television
communication, fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and
other navigation systems, bluetooth technology, computer networks and numerous
other applications.
2. Microwave are radio waves with longer wavelengths. It has been used for
satellite communication purposes, point-to-point communication, cellular access
technologies, and television transmission, used for different kinds of sensing and
imaging applications like in security, traffic surveillance, air traffic security “cameras”,
navigation, positioning & measurement, GPS, and defense radar. It is also used in
heating of food, spectroscopy, radio astronomy, medical technology, diagnostics,
imaging, and treatment applications, and many others.
3. Infrared also known as heat radiation, with wavelengths longer than those of
visible light. These are some of the uses, Infrared thermal-imaging cameras are used
to detect heat loss in insulated systems, observe changing blood flow in the skin,
detect overheating of electrical apparatus. Infrared scanners are used for medical
diagnoses, infrared photographs provide details of the Earth’s surface, infrared
telescope used for seeing in the dark, autofocus camera, remote controls used in TV,
cassette recorders, and other devices like car locking systems, computer
accessories (mouse, keyboards, printers),headphones, home security system, and
signage. Used for military and civilian applications which include target acquisition,
surveillance, night vision homing and tracking device.

WRAP UP!

✓ Naturally occurring radio waves are made by lightning or by

astronomical objects. Artificially generated radio waves are used for
fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and
other navigation systems, communications satellites, computer
networks and innumerable other applications. Different frequencies
of radio waves have different propagation characteristics in the
Earth’s atmosphere—long waves may cover a part of the Earth very
consistently, shorter waves can reflect off the ionosphere and travel
around the world, and much shorter wavelengths bend or reflect very little and
travel on a line of sight,

✓ Microwaves can be produced by atoms and molecules. The thermal motion of

atoms and molecules in any object at a temperature above absolute zero causes
them to emit and absorb radiation. Microwaves are quite suitable for
communications devices. Most satellite-transmitted information is carried on
microwaves, as are land-based long-distance transmissions. The sun also emits
microwave radiation, although most of it is blocked by Earth’s atmosphere.

✓ Infrared light includes most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room
temperature. It is emitted or absorbed by molecules when they change rotational-
vibrational movements. Infrared radiation can be used to remotely determine
temperature of objects. That’s is why is it mainly used in military and industrial
applications
