Reflection on Teaching

Reflecting back on my teaching presentation, I can confidently say that I feel very happy
with the outcome. I was happy with the pace that I was going with the lesson. I also enjoyed how
attentive the students were. By keeping constant questioning, I was able to keep an engaging
classroom that didn't quickly lose its interest. Losing interest or unfocusing is a common stigma
that follows math, some ways that I prevented that was by ensuring that my direct instruction
was both engaging and meaningful.
Students appreciate, especially in math, when directions and procedures are clear for the
lesson. During my presentation I ensured that clearly stating materials that students need and
how note taking would proceed. I clearly stated that in the next two slides, vocab words will be
bolded and underlined, giving students the chance to copy it down in their notebooks. We see
this as we go to timestamp (1:37) on the youtube video.
Another aspect that I believe I delivered well on was modeling concepts and skills during
the lesson. During the timestamp (5:55), I moved to the whiteboard and wrote down in good
letters just how coordinate points work. It's appreciated by the students when writing in big bold
letters so there won't be any confusion in terms of sight. Throughout my lesson I am always
asking students questions and incorporating student ideas. I allow students to participate when I
ask certain questions like, “how do we know its a negative slope?” or “what does this linear
equation mean?”
To comment on some things that may have not gone as I planned, on the day that I
presentented my colleagues who went before me had some technological issues and back tracked
everyone on time. This obviously was not a good thing as I had to speed up my lesson by some
amount and didn't get to complete everything I had planned for. This is a learning lesson and
shows that crazy and unpredictable events always can occur in the classrooms. It is to me as an
educator to control the situation and with the time that I have to try and focus my students for
their best personal outcome.
