y = mx + c
m is the gradient (or slope) and c is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis).
1. Complete the following
Equation Gradient (m) y-intercept (c)
table
y = 5x + 2 5 2
e.g. y = 5x + 2
y = 4x + 7
In this case m = +5 and c = y = ½x − 4
+2
y = 3x − 2
i.e. the gradient is 5 and the y = 7x
straight line will cross the
axis at the point (0,2). y = ¾x + ½
y = −4x + 7
y = −3 − 7x

Sometimes the equation of a line is not given in the form y = mx + c. In these cases we
may need to rearrange our equations until they take the form y = mx + c.
.e.g. x+y=2
Then rearrange y = −x + 2
m = −1 and c = 2
x + y = −4
y − 3x = 1
y = 3(x + 5)
y = −2(x − ½)
x–y=0
3y = (x − 4)
4x − 5y = −5
