Building a Résumé Guided Notes


Directions: Fill in the blanks below as I review the PowerPoint Reasons presentation. Be sure to write
down any questions that you have at the bottom of the paper. I will answer all of your questions as we
go along with the presentation. 

1. Your résumé is your Marketing tool. What does this mean?


You’re trying to sell something.

2. On your résumé, you should include:


a. Personal Information
b. An objective statement
c. EducationalBackground
d. Work experience
e. Awards, honors, and achievements.
f. Volunteer projects and involvement
g. Leadership roles in extracurricular activities
h. Special skills that differentiate you in the job field
i. In your own words, what does differentiate mean?
To make yourself different from others.

3. Personal Information Slide: List the 5 personal information sections that you should include in
your résumé.
Name, Address, Phone Number, Email, Website

4. Objective Statement Slide: What is an objective statement? Go to www.mynextmove.org. Click


on Search. Type in a job that you would like. Create your objective based on the information
that you find about your job. The second part of the sentence comes from the “What They Do”
section of the job that you choose. Only type the first sentence of that part. Please watch the
video for a better understanding.

“To obtain a position as a Music Composer that will allow me to


conduct, direct, plan, and lead instrumental or vocal performances by musical artists or groups,
such as orchestras, bands, choirs, and glee clubs; or create original works of music.

5. Education Slide: Using the space below, list your middle and high school educational experience.
Please use the example below as a reference.

organization it was with, and the year it was done. If you have not done volunteer work or if
you are not a member of an organization, put N/A.

7. Awards Slide: List any awards that you have received in middle school. If you have not received
any awards, put N/A.

8. Work Skills Slide: List computer programs that you know how to use effectively. Also list how
many words per minute (WPM) you can type. If you are unsure of how many WPM you can
type, go to NitroType and complete a race to find out.
