The Magician’s Twin: C.S Lewis and the case against Scientism

Lewis explained how science affect people or what are the consequences
after you study the origin of science. First, Lewis demonstrated Science as
religion. The relationship between science and religion as if they were separate
departments of knowledge was, for Lewis, Science may be tainted, and
individuals might want to use science to gain power over others. As a result,
science must be creative in order to come up with new theories and test them
using logic.

According to Lewis, Science is credulity. When we say credulity it defines

the tendency of believing on something that has uncertain evidence. Lewis also
demonstrated that Science discourages skepticism and encourages gullibility.
He concluded that when something is said in the name of science, individuals
are more likely to believe it even though there’s no specific evidence. He wanted
to convey that before believing we should understand it more and confirm if it’s
really accurate or valid.

Lastly, Science as power. Science with its capabilities and possibilities

that are great and transparent seems like it is magical with what would you
might discover with Science and also what you can do with it. It is said that
magic wanted power over nature to control it. People believed that science
would bring peace to the modern world, but much of scientific discovery
seemed committed to control over the world.

Science has good and bad effect. Science's biggest danger is its tendency
to manipulate people, because scientific information causes people to believe
everything you think. People should believe that because of their experience,
they are obligated to tell everyone what they can do. Lewis emphasized the
importance of setting a limit on what technology can do while also respecting
human rights.
Film: Akiro Kurosawa’s Dreams “Village of the Watermills”

Technologies nowadays have lots of purposes. We can consider these as

necessities in our daily lives. On the short movie that I’ve watched, a traveler
passed by in a village with people who live a simple life. Certainly fascinated
with nature and makes use of it on a daily life. He met an old man who live in
the village then talked about how they live their life in an uncivilized place.
They mostly use non-innovated equipment for their chores. They also have a
unique type of burying someone which is far from what people used to see.

It is clear that they preserving what nature gave to them and it is very
unusual these days since we are now occupied by innovated technology. While
technology has provided us with convenience, it has caused a disconnection
between us and the Earth. As if we are something separate from it. The film
portrays that what is really good are the things we take for granted, the
things that we cannot afford to live without, is nature. It makes sense that
in order to attain the good life we should choose to establish a closer
relationship with what we actually need to survive.

As I watch the movie, technology really shapes human and society as

the inventions has more impact for us human. Celebrating life and nature
and it has a major criticism against science and technology as harbingers
of pollution and misery. At the end it’s just us and nature, from which we
came and to which we return, and if we try and remember that, remember
what the important things are, we may be in peace.
Forget ‘developing’ rich countries, it’s time to 'de-develop’ rich countries.
By Jason Hickel

According to Jason Hickel, the idea of “de-developing” rich countries

might prove to be a strong rallying cry in the global south, but it will be tricky
to sell to westerners. A similar majority also believe we should strive to buy
and own less, and that doing so would not compromise our happiness. People
sense there is something wrong with the dominant model of economic
progress and they are hungry for an alternative narrative.

It is all about priorities. In other words growth isn’t an option anymore

because most of countries already grown too much. Scientist are now telling
us that we’re blowing past and develop wrong countries. And the truth is
global crisis is due almost entirely to overconsumption in rich countries.

This is not about giving anything up. And it’s certainly not about living
a life of voluntary misery or imposing harsh limits on human potential. On
the contrary, it’s about reaching a higher level of understanding and
consciousness about what we’re doing here and why.
