Activity1: Identify the positions of the pieces that is used in playing Chess.
Directions: Identify the positions of each piece that was used in Chess. Write the letter on the
board of each piece as shown below:

2. D. Knight/Horse

4. B. Queen (Black)

Activity 2: Point the Word


Directions: Using the information you got from the previous activity, try to provide answers to
the questions below (maximum of two sentences per item).

1. From the previous activity, what do you call the equipment used in placing each chess
piece? Does it have a standard measurement or color combination?

- The equipment used in each chess piece is chess board. Yes, World Chess Federation
recommends chess board squares to be 2-2.5 inches making an entire chessboard 16 to
20 inches.

2. How this equipment associated with Chess?

- Because chess board and chess pieces are the most important equipment in order to
play chess.

Directions: Identify each equipment and explain the use of each in playing Chess.

NAME USE
CHESS BOARD Equipment that is needed to place chess
pieces, Measured 16 to 20 inches.
CHESS CLOCK Used to determine and track the total
duration each player takes in every move they
made.
KING The most important piece in the chess, can
move 1 square upward downward sideward
and diagonal.
QUEEN The most powerful chess piece, can move 1-7
squares in any direction, up, down, left, right,
or diagonal, until the Queen reaches an
obstruction or captures a piece. It cannot
jump over pieces and can only capture one
piece per turn.
KNIGHT Commonly Placed at B1 for white B8 for black
move in an “L-shape” two squares in any
direction vertically followed by one square
horizontally, or two squares in any direction
horizontally followed by one square vertically.
PAWN There are 8 pawns placed at the front of each
team, they can move 2 boxes upward for the
first time they moved and1 box after it. They
can attack diagonally like a bishop but not in
front like a rook and can be promoted if
reached the other side of the board.
ROOK The farthest piece located at corners of the
board, It can only move and attack horizontal
and vertical.
BISHOP The sharpest piece in the game of chess, in
can move and attack diagonally.

Activity 5: Synthesizing Ideas


Guide Questions:

1. What is the most important equipment in playing Chess? How it helps yourself to become
familiar with chess while playing?

- The chess board for a reason that it has features letters and numbers that correlate to
the boxes, it may also be used to chart each player's moves. It allows the player to
become more familiar with the words and notations used in chess in order to get a
better understanding of the game.

2. Why is it important to know the equipment needed in playing Chess? Is it possible to have
alternatives for you to be able to play chess? Discuss your answer.

- It is important to know this basic equipment for able to a person to know the needed
equipment to play chess and the way to use it properly. Obviously there are only 64
squares needed to play chess colored alternately. The chess piece can improvise like
cup of bottles papers small boxes etc.

Directions: Using the information you’ve learned, formulate your reflection by answering the
following questions. (Minimum of 5 sentences)

1. Do you have any possible alternatives to the equipment in Chess? What are those?
- Obviously there are only 64 boxes that the chessboard have, it can be draw and colored
alternatively and the chess pieces can be improvise as bottle cups stones or even crumpled
papers. There are a lot of alternatives for you to play chess, only thing that are needed is you
know how to play it and knows how to use the chess board properly.

2. How will I use those learned concepts in playing chess?

- Keep the basic and fundamental concepts needed to play chess, understand the ways to
improve your play, the proper positioning attacking and defending. Also you might as well learn
to think faster as the time goes by. And most importantly don’t forget to have fun.
