Brief history of Chess:

Chess is a game that has been played for

centuries and was thought to have originated in
India in the 15th century. Long ago, it was
considered a game reserved only for kings and
members of the upper classes. Nowadays, chess
is played by common people even at an early age.
The modern design of chess pieces bears the name
of Staunton, Howard Staunton was an English chess
master who is generally regarded as the world’s
strongest player from 1843-1851.
The first international chess tournament was the London
Tourney played in 1851. Adolf Anderssen won the game
but he became the unofficial best chess player of the
world because he didn’t receive any award or title.
The first American-born chess player is Paul Morphy.
Morphy traveled to Europe in the 1850’s where he beat
all challengers including Adolf Anderssen. However, the
English champion of time (Staunton) refused to play with
him, so Morphy never became a world chess champ.
The first official championship chess tournament was
played in 1866 in London, with sand clock to restrict the
length of a game. A bohemian Jew named Wilhelm
Steinitz won the game. He became the world’s first
official chess champion, holding this title until 1894.

Different kinds of chess pieces and how it moves:

THE KING- The king is the most important chess pieces, however it is
also considered one of the weakest. The king only moves one square
in any direction- up, down, to the sides and diagonally. The king may
never move himself into check where he could be captured.
THE QUEEN- The queen is the most powerful piece. It moves in
any one straight direction-forward, backward, sideways, or
diagonally. As all the other pieces , except the knight.
THE ROOK – The rook may move to any square as far as it
wants, but only forward, backward, and to the sides. The rooks
are particularly powerful pieces when they are protecting each
other and working together.
THE BISHOP- The bishop may move as far as it wants, but only
diagonally. Each bishop starts on one color (light or dark) and
must always stay on that color. Bishops work well together
because they corner up each other weaknesses.
THE KNIGHT- The knights move by going two squares in one
direction, and then one more move just an “L” shape. Knights
are the only pieces that can move over other pieces.
THE PAWN- The pawn moves forward, but captures diagonally.
It can never move backwards. On it’s first move, the pawn can
advance two squares at a time. Succeeding moves will be one
square at a time.
Terms we need to remember:

CASTLING- a move of a king and/or either a rook of the same color along the
players first raw. On the player’s turn, he may move his king two squares over to
one side and then move the rook form the side’s corner on the square next to the
king.
CHECK- the result of a move that places the opposing king under an immediate
threat of capture by on or sometimes two of the opponent’s pieces.
CHECKMATE- a situation in which one player’s king is threatened with capture (in
check) having no move to avoid that threat, thus ending the game.
DRAW- a chess game where no body ends a winner.
EN PASSANT- special pawn capture which can occur immediately after a player
moves a pawn two square forward from it’s starting position and an enemy pawn
could have captured it had it moved only one square forward.
PROMOTION- special ability of a pawn wherein if it reaches the last row of the
other side of the board, it can become any other chess pieces expect the king.
TOUCH AND MOVE LAW- if players wish to adjust a piece on the board, they must
first say “ J adoube” (I adjust) or the equivalent. Apart from that , if piece is
touched it must be move if possible.
CHESS CLOCK- Competitive games of chess must be played with special chess
clocks which time a player only when it is his/her turn to move. The essence is
that a player has to make a certain number to move in a certain total time.
