FUNCTION OF CHESS BOARD
-The Chessboard is where the entire game is
played.
-It serves as the arena for the game of chess,
which offers a structured space for players to
compete.
-The alternating light & dark squares helps
players easily identify and strategize their
moves.
-The chessboard is used as more than simply a
playing surface, it serves as the fundamental
component of the chess game as a whole.

IMPORTANCE OF PAWN AND ITS
STRUCTURE
Back in the 18th century the chess master Philidor once said “Pawn are
the soul of the chess”

3 REASONS WHY PAWNS ARE

IMPORTANT IN CHESS
1. Pawns affect the mobility of the bigger pieces
2. The pawn-structure determines where the weak squares are
3. Weak pawns are important targets.
POSITION AND NUMBER OF
PAWN
Each player
begins the game
with eight
pawns set up on
the second rank
HOW DO PAWN MOVE ACROSS
A CHESSBOARD
First Move- A pawn
moves forward one
square unless it is
that pawn's first move.
If it is the pawn's first
move, then it can move
one or two squares.
HOW DO
PAWN MOVE
ACROSS
A CHESSBOARD
Capturing- The pawn
attacks or captures one
square diagonally in
each direction
HOW DO
PAWN MOVE
ACROSS
A CHESSBOARD
En passant- The rule says
that when a pawn moves two
squares on one turn, the very
next move an adjacent pawn
may capture that pawn as if
it had only moved one square

Pawn Promotion- If
a pawn reaches the
opposite side of the
board, it can be
promoted to a piece
of the player’s
choosing
KNIGHTS
The knight is a chess piece that
is represented by a horse's
head and neck. It is one of the
most unique pieces in the
game, as it is the only piece
that can jump over other
pieces.
WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF
KNIGHTS?

1. ONE OF THE MAIN STRENGTHS OF 4. KNIGHTS ARE ALSO VERY GOOD AT

THE KNIGHT IS ITS ABILITY TO JUMP OUTPOST SQUARES.
OVER OTHER PIECES.

2. KNIGHTS ARE ALSO VERY GOOD AT 3. ANOTHER STRENGTH OF THE KNIGHT IS ITS
CONTROLLING THE CENTER OF THE BOARD. ABILITY TO FORK TWO PIECES AT ONCE.
THE KNIGHT

• When a game begins,

each side starts with
two knights.
Beside the chess
piece rook.
HOW THE KNIGHT MOVES
• The knight moves multiple
squares each move.
Knight movement can be
remembered as an "L-shape"
because it looks like a capital
"L".
• Another unique aspect of the
knight is that it always
alternates between the two
colors.
• Unlike any other piece, the
knight can hop over other pieces.
BISHOPS
The bishop chess piece moves in any
direction diagonally. Chess rules state
that there is no limit to the number of
squares a bishop can travel on the
chessboard, as long as there is not
another piece obstructing its path.
Bishops capture opposing pieces by
landing on the square occupied by an
enemy piece.
BISHOP STARTING POSITION
Due to the bishop's broad
range, it can both defend your
pawns and threaten those of
your opponent, which makes it
simpler to promote your
remaining pawns and
eventually achieve checkmate.
In some cases, having an
additional bishop in the
endgame is insufficient to
checkmate your opponent's
king.
HOW TO MOVE THE BISHOP IN
CHESS?
Similar to a knight, the bishop is
regarded as a small piece and is
worth three points. As long as it is
not blocked by one of its own pieces
or an occupied square, a bishop may
travel as many squares diagonally
as desired. The fact that a bishop
can move in the shape of a "X" makes
it simple to recall how it can
maneuver. By going to the square
that is occupied by the opposing
piece, it can take it.
STRENGTHS VS WEAKNESSES
1.Bishop can easily play a 1. Bishop can only move
role on both sides of the at one colored square.
board.

2. Bishop has long 2. The bishop’s mobility

by your own or your
opponent’s pawns.
ROOKS
The rook is the second
most powerful piece in
chess.
A chess rook can move as
many squares/tiles in the
upwards or downwards as
well as lateral direction,
considering those squares
are not occupied.
WHERE TO PLACE THE ROOK
ON THE CHESSBOARD?
When a game begins, each side starts with two rooks. The
rooks begin the game in the corners of the chessboard:
White's rooks start the game on a1 and h1, while Black's
rooks are located on a8 and h8.
WHERE TO PLACE THE ROOK
ON THE CHESSBOARD?
The white rook can
move to any square
marked with a white
dot. The black rook
can move to squares
with a black dot, or
it can capture the
white pawn on e7.

CHESS?
STRATEGY
&
DEVELOPMENT
United Rooks - Rooks are
strongest when they protect
each other, this is known
uniting or doubling rooks. It
is advisable to try to unite
your rooks along the back
rank as early as possible.
STRATEGY & DEVELOPMENT
Rook on the Seventh - A rook
on the 7th rank often helps
win material or create a
mating attack. It also often
forces the opponent's forces
to take passive positions if
he tries to defend what this
rook is attacking.
STRATEGY & DEVELOPMENT
Castling - is a move in chess that
consists of moving the king two
squares toward a rook on the same
rank and then moving the rook to the
square that the king passed over.

ENDGAME
Rook endgames are the most common
type of endgame. Rooks are most
powerful towards the end of a game
when they can move unobstructed by
pawns and control large numbers of
squares.
QUEEN
The queen is the only piece
on the board during a chess
game that represents a woman,
and she is the most powerful
piece of the game. In the game
of chess, there is only one
queen for each side.
BIRTH OF CHESS QUEEN: A
HISTORY
Marilyn Yalom, inspired by a handful of surviving
medieval chess queens, traces their origin and spread
THE BASIC RULES:
from Spain, Italy, and Germany to France, England,
Scandinavia, and Russia. In a lively and engaging
historical investigation, Yalom draws parallels between
the rise of the chess queen and the ascent of female
sovereigns in Europe, presenting a layered, fascinating
history of medieval courts and internal struggles for
power.
WHERE TO PLACE THE QUEEN
ON THE CHESSBOARD?
According to standard FIDE
chess rules, the queen begins
on the first rank, next to the
king. The white queen begins
on d1 (a white square), the
black queen on d8 (a black
square).

HOW TO MOVE THE QUEEN IN
CHESS?
According to the rules of chess, the queen may move any
number of unoccupied squares in any direction --
horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, giving her the
greatest range of legal moves in the game. While rooks
and bishops can only move along their given axes, the
queen is the only piece that can move any number of
squares in any direction.
KING
The king is not the most powerful
chess piece, but it is the most
important one. The king in chess
is a crucial piece, representing the
player's main piece to protect.

FUNCTIONS
THE KING CAN CAPTURE ANY OF THE
OPPONENT'S PIECES THAT ARE STANDING IN
ANY SQUARE SURROUNDING THE KING.
1. Defensive Anchor- The king anchors the defense, often
staying near the back ranks to avoid exposing itself to
unnecessary risk.

2. Centralizing- During the endgame or later stages, the

king tends to move towards the center to participate more
actively and control key squares.

3. Castling- In castling, the king moves two squares

towards a rook, contributing to both the safety and
development of the rook.

DID YOU
KNOW?
How the queen became the most powerful piece on
the chessboard?
Chess historians believe that the piece we
call as the queen today was not originally
known as the queen. It was originally
called the "fers" or "advisor". In fact, it
was one of the weakest pieces on the board
as it could only move one square
diagonally.
