This market research will be focus in obtaining punctual facts and data that will help to build up a
business plan for compost production. In the UK 140 tonnes of organic waste are wasted per year
meaning 40% of the food ends up in the garbage; with this amount of food, many developing countries
could be fed.
By 2030 agriculture must increase by 12% worldwide to be able to support the needs of the global
population. The increasing demand for organic products and increasing consumer awareness towards
food quality, will raise the demand for good quality compost. 1
Doing research with owners of restaurants, cafes and bakeries, turns out that most businesses must
pay for private services for the collection of organic waste. My goal is to collect all this organic waste
and turn it into good quality compost, and then sell it to agriculture business, farms, vertical
plantations and even private allotments.
The marketing research plan has two parts: Food & Beverage Businesses and potential customers.
We will seek to establish alliances with restaurants from which we will use their organic waste. We
will oversee collection of the organic waste. We will work with restaurants and establishments
committed to follow instructions that will be provided as part of a training to ensure the quality of the
organic waste. All venues will be trained and given the necessary equipment to carry out the
separation process of organic waste. A survey will be carried out at the restaurants to find out about
their knowledge of separating different types of waste, any interest in agriculture, if they know how
compost is done and their commitment to climate change.
Secondly, we must study who are our potential customers. In this part of the market research, there
will be a survey sent to business in the agriculture fields, allotments, greenhouses and farms. We will
evaluate the quality of the compost they currently use, price, type, the impact on the environment
when producing it, and especially if the current product provides them with the same benefits that
our product will.
Primary data. We will be conducting surveys to Food & Beverages businesses and our potential target
market in the agricultural field. This will help us to establish a direct communication with these
businesses, so we get to know the needs, demands, protocols and challenges that we need to face.
Also, we want to collaborate with companies committed to the environment, so we can make a
difference with our businesses, and make sure we are going to be able to deliver the best product.
Secondary data: We will be looking into statistics and external research so this information will provide
us with knowledge on the growth of the agricultural companies and where are we heading in the next
years towards demand. External data will guide us to have a proper marketing, operational and
strategical system in place so we can deliver our product with higher efficiency than our competitors.
