The simple mathematics behind the global transition

< 1.7°C UN agreed on stabilization of temperature rise

< 450 ppm

that means stabilization of CO2-concentration

anually we add another 2.5 ppm to

402 ppm existing concentration

this leaves us another

20 years to get to
0 ppm increase !

Investment into REN electricity for a 100% electrified mobility in India – by solar

Question: How much investmend is needed if the complete India road transport system should run
on electricity from solar?

• 24 billion US$ are required to supply 100% electrified mobility in India

by solar energy

Question. What if the oil spendings of 80 Billion US$/a could be invested in solar power in India?

• about 110 GW capacity could be extended every year

• 180 TWh electricity could be generated from that!

• Additional power required: 50 TWh

• Average solar irradiation in India: 1930 kWh/m² per year
• Average annual PV output: 1610 kWh/kWp
+ wind and solar create local jobs! • Currently installed PV capacity: 9010 MWp
• Additional Photovoltaic capacity required for 100%
mobility electrification: ~ 31 GWp
Source: data: IEA WEO 2017,

Good news & even better news for REES

In a stable grid environment no REES are needed below

60-70 % REN in the grid (at least below 50%)

However, there are further business models for REES 

• Reduced FIT lead to big price gap between FIT and utility electricity prices
(buy expensive but sell cheap: In Germany: 28 Cent vs. 11 Cent FIT vs. 5-6 Cent production)

• Back-up power systems can „earn money“ in stead of just beeing „ready“
(Battery back-up systems are quicker, no pollution, no noise)

• Not all regions in the world have a stable grid!

• High Power EV Charging (150-350 kW) needs „buffer“ solutions

• Regions with flexible tarifs are already today

TÜV SÜD 06.02.2018 28

Early bird markets for RESS

At the moment:
Image: Daimler

• Markets are mainly driven by subsidies. E.g. Germany: 1000 Systems installed in 2016/17
(40% subsidies)
• Solar (and EV) enthusiasts who just like the idea of storing their PV harvest and use it at night or
charge it into their EV over night.
• Grid operators and utilities are testing the systems despite they‘re not really needed as of today
• Some regions have really „weak“ grid conditions (partly e.g. Italy)
• Some regions already have flexible tarifs also for commercial and private customers.

TÜV SÜD AG 14-01-22 Corporate Presentation Slide 29

Early bird markets for RESS

In the near future: Image: ABB

• Installations of REN still continue soarring. Sooner or later there is an oversupply of electricity at
particular weather conditions while not all fossil powerplants can easily reduce or shut down.
• Countries aiming to become almost 100% supplied by REN soner or later enter a „critical“
transition phase where fast storage systems can guarantee power supply and stability of
frequency
• If flexible electric power tarifs are getting „mainstream“ new business modell will pop up (Store
when cheap sell when expensive)
• Storage systems can even make money without selling in a „capacity market“.
TÜV SÜD AG 14-01-22 Corporate Presentation Slide 30
Coming markets for RESS

In the future:
Image: Danish Wind Energy Association

• With increasing amounts of REN in the grid, grid stabilization, frequency stabilization becomes a
necessity
• Seasonal storage solutions – together with P2G technologies – might become necessary in
regions with an unbalanced build up of REN (a lot of PV, no wind or a lot of wind but no PV)
• Regions without stabil external electric grid connection (e.g. Japan) might have additional needs
for energy storage solutions

TÜV SÜD AG 14-01-22 Corporate Presentation Slide 31

Challenges of (residential) storage systems:

• Economic success depends on lifetime performance – 10 years plus!

• Local environmental conditions must be specified and testet – inside/outside operation

• Sytems installed in the house have more stabil conditions

but saftety requirements and proof of product safety is key
to insurance companies – fire insurance!

• There are almost no existing safety regulations for inhouse installations of RESS

• Serveral countries (e.g. Japan, Germany) issued guidelines for RESS

• Standards are evolving – dynamic environment

• US standards are slightly ahead – e.g. UL 1973 – but various additional approvals are necessary
(e.g. NFPA 70, ANSIZ 535)

• Third party test labs have set up various certification schemes e.g. TUV SUD Mark for RESS

Risk categories that need to be covered by safety/compliance testing

• Chemical safety
• Fire protection (energy in the battery)
• Mechanical integrity
• Electrical shock protection
• Electrical safety (incl. short circuit protection, overcharge protection, external short circuit)

But also:

• Overall efficiency
• Environmental conditions (performance)
• Life cycle stability
• Electrical performance (switch times)
• Output power quality

Most aspects are covered in evolving and existing standards – incl. national regulations

Legal requirements

The legal requirements:

 are defined by the legislation, e.g. European Commission or US authorities and
regional/local requirements like from “Fire Safety Authorites”
 belongs to products produced in or imported to the markets
 are addressing system safety, health and environmental protection.

Storage systems must comply in the European Union with the CE marking regulations and
related directives, in North America with the listing requirements and the national codes

With the CE-mark or listing mark, the manufacturer, his authorized representative or the
importer indicate that the product meets the legal requirements.

Helpful for the manufacturers are the harmonized product standards. Following this
standards, compliance is presumed. (e.g. IEC 63056)

For the USA a product standard is available (UL 9540), but further requirements need to be
met

TÜV SÜD 06.02.2018 37

Global market access, recommended strategy:

Basic steps of the strategy are:

Step 1: Find the applicable directives, standards and regulations
Step 2: Determine the applicable conformity assessment module
Step 3: Carry out a risk assessment, define measures based on harmonized standards
(FMEA, SIL, FUSI…)
Step 4: Implement the measures defined at the risk assessment
Step 5: Create the technical file (TF)
Step 6: Declare conformity and do the CE-marking / apply for UL 9540 compliance

Advantage:
 Proven in use methodology
 Applicable for all markets
 Will be required by the revised LVD
 Helps to minimize risks to forget essential requirements

TÜV SÜD AG 14-01-22 Corporate Presentation Slide 38

Your checklist: Content of the Technical File (TF)

The TF includes the following reports and documents:

 the general description of the product;

 general arrangement drawing
 the list of standards and essential requirements that are met
 the risk (matrix, FMEA) assessment to identify health and safety requirements
 the design and fabrication drawings
 detailed technical information on key aspects of the product;
 reporting of calculations and tests
 description of control philosophy/logic wiring, circuit diagrams, parts list
 certificates and test reports
 manuals for installation, user, maintenance,
 for series production, the internal rules that are adhered to ensure accordance with the
Directive(s)
 specifications, datasheets for sub-assemblies and their DoC`s
 quality control & commissioning procedures
 Declaration of Conformity (DoC)

IEC 62619 – the umbrella standard for industrial applications

• The IEC 62619 covers general risks in

industrial applications:
– Hints for design in regards to wiring,
venting, thermal management
– Tests for foreseeable misuse (short circuit,
impact, drop, thermal abuse, overcharge,
forced discharge)
– Internal short circuit test either on cell level
or on system level (propagation)
– System safety tests (tests of the control of
the system in overcurrent,
overtemperature and overvoltage state)
• Additional standards for the specific use
cases, are under discussion at the
moment

TÜV SÜD Greater China 18-02-06 Slide ‹Nr.›

Some test requirements out of the IEC 62619 standard:

- Non-metal parts need to be resistant to abnormal heat

- Requirements for case material
- Short Circuit test for installation (low SOC, quite high
resistance up to 100mOhm)
- Insulation requirements
- False polarity test (one module in false polarity and check the
reaction of the battery)
- Drop tests
- Overdischarge Control Test
