INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

JANNA G. MATILLANO 12-MENDELEEV
WEEK NO. 8 WORK SHEET NO. 7 QUARTER Second Quarter

TOPIC Chapter 3 The Human Person as an Embodied Spirit

Lesson 1 The Body as Limitation and Transcendence
CONTENT STANDARD The learner understands the human person as an embodied
spirit.
PERFORMANCE The learner distinguishes his/her own limitations and the
STANDARD possibilities for his/her transcendence.
LEARNING The learners will be able to recognize and evaluate own
COMPETENCY limitations and possibilities for their transcendence.

Activity 1: Read “Lino’s Self Determination” and answer the questions below.
Many people admire Lino for being the youngest director of the biggest
conglomerate in the Philippines. He is also one of the richest bachelors under 30
years old. Little do people know that he was once a poor boy who dreamed big
and worked hard to attain his current status. When asked about successes, Lino
said that he considers seeing his family happy, imparting his knowledge to
others, and being able to serve others as the successes he is proudest of.
1. Like Lino, all people have lifelong goals that they want to fulfill. If you were
finally able to meet your life goal, how would you feel? Why?
I will be absolutely satisfied. But it doesn't last long because it's time to set new goals. In
fact, I think it's impossible to achieve all of our goals because our goals change over time.
And this is absolutely normal. It is not normal to be aimless. A meaningless life is the worst
thing that can happen in our lives. Because you could waste your life, it's terrible. When I
achieve all my goals, I feel that being here has served my purpose because my goals affect
the lives of others. But we must move forward without breathing. I think there is a beginning
but no end. Life is a continuous learning process.
2. Do you think your perspective in life will change? Why? Why not?
From my point of view, if I will be able to achieve my goals in life it
wouldn’t change my perspective in life. Owing to, my life is endless for me
and hence, my goals are unlimited. When my one of the goal fulfills another
goal takes its place.

ACTIVITY 2: CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

Explore your abilities and limitations. In the “I can” column, write down the skills
and abilities that define you as a person. In the “I cannot” column, list down the
things you have tried to do but could not because of your personal limitations.

I CAN I CANNOT
 lead well in class  rejection at entrance exams
 communicate effectively
 proper diet and exercise
 study well
 write an excellent article  inability to be flexible
 apply my self-confidence in  sports due to asthma
everything
 do household chores
1. What enabled you to do the things you
identified in the first column?
My passion, dreams and goals enables me to
do the things that defines me as a person.
2. Do you see yourself overcoming the
limitations that prevented you from doing the
things you stated in the second column? Why?
Why not?
Of course, anyone can overcome their
limitations, I can do it if I believe in myself, and
over time, I can overcome them all. We can
because our limits only serve as an introduction
to new ways of knowing ourselves, and when
these things make the most of ourselves, we
will achieve perfection and become embodied
human characters.

ACTIVITY 3: APPLICATION
Complete the chart by rewriting your present limitations with reference to your
answers in the previous activities. Make an action plan towards transcendence.

THE REVITALIZE ME
My Limitations Plan Towards Transcendence
Being productive starts with knowing Set targets. If you want to
your limits transcend yourself, you need to
have something to aim for.

Be aware of limiting thoughts Don’t be limited by own thoughts.

Overthinking Don’t listen to people’s

negativity.

Fears of heights Put God always at the center of

your dreams.

You will not be able to save Always look at the positive side
everyone of life and be inspired.

JOURNAL ENTRY:
Write a reflection paper by answering these questions:
 Is reaching transcendence always a good thing? Why?
Why not?
Achieving excellence is not always good for me. Because
sometimes we have our limits and that's what makes us
human. Because we are not gods. The only thing we could
do was practice physically and mentally while maintaining
and balancing our passion for what we truly wanted to
achieve. It depends on how it is perceived at a given
moment. When there is transcendence, there is
transcendence. ... There is always a way. Whether it is the
death of the self, a spiritual experience, an acid journey, or
a psychotic break, you must always descend the mountain
and reintegrate into normal reality. This is something many
people don't think about, but how you incorporate these
peak experiences is important to how you use them.
People should always try to use them in a positive way and
transform these experiences into something. from this. Use
it to help others. Otherwise, you can go wrong and go
completely crazy. There is no such thing as "always" in this
creation. Overcoming is much higher than that, so it
shouldn't be labeled as "good, bad". Transcending is
divine.
