Our heritage: 148 years of business success

1866 Establishment of a Mannheim-based steam boiler

inspection association by 21 operators and
owners of steam boilers, with the objective of
protecting man, the environment and property
against the risk emanating from a new and largely
unknown form of technology
1910 First vehicle periodic technical inspection (PTI)
1926 Introduction of the “TÜV mark / stamp” in Germany

1958 Development of a Bavaria-wide network of vehicle

What is it?
 A “plasticizer” to make plastics such as polyvinyl
chloride (PVC) more flexible or resilient
 Also used as a solvent
Application
 Found in consumer products such as toys, food
packaging, hoses, raincoats, lubricants, adhesives,
detergents, hair spray and shampoo
Effects on human health
 Poses health risk when leaches out of the product
and absorbs into the body. May occur during periods
of sustained mouthing action (sucking and chewing)
and enters body through saliva
 Once absorbed, some phthalates may cause
adverse effects on reproduction, development, liver
and kidney
