Applications of Derivatives (Ch4, Thomas 12th Edt.)

4.1. Definition Let f be a function with domain D. Then f has an absolute maximum value on D
at a point c if

f ( x ) ≤ f (c ) for all x ∈ D

And an absolute minimum value on Dat c if

f ( x ) ≥ f (c ) for all x ∈ D.

 Maximum and minimum values are called extreme values of the function f
 Absolute maxima or minima are also called referred to as global maxima or minima

Example 1. Find the absolute extrema of the function y=x 2 on the domains D, (−∞, ∞), [0,2], ¿
and (0,2).
