History of IoT
History of IoT

❖ The term Internet of Things is 16

years old
❖ But the actual idea of connected
devices had been around longer, at
least since the 70s.
❖ Back then, the idea was often
called “embedded internet” or
“pervasive computing”.

6
History of IoT

❖ But the actual term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin

Ashton in 1999 during his work at Procter&Gamble.
❖ Ashton who was working in supply chain optimization, wanted to
attract senior management’s attention to a new exciting
technology called RFID.
❖ Because the internet was the hottest new trend in 1999 and
because it somehow made sense, he called his presentation
“Internet of Things”
❖ Even though Kevin grabbed the interest of some P&G executives,
the term Internet of Things did not get widespread attention
for the next 10 years.

Definitions

We are entering an era of the “Internet of Things” (abbreviated

as IoT).
There are multiple definitions of IoT but we will read here the
two of them

Definition-1
IOT First one is defined by Vermesan and second by Pe˜na-L´opez.
Definitions The Internet of Things as simply an interaction between the physical and
digital worlds. The digital world interacts with the physical world using a
plethora of sensors and actuators.

Definition-2
Another is the Internet of Things is defined as a paradigm in
which computing and networking capabilities are embedded in
any kind of conceivable object.

Why IoT?
Why Internet of Things/Objectives?

❖ Internet is everywhere, More Things/Devices are connecting day by day

❖ You can not avoid Internet of Things
❖ In this course, student will explore various components of Internet of
things such as Sensors, internetworking and cyber space. In the end they
will also be able to design and implement IoT circuits and solutions. The
main objective includes:
❖ To study the fundamentals about IoT
ii) To study about IoT Access technologies, Hardware and Software
iii) To study the design methodology and different IoT hardware platforms
iv)
To study the basics of IoT Data Analytics and supporting services
v) To study about various IoT case studies and industrial applications
