The study of all the elements of language that contribute


toward acoustic and rhythmic effects, chiefly
in poetry but also in prose.

Word Stress

Word stress is the emphasis we place in a specific syllable of a


word when pronouncing it.

Monosyllabic Words Multisyllabic Words


Monosyllabic Words

Words or one-syllable words are stressed when said in


isolation.

Example:
Ouch! What? Now? Wow!
Multisyllabic Words

Word/s with two or more syllables have only one primary


stress.

Two important rules about word stress:

1. One word, one stress


2. The stress is always on a vowel
Sentence Stress

A sentence may have a different meaning once the stress is


shifted to another word.

I can’t do it.
I can’t do it.
I can’t do it.
PITCH

The degree of highness or lowness of a tone.


Pitch can also be used to emphasize important points,
information or question in a speech.
Rising:

“I hear the Health Centre is expanding. So, is that the new


doctor?”

“W hen does the meeting start?”


Falling:

“OK, here’s the magazine you wanted.”

“Take your hands out of your pockets.”


VOLUME

The loudness or softness of sounds. Used to show


emotions such as fear or anger.

PAUSE

A temporary stop. It is used to emphasize a word, phrase or


a crucial statement.
Pausing indicates commas, semi-colons, and colon or
periods.
Why use a PAUSE?

- to emphasize that the information coming next


is important, or to give the audience time to process
what you have just said.
Example:
Wanting to impress my wife on our anniversary [pause] I
prepared eggs [pause] bacon [pause] and pancakes for breakfast.

Example:
We were married ten years ago [pause] I still remember
my first look at her coming up the aisle.

- Exercising active listening skills
- Enhancing imagination and creativity

2-3 minutes speech/spoken poetry, recite and upload it to your
Google Classroom. Make sure to follow the rubrics that will be
given. Be creative as you can, you may use special effects,
transitions sound effect and etc.
