Laboratory capabilities

The Large Angle Stability System is designed for the study of ship hydrostatics
and stability, this includes the following:

1. Inclining experiment
2. Influence of a free surface
3. Influence of a suspended mass, (with the optional crane ship model)
4. Effect of flooding various compartments
5. Rolling experiments
Specifications

Apparatus designed to enable students to study ship hydrostatics and stability.

Supply includes:

o Water Tank
- Average Dimension
Length 2.66 m
Width 1.95 m
Height 2.17 m

Water Tank Floating Ship Model

o Floating Ship Model

The model should be constructed of glass reinforced plastic (GRP). It should be

supplied to scale ( range 1/70) of general cargo vessel.

 Model should include a number of transverse watertight bulkheads

in representation positions.
 Compartments fitted with individual flooding valves.
o Dynamometer
 The dynamometer measures the righting moment of the model.
 The dynamometer holds the model at any angle of heel within the
range, with the model either free to trim or with heeling axis kept
horizontal.
 It exerts no vertical force on the model.
 It is floor standing, with castors and is supplied complete with
counterweights.
The dynamometer is supplied in the form of sub-assemblies and only a minimum
of assembly work is required. Assembly may be completed using a basic tool kit.
The following assembly procedure should be used:

1. Assemble the pillar (1) to the base (2) using M8 bolts.

2. Position the pivot housing assembly (3) complete with aims and struts to the
pillar.
3. Screw the counterbalance weight stud (4) into end plate (5). Remove
retaining knob (6), screw on counterbalance weight (7). Replace and tighten
retaining knob.
4. Locate scale pans (8) onto balancing arms (19). Lock vertical strut (17) with
locking plate (15).
5. Screw pointer (9) into bottom of pivot housing assembly using an open
ended spanner on the flats provided.
6. Set pans (8) level using weights (18).
7. Fit clamping attachment (10) into swivel block (11).
8. Set horizontal arms (20) level with a spirit level using counterbalance
weight (7).
o Clinometer
 The clinometer measures the inclination of the model, over the
range of 0 to 45 degrees. It should be battery powered.

 The Clinometer is a precision, battery operated, electronic digital

gauge that allows the inclination of the model vessel to be
measured. The angle of heel is indicated directly in units of degrees
on a LCD display with a resolution of 0.01 degrees at angles less
than 10 degrees and 0.1 degrees at angles greater than 10 degrees.
The Clinometer incorporates an artificial horizon so that an
independent reference is not required when taking measurements.
Requirements
Electrical supply: 220V-240V/1ph/50Hz, 2A
120V/1ph/60Hz, 4A
