INTRODUCTION
English translation is a very important subject, closely related to the learning process
of English language students, especially for third year students. This subject requires
each student to be proficient in converting languages from English to Vietnamese and
Vietnamese to English. Furthermore, in order to practice translation efficiently and
properly, students must have knowledge of various aspects of life, such as: culture,
society, science, and so on. I selected tourism, economics, and Covid-19 as my
translation subjects since they are all influence and are directly related to people's
lives. Not only that, these are also matters that have attracted a lot of public attention
in recent years. I made this study to research and gain more knowledge about the
above issues as well as improve my translation skills. The “tourism” source language
text that I use is about the beautiful island - Fiji. The passage about “Covid-19” is
about the closure of the country also has an impact on pollution in India. And the last
part is the "Golden Decade" of Vietnam's economy after Covid-19.

 DEVELOPMENT

CHAPTER I: Fiji island

1.1 Source Language Text

The island nation of Fiji is situated in the shimmering South Pacific, between Hawaii
and Australia. Two thirds of Fiji's 330 islands are uninhabited, making it one of the
most unspoiled places on the planet. Fiji's jagged reefs and warrior culture kept
European explorers and traders at bay for centuries. The result is a society that's
preserved it's communal traditions and deep connections to the land and sea.

Today, Fiji is one of the friendliest places on earth. The Fijian greeting 'Bulla' means
'life' and 'good health'. You'll hear it within minutes of arriving, and before long, you'll
be calling it out with equal gusto. The main island is Vitu Levu. This is home to 85
percent of Fiji's population, which consists mostly of Melanesian and Indian peoples.

A two and half hour drive from Nadi International Airport is Fiji's capital, Suva.
Wander the streets filled with colonial architecture, browse the markets, or simply
hang out with locals by the sleepy harbor. From Suva, head west along the fabulous
Coral Coast. This 50-mile of stretch of beaches and bays is fringed by a coral reef that
literally touches the shoreline. No need for dive-boats here. Just pull on a face mask,
step from your resort into the water, and discover why Fiji is known as one of the
world's great snorkeling and diving destinations.

light that seems to move slightly. So we can imagine that the island of Fiji is located
in the South of the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

places on the planet". An “uninhabited” place has no people living in it.

Unspoiled : Nơi còn hoang sơ

In the sentence “Two thirds of Fiji's 330 islands are uninhabited, making it one of the

most unspoiled places on the planet". An “unspoiled” place is beautiful because it has

not been changed or damaged by people. That means most of Fiji's islands are

uninhabited, still very wild with the beauty of nature.

Jagged : Gồ ghề, lởm chởm

centuries”. So "jagged reefs" are reefs lying under the ocean with jagged, rugged
shapes.

Gusto : Hào hứng , tràn đầy sức sống

“You'll hear it within minutes of arriving, and before long, you'll be calling it out with
equal gusto”. In this position, the word “gusto” means: great energy, enthusiasm, and
enjoyment that is experienced by someone taking part in an activity. Therefore, we
can understand that after arriving in Fiji, you will be transmitted a lot of positive
energy, especially through their greeting 'Bulla'.

hang out with locals by the sleepy harbor". This word “wander" in this position
means: to walk around slowly in a relaxed way or without any clear purpose or
direction.

Colonial architecture : Kiến trúc thuộc địa

architecture” in this case is: colonial furniture or buildings are in the style of a period
when a country was a colony.

activity or excitement.

Coral reef : rặng san hô ngầm

touches the shoreline". A “coral reef” is an area of coral, the top of which can

sometimes be seen just above the sea. Thus, we can imagine the image of a beautiful
coral reef close to the coast.

Shoreline : Đường bờ biển

touches the shoreline". This word “shoreline” means: the edge of a sea, lake, or wide

river. We can understand the word "shoreline" is the beautiful coastline of Fiji

surrounded by coral reefs.

Australia. Hai phần ba trong số 330 hòn đảo của Fiji không có người ở, khiến nó trở

CHAPTER II: The world’s largest coronavirus lockdown is having a dramatic
impact on pollution in India

2.1. Source Language Text

When India imposed a nationwide lockdown a week ago, it was designed to stop the
imminent spread of the novel coronavirus. But grinding this country of 1.3 billion
people to a near halt has also provided a temporary remedy to another pressing health
issue: suffocating pollution levels. The world's largest lockdown means all factories,
markets, shops, and places of worship are now closed, most public transport
suspended and construction work halted, as India asks its citizens to stay home and
practice social distancing. So far, India has more than 1,300 confirmed cases of
Covid-19, including 35 deaths.

Already, data shows that the main cities are recording much lower levels of harmful
microscopic particulate matter known as PM 2.5, and of nitrogen dioxide, which is
released by vehicles and power plants. PM 2.5, which is smaller than 2.5 micrometers
in diameter, is considered particularly dangerous as it can lodge deep into the lungs
and pass into other organs and the bloodstream, causing serious health risks. The
sudden fall in pollutants and the subsequent blue skies signal a dramatic shift for India
which has 21 of the world's 30 most polluted cities, according to the IQAir AirVisual's
2019 World Air Quality Report.

In the capital, New Delhi, government data shows the average concentration of PM
2.5 plunged by 71% in the space of a week - falling from 91 microgram per cubic
meter on March 20, to 26 on March 27, after the lockdown began. The World Health
Organization considers anything above 25 to be unsafe. The data from the Central
Pollution Control Board (CPCB), part of India's Environment Ministry, was collated
by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). Nitrogen dioxide went
from 52 per cubic meter to 15 in the same period - also a 71% fall. Mumbai, Chennai,
Kolkata and Bangalore have also recorded a fall in these air pollutants.

"impose" in this case means: to officially force a rule, tax, punishment,...or force
someone to accept something, especially a belief or way of living. Therefore, we can
understand that the Indian government has issued a social distancing order across the
country to prevent the Covid-19 epidemic.

Grinding : Tàn phá

“But grinding this country of 1.3 billion people to a near halt has also provided a
temporary remedy to another pressing health issue: suffocating pollution levels”. In
this situation, the word "grinding" can be understood as: devastating, damaging India
with 1.3 billion people, causing this country to lock down .

Remedy : Giải pháp khắc phục

temporary remedy to another pressing health issue: suffocating pollution levels". The
word "remedy" means : one way or method to solve a certain problem. So, we can

understand that the closure of the country also gives India a temporary solution to
solve the problem of environmental pollution.

PM 2.5 : Bụi mịn PM 2.5

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an air pollutant that is a concern for people's health
when levels in air are high.

Suffocating : Trầm trọng

“But grinding this country of 1.3 billion people to a near halt has also provided a
temporary remedy to another pressing health issue: suffocating pollution levels". The
word "suffocating" in this case it means: stuffy, difficult to breathe, indicating the
serious pollution level, affecting people health.

Microscopic : Cực nhỏ

“Already, data shows that the main cities are recording much lower levels of harmful
microscopic particulate matter known as PM 2.5”. Microscopic means :very small
and only able to be seen with a microscope.

Lodge : Đi sâu vào

“PM 2.5, which is smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, is considered particularly
dangerous as it can lodge deep into the lungs and pass into other organs and the
bloodstream”. The word "lodge" in this case means: to go deep, to penetrate deep into
the human body. Thus, we can understand that PM 2.5 will be very dangerous when
entering the lungs and human organs.

Subsequent : Điều gì xảy ra sau 1 sự việc nào đó

“The sudden fall in pollutants and the subsequent blue skies signal a dramatic shift
for India".“Subsequent”: happening after something else. Therefore, after India
implemented social distancing, the air was clear, the amount of pollutants decreased
and then the sky was blue again.

IQAir :

IQAir is a Swiss air quality technology company, specializing in protection against
airborne pollutants, developing air quality monitoring and air cleaning products. IQAir
also operates AirVisual, a real-time air quality information platform .

Concentration : Nồng độ

number or amount of something in the same place.

2.4. Translated work

Ấn Độ đã thực hiện các biện pháp hạn chế trên toàn quốc một tuần trước, nó được
thiết lập để ngăn chặn sự lây lan sắp tới của biến chủng coronavirus mới. Nhưng việc
tàn phá đất nước 1,3 tỷ dân này, khiến mọi hoạt động gần như dừng lại hoàn toàn cũng
đã đem lại một giải pháp khắc phục tạm thời cho vấn đề cấp bách khác về sức khỏe:
mức độ ô nhiễm trầm trọng. Sự đóng cửa lớn nhất thế giới này đồng nghĩa với việc tất
cả các nhà máy, khu chợ, cửa hàng và nơi thờ tự hiện đều bị đóng cửa, hầu hết các

CHAPTER III: Thập niên vàng' của kinh tế Việt Nam hậu Covid-19

3.1 Source Language Text

Năm 2020, kinh tế thế giới suy thoái do chịu ảnh hưởng của Covid-19. Tuy nhiên, sau
đại dịch, Việt Nam dự báo sẽ “bứt phá” với mức tăng trưởng 6-7%, vượt mục tiêu
Quốc hội đề ra và một “thập niên vàng” ngay trước mắt. Theo TS. Trần Hồng Quang,
Viện trưởng Viện Chiến lược Phát triển, Bộ Kế hoạch - Đầu tư, dự thảo chiến lược
phát triển kinh tế - xã hội giai đoạn 2021-2030 có nhiều nội dung đổi mới, đáp ứng tốt
hơn đòi hỏi của thực tiễn và yêu cầu phát triển của đất nước trong giai đoạn hiện nay.

Theo dự thảo Chính phủ, nền kinh tế Việt Nam giai đoạn 2021 - 2030 có ba mục tiêu
mang tính chiến lược gồm: đột phá về thể chế, đột phá nguồn nhân lực, đột phá về hạ
tầng. Việt Nam kỳ vọng đạt tốc độ tăng trưởng GDP khoảng 7%/năm. Trong đó,
GDP/người thực tế giai đoạn này đạt 4.700 - 5.000 USD (năm 2020, GDP/người là
3.521 USD). Đến năm 2030, trở thành nước đang phát triển có công nghiệp hiện đại,
thu nhập trung bình cao, GDP/người giá thực tế đạt khoảng 7.500 USD; mục tiêu năm

đặc biệt là hợp tác kinh tế song phương giữa Việt Nam và Singapore trên lĩnh vực
thương mại điện tử và kinh tế số. Cách mạng công nghiệp 4.0 đã thâm nhập mọi mặt
của đời sống xã hội, từ những ứng dụng mua sắm trực tuyến như Amazon, Lazada,
Alibaba…; mạng xã hội Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok và Facebook đến ứng dụng đặt
xe như Grab, Gojek. Trong khu vực Châu Á, các nước có thâm niên nhiều năm và có
nền kinh tế số phát triển như Singapore, Hàn Quốc và Trung Quốc có thể đem đến
nhiều kinh nghiệm hữu ích giúp nền kinh tế Việt Nam hướng đến phát triển nền kinh
tế số linh hoạt và hiệu quả, qua đó giúp tăng cường năng lực cạnh tranh.

the word "recession" to represent the English meaning of the word "suy thoái". Its
meaning is: a temporary fall in a country's or the world's business activities. Because
this word is set in the context of the world economic downturn due to the impact of
the Covid-19 pandemic, it can show the decline of the economy.

Bứt phá : Breakthrough

In the sentence “Việt Nam dự báo sẽ “bứt phá” với mức tăng trưởng 6-7%”. I chose
the word "breakthrough" to represent the English meaning of the word "bứt phá". Its
meaning is : a sudden solution of a problem leading to further advances. Because this
word represents the progress and surpassing of Vietnam's economy with high growth
rate.

Vượt mục tiêu : Exceed

In the sentence “Vượt mục tiêu Quốc hội đề ra và một “thập niên vàng” ngay trước
mắt.”. I chose the word "exceed" to represent the English meaning of the word " vượt

mục tiêu" . Its meaning is : to go past the level, limit, rate, ..., that you are allowed.
This word describes the achievement, the growth exceeds the set target together with
the word "breakthrough" showing the growth of the Vietnamese economy.

Tận dụng : Make use of

In the sentence “Nhờ thành công trong việc kiểm soát tốt dịch bệnh, tận dụng tốt cơ
hội ngoại thương với nhiều quốc gia”. I chose the phrase "make good use of" to
represent the English meaning of the word “tận dụng”. It represents the literal
meaning of the word

Song phương : Bilateral

In the sentence “Hợp tác kinh tế song phương giữa Việt Nam và Singapore”. I chose
the word "Bilateral " to represent the English meaning of the word "song phương". Its
meaning is : affected, signed, agreed,or involved by two sides, two different
organizations, or countries . This word indicate the cooperation and coordination of
the two countries

Thâm nhập : Penetrate

In the sentence “Cách mạng công nghiệp 4.0 đã thâm nhập mọi mặt của đời sống xã
hội, từ những ứng dụng mua sắm trực tuyến như Amazon, Lazada, Alibaba…”. I
chose the phrase "penetrate" to represent the English meaning of the word "thâm
nhập". Its meaning is: to succeed in becoming part of an organization, social, etc. and
working within it . This word shows the influence of technology on human life.

Đặt xe : Ride-hailing

“Cách mạng công nghiệp 4.0 đã thâm nhập mọi mặt của đời sống xã hội, từ những
ứng dụng mua sắm trực tuyến như Amazon, Lazada, Alibaba…; mạng xã hội Twitter,
Instagram, Tik Tok và Facebook đến ứng dụng đặt xe như Grab, Gojek.”. I chose the
phrase "ride-hailing" to represent the English meaning of the word "đặt xe". Its
meaning is : the activity of asking for a car and driver to come immediately and take

you somewhere, or a service that lets you do this. It represents the literal meaning of
the word.

3.4. Translated work

In 2020, due to the effect of COVID-19, the global economy will be in recession.
After the epidemic, however, Vietnam is forecast to "break through" with a growth
rate of 6-7 percent, exceeding the National Assembly's target and opening a "golden
decade" in the near future. According to Dr. Tran Hong Quang, Director of the
Ministry of Planning and Investment's Institute of Development Strategy, the draft
socioeconomic development strategy for the period 2021-2030 has a number of
innovative contents that better match the requirements as well as the country's present
development demands.

According to the draft of the Government, Vietnam's economy has three strategic
aims for the period 2021-2030: institutional, human resource ,and infrastructural
breakthroughs. Vietnam is expected to achieve a GDP growth rate of about 7% per
year. In which, the actual GDP/person in this period reached 4,700 - 5,000 USD (in
2020, GDP/person is 3,521 USD). By 2030, Vietnam will become a developing
country with modern industry, high average income, real GDP per capita reach about
7,500 USD; by 2045, the country will be developed and high-income.

Thanks to its success in controlling the epidemic and making good use of foreign
trade opportunities with many countries. Vietnam has had a "connection" with many
countries around the world. Specifically, bilateral economic cooperation in the sectors
of e-commerce and digital economy between Vietnam and Singapore. The Industrial
Revolution 4.0 has penetrated all aspects of social life, from online shopping
applications such as Amazon, Lazada, Alibaba...; social networks Twitter, Instagram,
Tik Tok and Facebook to ride-hailing apps like Grab, Gojek. Countries in Asia with
extensive experience and developed digital economies, such as Singapore, South
Korea, and China, can bring a lot of useful experience to help Vietnam's economy
move towards developing a flexible and efficient digital economy, thereby enhancing
competitiveness.

 Conclusion

By researching topics: tourism, economy and Covid-19 through electronic media,

books and social networks, I have expanded a lot of new knowledge about society,
human life.... Most of all, I learned more about new lands and tourist destinations such
as: the island nation of Fiji - a peaceful, unspoiled land with coral reefs and long
beaches; an ideal destination for people love scuba diving ; and friendly people with
ancient cultures. Moreover, I also know more about the Covid-19 situation and the
serious effects on people around the world, especially on the epicenter of the world:
India. But the fact that a country of billions of people and heavily polluted like India
locked down the whole country also contributes to bringing fresh air and improved
environmental quality to the people of India. Finally, the economic vision of Vietnam
after the pandemic, opportunities and advantages in the 4.0 technology era for the
Vietnamese economy to become a high-income country. The study of the above topics
helps me broaden my knowledge about many aspects of life: about the new lands far
away, economic knowledge and the effects of Covid-19 in many direction.
Understanding that the translation course requires both basic knowledge and a deep
understanding of specific fields, I will continue to improve and learn in order to
achieve good results in the future by studying translation in the coming semesters.
