Healthy School and Community Environments

Background Information for Learners

A healthy community is described as a place that is safe and clean and has improved
overall health and quality of life for group of individuals living in the same area. There is a
sense of belongingness and people live harmoniously and peacefully together.
Community is defined as a sociological group in a large place sharing one
environment. It includes the individual and the family.
Community Health is the art of science of maintaining, protecting and improving
the health of all members of the community through organized and sustained community
efforts.
Environmental Health comprises those aspects of human health that are determined
by physical, chemical, biological, social and psychosocial factors in the surrounding
environment.

Environmental Issues That Affect our Community

➢ Population Growth is the increase in the number of individuals in a population.

➢ Poverty is the main cause of hunger in the world.
➢ Global Warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's
atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels
of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.
➢ Destruction of Ozone Layer occurs when chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halon
gases formerly found in aerosol spray cans and refrigerants are released into the
atmosphere
➢ Pollution is to make air, water, soil, etc. dangerously dirty and not suitable for
people to use. The main forms of pollution are air, water, soil, noise, thermal and
radioactive waves.
➢ Disposal of Solid and Toxic Wastes is management of toxic substances and
hazardous wastes. The treatment and disposal techniques covered are biological,
physical-chemical, incineration technologies, and secure land disposal.
➢ Landslides are a type of "mass wasting," which denotes any down-slope movement
of soil and rock under the direct influence of gravity.
➢ Typhoons is a type of large storm system having a circular or spiral system of

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 1

violent winds, typically hundreds of kilometers or miles in diameter.
➢ Flash Floods is a rapid flooding of low-lying areas: washes, rivers, dry lakes and
depressions. It may be caused by heavy rain associated with a severe thunderstorm,
hurricane, tropical storm

Some essentials characteristics of a healthy school or community

1. The school must be a safe and healthy learning environment

Healthy foods selections are available and promoted all over the school. The canteen
must be clean and sanitized. Eating good foods in a healthy environment is essential to
promote learning.

2. The school or community must have access to quality, up to date health care
resources.
Members of the school and community have access to educational programs that
provide adequate preparation in health. Medical and dental services are available to support
the school or community with adequate facilities and supplies to support the population.

3. There is a health-minded administration

There is a commitment and cooperation from the administration and staff to
implement all school policies regarding health. The school creates its own policies to support
healthy choices and a healthier environment for the welfare of every member of the
community health topics are integrated into other subject areas. Teachers understand the
issues affecting the learners and have the skills and confidence to teach about sensitive yet
important issues. The school community organizes or promote health, like intramurals, drug
awareness campaigns, fun run, and health week.

4. The community dynamically participates in the activities of preserving and

conserving healthy environment.

5. The building should be constructed using safe and environmentally friendly

materials. It should be free from asbestos and other hazardous materials. The paint used in
the school and the community must be lead-free. Special attention must be given to clean
restrooms and food service areas to comply with sanitation standards.

6. Clean drinking water must be accessible to the school.

Water needs to be checked periodically by government accredited water testing
facilities.

7. Air quality and good ventilation is also a major concern.

Classroom must have adequate cooling and ventilation for the comfort and safety of
the teachers and learners. Regular testing of air quality must be observed and administered
by accredited testing facilities.

8. Science laboratories must be properly labeled, classified and securely stored to avoid
accidents.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 2

Effects of Living in a Beautiful School and Community

Background Information for Learners

School is an institution designed for the teaching of learners (pupils) under the direction of
teachers.

Community is a group of people living in the same place or having particular characteristics
in common- practicing common ownership; particular area; common interest; social values
and responsibilities; attitudes and interests.

The Relationship Between the School and the Community

Community is a part of the society and education is the counterpart of both. School is the
social institute where consciously designed learning experiences are provided with the
objectives of achieving social aim at large, over a period of time.

Qualities of Beautiful School

A beautiful school is a child-friendly; environment-friendly; develops learners holistically,
morally and physically; possess conducive learning place; and a zone of peace.

Qualities of Beautiful Community

A beautiful community should follow as the school within it that is child-friendly,
environment-friendly, possess positive influence to children, and a place that protects the
rights of children.

The quality of both the school and the community has a vital role in the development of a
child. These two places has the strongest social impact to the learners as they grow. Whatever
not found in the school or vice versa should be found in the other in order to fill the nurturing
roles for the development of the children. Thus, the holistic development of an individual
depends on the school and the community where he grew.

My School and My Community
Annie May A. Aquino

I am Rina a Grade VI pupil living in the City. I am a transferee in our school since
mother decided to return back to the city where she works.

One day, upon going home from the school I feel worried for I knew no one and
besides I don’t understand their dialect and I see lot of drunkards along the sidewalks. I
walk almost a kilometer before I reach our house. As I enter the gate, I still see the
children sniffing the so called “rugby”. I feel unsafe but I can do nothing but to adapt to
the new home where we now belong. At night time, I hear loud voices shouting outside
until later I am used to it.
Months later, as I roam around our school, I saw some children vandalizing and
doing unnecessary things. I felt like quitting and going back to our old home away from
the city. But I can’t go back home since my father has already his new family in our old
community.
As days pass by, I just ignore those scenes and things that I see in my new school
and community even though they give me impacts of fear and unsafety.
Few days later, I gain friends and found belongingness in my new school and
community.

Different Wastes

Background Information for Learners

The different wastes can be classified into 4 different wastes namely non-biodegradable,
biodegradable, recyclable and hazardous waste.

1. Non-biodegradable substances are those wastes which do not decompose

naturally in the environment, causes pollution and are also harmful to the living
being.

• Solid rubbish
Solid rubbish includes a variety of items found in your household along with
commercial and industrial locations. solid rubbish is commonly broken down into
the following types:

• Plastic waste
This consists of bags, containers, jars, bottles and many other products that
can be found in your household. plastic is non-biodegradable, but many types of
plastic can be recycled. plastic should not be mix in with your regular waste, it should
be sorted and placed in your recycling bin.

• Paper/card waste
This includes packaging materials, newspapers, cardboards and other
products. paper can easily be recycled and reused so make sure to place them in your
recycling bin.

• Tins and metals

These can be found in various forms in your home. Most metals can be
recycled.

• Ceramics and glass

These items can easily be recycled. Look for special glass recycling bins and
bottle banks to dispose them correctly.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 15

2. Biodegradable substances are those which decompose naturally in the
environment and are considered beneficial for the environment.

• Organic waste
Organic waste is another common household. all food waste, garden waste,
manure and rotten meat are classified as organic waste. over time, organic waste is
turned into manure by microorganisms.

3. Recyclable
Recyclable rubbish includes all waste items that can be converted into
products that can be used again. solid items such as paper, metals, furniture and
organic waste can all be recycled.

4. Hazardous waste
Hazardous waste includes all types of rubbish that are flammable, toxic,
corrosive and reactive. These items can harm you as well as the environment and
must be disposed of correctly. example paints batteries insecticides chemical.

Proper Waste Disposal

Background Information for Learners

Proper waste disposal and management can be done by applying the 3Rs – Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle

REDUCE - To make something smaller or lesser in amount.

Examples: purchasing items with less packaging, minimizing food waste by planning every
meal, buying things that you only needed.
REUSE - To use materials repeatedly
RECYCLE - To use materials in order to make new products. It is also making something
from things that have been used before.
Examples: Carrying eco-friendly bags when buying product, using reusable tumblers and
food containers, using food waste as plant fertilizer (composting), recycling high grade paper
into low grade paper (newsprint), Using tires/PET bottles as plant pots.
Biodegradable- capable of being decomposed by bacteria or living organism.
Examples: animal and human wastes (manure), dry leaves/twigs, spoiled food, dead animals
etc.
Non-biodegradable – type of waste that can’t be broken down into its base compounds.
Examples: radioactive material, metal, rubber, needles, electronic parts etc.
• Every trash bin has its corresponding color and label. Green is for biodegradable,
yellow for non-biodegradable, blue for the recyclable and red for hazardous waste.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Practicing Proper Waste Management at Home, In School,
And in The Community

Background Information for Learners

People use more and more convenient products because these can be easily disposed
and replaced. Everyone in the community is capable of making an impact on the solid waste
problem through public awareness and action. This also diminishes the scavenging of waste
pickers in dumpsites and the littering of animals and pests.
Proper waste management should not be left to technical experts and the government.
Everyone should take the initiative to practice it at home, on campus, and in the town or city.
Proper waste management can be also be done through reducing or reusing, waste
storage and labeling, disposing hazardous waste, composting and recycling.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Advocates Environmental Protection Through Proper Waste Management

Background Information for Learners

Solid waste management is one thing that every city government provides for its
residents. It has been a vital environmental issue for the past few decades. The increasing
population and industrialization leading more wastes in the environment which somehow result
in waste mismanagement. More wastes will likely invite infections and diseases if we only
allow our wastes to scatter and are being unattended. The enactment of Republic Act (RA)
9003 into law, otherwise known as or the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”
will serve as our guide in response to the unending garbage problems in the Philippines.

Types of Wastes
Compostable
Compostable wastes means that a product is capable of disintegrating into
natural elements in a compost environment, leaving no toxicity in the soil. This
typically must occur in about 90 days. Waste materials that decomposed more than
90days are called Biodegradable.

Non-recyclable
These are wastes that neither be processed nor treated for reuse in some form.
Examples are foil, cardboard and soda bottles.

Recyclable
These are waste materials retrieved from the waste stream and free from
contamination that can still be converted into suitable and beneficial use or for other purposes,
including, but not limited to, newspaper, ferrous scrap metal, non-ferrous scrap metal, used oil,
corrugated cardboard, aluminum, glass, office paper, tin cans and other materials as may be
determined by the Commission.

Special Wastes
Special wastes refer to household hazardous wastes such as paints, thinners, household
batteries, lead-acid batteries, spray canisters and the like. These include wastes from residential
and commercial sources.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 33

Biodegradable
Biodegradable materials can be defined as a materials which can be decomposed by
bacteria or other natural organisms. If managed well during their decomposition, they do not
in any way contribute to pollution.

Non-Biodegradable
Non-Biodegradable materials can be defined as substances which cannot be broken
down by natural organisms. Some are a source of pollution if not managed properly and well.

FEW LITTLE THINGS A CHILD CAN DO

by: Angelica D. Cabarobias

Though I am young and small
There are things I can do lot more.
Taking care of our surroundings
Making our place clean and green.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 37

Our teachers teach us not to litter
Not to throw waste anywhere
Few little things a child can do
Making our parents proud too.

Things can be reduced, reused and recycled

Produce less trash is REDUCE
To use once more is REUSE
RECYCLE is making items into another use.

Trashes will be lessened

If plastic bags will be used again
Things that are not useful for them
Might be helpful for another man.

We do not burn garbage

We recycle instead
We don’t throw waste in the river
For it harms the water

Try to conserve energy, electricity and water

Turn off gadgets not in use, like TV and computer.
Use bike or walk if you’re going near
Instead of riding a motorcycle

There are many ways to help our environment

Especially in this time of pandemic
Helping each other is a great deed
For tomorrow, together we can make it

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 38

Answer the following questions based on the poem read.

1. What are the things a child can do to take care of his environment?
2. How can you help protect the environment?

3. Why do young people like you need to help in taking care of our environment?

4. What do you think will happen if we do not take care of our environment?
